Main road temporarily closes due to wildfire smoke
Smoke from a wildfire in a field forced the temporary closure of a main road near Okehampton in Devon. The eastbound carriageway of the A30 was closed between the A382 junction at Whiddon Down to Woodleigh Junction at Cheriton Bishop, traffic website Inrix reported. Authorities reported thick smoke from the blaze was drifting across the road, creating hazardous driving conditions. National Highways said on X both carriageways had since been reopened and thanked drivers for their patience. Around 90 fish killed after pollution in river
About 90 fish are thought to have been killed by pollution at a river in Okehampton, officials have said. The Environment Agency (EA) said it had received reports of a chemical entering the River Lew, near Okehampton, late on Monday. A spokesperson for the EA said samples had been taken from the river for analysis to help identify the source of the pollutant. They added investigations were taking place and said once fish surveys had finished the total number of fish killed could be even higher. An EA spokesperson said: "Whilst the nature of the pollutant is yet to be confirmed we have advised local landowners and residents to keep pets and livestock away from the river as a precaution. "Members of the public are urged to report pollution incidents." On Tuesday the EA said the source of the chemical had been found and stopped. Pets warning after pollution incident in Okehampton river
People are being advised to keep pets and livestock away from a Devon river after a pollution Environment Agency said a chemical had entered the watercourse, a tributary of the River Lew, near Okehampton, late on Monday. It said the source had since been found and stopped. Further investigations were continuing and officers remained on site to limit any local environmental impacts, it said.
