Who's Should Be Kenny Albert's Sidekick On MSG Broadcasts?
Now that we all know that Kenny Albert will be Sam Rosen's replacement as Rangers play-by-play telecaster, MSG Networks must find someone to move in where Joe Micheletti moved out. The natural thing to do would be elevating Albert's longtime radio sidekick, former defenseman Dave Maloney. He's candid; concise and real! Kenny Albert's Rise To Broadcasting Fame Sparked From A Love Of Hockey The game of hockey has always been a part of Kenny Albert's identity. Kenny's partner for years, Maloney would likely be Albert's personal choice but, in the end, it will be up to Network boss Andrea Greenberg to make the final decision with input from other MSG biggies. "The problem with Maloney – if you can call it 'problem' – is that Dave is too honest," says The Old Scout. "He says what he thinks and he can be harsh with the Rangers when they stink out the joint." Joe Micheletti was the perfect interlocutor when he worked alongside Sam Rosen. A former NHL player and coach, Joe M was a cool, calm, collected cat and one who'll be missed. "The Network people might want someone less forceful than Maloney," adds The Old Scout. "There are plenty of others in the MSG stable." And good men, too. Don LaGreca is one of the best as well as John Giannone; either of which would be The Maven's choice. Others include Alex Faust, Ed Cohen and Steve Valiquette. Should Maloney move up with Kenny, a replacement will be needed for the radio analyst role. That could be any of the above or someone from the outside such as former Ranger Peter Stemkowski who has been working in a pinch-hitting role for Maloney. The Old Scout: "I can't see MSG picking anyone but Maloney. It would be the natural move." Time will tell.

Helping Mike Sullivan Pick A Captain For The Rangers
Robert Edwards-Imagn Images If the Rangers are to succeed in 2025-26 rather than fall on their collective faces, some significant changes must be made. One of the most egregious sins of the Chris Drury-Peter Laviolette general staff was in the area of leadership. EXCLUSIVE: A Ringing Endorsement of Mike Sullivan From A Penguins Reporter EXCLUSIVE: A Ringing Endorsement of Mike Sullivan From A Penguins Reporter The hire of Mike Sullivan as the latest Blueshirt coach has inspired all kinds of speculation in Rangerville. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement Once captain Jacob Trouba was drop-kicked to California and never replaced. "The Rangers dearly needed new captain," says The Old Scout, "and the fact that they failed to do so is a major reason they lacked leadership – and missed the playoffs." We start this process by elimination. None of the rotten core deserve consideration because they either are too old, too slow, and just plain dead wood. Now The Maven is going to help Mike find the right guy for the "C." On paper, Adam Fox would seem to be an ideal candidate. He quarterbacks the power play, he's a local guy and he's an only-Ranger character. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement But as personalities go, Foxy has "negative charisma quotient," or the Square Root of Blah. (Sorry, Adam, but facts are facts." What the club desperate needs as a leader is one with the three V's – Vim, Vigor and Vitality. Now that the team aims to be younger and tougher, it tells me that Sully had better get off his tuchus, get it over with and name Young, Fighting Will Cuylle, the man of the house. He hits, he scores and he'd be the perfect pick in the new scheme of things. If there are any objections I want to hear them here and now!

Why The Rangers Are Primed To Make The Playoffs
Now that the Trade Deadline dust has cleared, I can assure you That the Rangers will make the playoffs. Figure it out; and you don't need analytics either. * The Red Wings are in a tailspin. And won't recover. * Playing 'way over their heads all season, the Blue Jackets will fadel * The Canadiens have come on strong but lack experience and goaltending. * The Devils have lost Jack Hughes for the season and are in free fall. Ah, now tell me who The Maven left out. (Hint: the Blueshirts are there right now.) Of course, Ottawa's Senators are in the way because coach Travis Green – Transparency Note: my buddy – has the goods. Heading into today's four-pointer, the Sens and Rangers are tied at 67 points apiece but Ottawa has a game in hand. "On paper," says The Old Scout, "the Rangers are a better team but with a big IF. New York's best players have to be at the top of their game – starting with Shesterkin and finishing with Panarin." Otherwise, adds The Maven, the Rangers will be gonzo on the "Obandanzo." No less important is the manner in which Mrs. Laviolette's Favorite Coach arranges his lineup especially with the most recent acquisitions. "Lavvy also found a good one in Zac Jones on defense," adds The Old Scout, "but I'm not sure if Pete realizes it. The coach also has to figure out a power play that works; like in the good, old days." Dividing the goaltending should not be an issue. Igor Shesterkin figures to start today with Jonathan Quick tomorrow, when the Rangers host Columbus. The Old Scout: "Quicky is on top of his game; now Shesty has to help the rush to The Finish Line. The Blueshirts have suffered enough with Igor's erratic play this season." Not that beating Ottawa will be as easy as skating on the frozen Rideau Canal; far from it. Coachj Green has a crew that has refused to fold out of the playoff running with Tim Stutzle my fave Senator. The trick for Laviolette is to get his floaters back IN the games and that starts with Friend Zibanejad and his equally floating buddy Big Al Lafreniere. Time now for you, dear reader, to clip Mave's prediction on your fridge: RANGERS WILL MAKE THE PLAYOFFS! Deny that if you can! Or dare!!

Blueshirts Are Feeling The "Messier Effect" With J.T. Miller
They all laughed at Christopher Columbus when he said the world was round. They all laughed when Edison discovered sound. They all laughed at The Maven when I said – when New York got him – that J.T. Miller would become the Rangers new Mark Messier. Well, who's got the last laugh now? The Maven! Sean Avery, too. (See below for Sean) Or, did you not see Mister Miller putting you in the mood last night during the 4-0 blanking of the Islanders at The Garden? J.T. – as in Just Terrific – extended his point streak to six games – or five goals and five assists for ten points – which also can be translated into four wins in five games. "The Rangers have taken care of the teams they had to beat," says The Old Scout. "The next big test is tomorrow at home against Washington. With the head of steam they've built, they're in shape to knock off the elites." Since it takes one to know one, it's worth digesting former Ranger Sean Avery's thoughts on J.T. Obviously S.A. and The Maven are on the same page. "J.T. is proving why people should not listen to certain armchair general managers," tweeted Avery. "Miller is exactly the number one center the Rangers needed; not an Elias Petterson." Then a pause: "It's all about what a team needs, not what will look good on paper." GM Chris Drury has until Friday's Trade Deadline to determine what else – if anything – his Blueshirts require to nail down the coveted playoff berth. Obviously with two straight shutouts, the Jonathan Quick-Igor Shesterkin combo is running on all cylinders, also carbs – with batteries also included. But at a time like this, we must be realistic. J.T. Miller cannot do it alone; nor the goalies nor the energized kids. And if Sleepy Time Guy Alexis Lafreniere still is with the team by the Trade Deadline, him too! Ergo: If these Blueshirts all pull on the same rope, they'll cross The Finish Line and into Playoff Land!
