Nova Scotia Health approaching goal of reduced surgical waitlist
The interim head of the provincial health authority says enough progress has been made to reduce the surgical backlog in Nova Scotia that she's not looking over her shoulder. In December of 2022, Karen Oldfield vowed before the legislature's health committee — first asking for a Bible to swear upon before crossing her heart in the absence of the Good Book — that the backlog would be reduced by 10,000 people by mid-2025. At the time, the list stood at about 22,000 people. Such a decrease would bring the province in line with national benchmarks for surgical waitlists. "I'm not going to hell," Oldfield joked with reporters Friday following an appearance on a panel at a Halifax Chamber of Commerce luncheon to discuss innovation in health care. "We are 1,500 surgeries away from what we would consider to be an appropriate [waitlist]. With any luck, we will hit that this year." Statistics released by Nova Scotia Health show the province's waitlist as of April 1 of this year was 15,769 people. That's down from 17,369 people the same time the year before, and 19,917 people as of April 1, 2023. The procedures with the largest number of people waiting are cataract extraction (3,564), knee replacement (1,274) and hip replacement (783). Oldfield said the progress comes down to the health authority's ability to make a plan and stick to it. "There's no magic," she said. "It's focus and discipline to do it." Although the health authority announced in 2023 a premium for doctors willing to work outside traditional hours in order to cut into the backlog, Oldfield said the biggest factor in making progress has been getting staffing levels back to where they needed to be coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic. "We did lose a lot of staff. Not just because of COVID, but people — they burn out, they age out, they retire. So we've been through a period of resurgence." Oldfield said she would like to see more surgeries happening during off-hours, but there needs to be a certain level of staffing to be able to make that work and take full advantage of available operating room time and equipment. "When we have assets, you want to use your assets," she said. "And when they sit idle, that's not a good thing. So we still have lots of time across the province that these could be used." Prosecutor: Man, 49, charged in high-speed Tennessee Highway 109 crash that killed couple
A 49-year-old man has been charged in connection with a September crash on Wilson County's State Route 109 that authorities say killed a married couple. Daryl W. Oldfield faces two counts of vehicular homicide by recklessness and one count of reckless endangerment with a weapon, according to Wilson County court records. The 15th Judicial District Attorney's Office confirmed the charges. Fredrick Miller, 78, and Edna Miller, 76, were killed in the crash on Sept. 6, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol's preliminary report. Oldfield has been booked and released from jail on a $40,000 bond, according to the Wilson County Sheriff's Office. Efforts to reach Oldfield and his lawyer for the case were not immediately successful. Oldfield is scheduled to be arraigned April 14 on the charges. He is accused of driving a 2018 Nissan Titan north on Highway 109 around the 5700 block of Highway 109, north of the Spence Creek neighborhood, just before the crash, according to the initial Tennessee Highway Patrol report. Police were called to the scene at 12:19 p.m. A preliminary investigation found that a 2024 Lexus RX3 was stopped in the center turn lane, preparing to turn left onto Northern Road, while a Ford Ranger was heading south. The Titan was passing traffic in the turn lane at a "high rate of speed" and crashed into the back of the Lexus, the highway patrol report says. It also notes that the Titan veered into the southbound lanes after impact with the Lexus and hit the Ford Ranger head on. The Millers were in the Ranger. The crash caused backups in both directions for much of the afternoon and intensified safety concerns on 109. Speed limit reductions were put in place for 109 in Wilson County earlier this year. Schroders outlines nearly $200 million in cost cuts in revamp
Summary Companies Operating profit beats analyst forecasts Schroders aims to attract 20 bln pounds to private assets arm Shares up 5% in early trading LONDON, March 6 (Reuters) - Schroders (SDR.L), opens new tab outlined plans to cut 150 million pounds ($194 million) from its costs over the next three years in a strategy update on Thursday aimed at rebooting flagging performance at the 221-year-old British money manager. The FTSE 100 company also said clients pulled a net 4.7 billion pounds from its funds in 2024 - underlining the pressure on the business - compared with 1 billion pounds of inflows the prior year. Analysts at JPMorgan said in a note that the cost cuts - equivalent to 8% of Schroders' operating costs of 1.8 billion pounds - would be welcomed by investors, adding that its operating profit of 640.5 million pounds for the year beat forecasts. Schroders' shares gained 5% in early trading. Chief Executive Richard Oldfield stepped up to the role in November and is aiming to revive Schroders' fortunes after a poor run of earnings last year dragged its shares down 25%, a third straight annual decline. Like rival mid-sized fund houses, Schroders has struggled to fend off competition from huge U.S. rivals such as BlackRock and Vanguard offering cheaper passive products like index-trackers. Reuters reported last week that representatives of the company's founding Schroder family, which still own a 44% stake and has two family members on the board, had challenged executives to improve its fortunes faster. The company said the targeted savings would come from simplifying processes and technology improvements. Finance chief Meagen Burnett told reporters the company, which employs 6,400 people, would have fewer staff after the cuts, but did not give any further detail. Schroders said it would incur restructuring costs of around 200 million pounds, which often stem from layoffs. RAMPING UP NEW BUSINESS Former finance chief Oldfield also outlined targets to ramp up new business from its higher-margin wealth and private markets units, including attracting 20 billion pounds into its private assets arm Schroders Capital in three years. "Schroders is an exceptional company. We have all we need to ensure this business thrives," he said. Oldfield had already moved quickly to cut costs, shedding around 200 staff and more than halving the size of its executive committee. Schroders' shares had gained 17% so far this year ahead of the strategy update. The company's overall assets under management increased 4% to 778.7 billion pounds and it announced an unchanged dividend for the year of 21.5 pence per share including a 15 pence final dividend. Oldfield said he had spoken to managers at French money manager Tikehau since they had built up a 5% stake in the company last month, adding they had expressed that they saw value in the business. Tikehau leapt into its top five backers and has said it sees potential for "commercial collaboration" with the British company. Oldfield said he was open to collaboration if it was in the best interests of clients.
