New head of Russian land forces distinguished himself in Ukraine

May 16 (Reuters) - A colonel general dubbed "General Breakthrough" for distinguishing himself in key battles in Moscow's more than three-year-old war in Ukraine has been appointed head of Russia's land forces, the daily Rossiiskaya Gazeta said on Friday. The government daily said Andrei Mordvichev was born in 1976 in what was then Soviet Kazakhstan and last year was decorated as a Hero of Russia, the country's highest award. Mordvichev, previously head of the Central Military District, commanded operations that led to the 2022 surrender of Ukrainian units holding out in the Azovstal steelworks after a siege of about 80 days in the southern port of Mariupol. In 2024, he led Russian troops capturing the mining centre of Avdiivka in Donetsk region on the war's eastern front, a key operation in a town where Ukrainian authorities had for years built up fortifications. Rossiiskaya Gazeta said he also led Russian forces in retaking three key towns in their slow advance westward through Donetsk region - Selydove, Kurakhove and Ukrainsk. Earlier in his career, he had also taken part in conflicts in Syria. Mordvichev takes over from army general Oleg Salyukov, replaced as head of ground forces on Thursday by a decree signed by President Vladimir Putin. Salyukov, 69, was appointed deputy secretary of the Security Council, the Kremlin's top consultative body, chaired by Putin, and which is responsible for managing and integrating national security policy.

Russia's Putin sacks chief of military's land forces

PHOTO: AFP MOSCOW - President Vladimir Putin on May 15 sacked Russia's chief of land forces, General Oleg Salyukov, the Kremlin said, in the latest removal of a high-profile military establishment figure over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Gen Salyukov, 70, will become a deputy to former defence minister Sergei Shoigu, who was removed in 2024 and made Secretary of the Security Council. The move was announced in a Kremlin decree. Less than a week ago, Gen Salyukov was running the grand Victory Day military parade in Red Square with current Defence Minister Andrey Belousov, marking the 80th anniversary of victory over Nazi Germany. Russian law enforcement has charged more than a dozen military and defence sector officials since 2024, many of whom were accused of siphoning money from major projects for personal gain. Mr Shoigu, a longtime Putin ally, was downgraded in 2024 after holding various top positions since the early 1990s. The Kremlin has denied that the arrests and sackings in Russia's top brass were a purge of the military establishment following setbacks in Ukraine. Gen Salyukov had been in charge of Russia's land forces since 2014, overseeing involvement in the Syrian civil war and the offensive on Ukraine. He was a deputy head of the general staff for four years before that. Russia, which allegedly planned to take Ukraine, a country with a much smaller military, in three days, has been stuck in a bloody and grinding three-year conflict that has left tens of thousands dead. Ukraine and Russia are due to hold their first direct peace talks in more than three years in Istanbul on May 15 and 16. Putin replaces commander of Russia's ground forces and appoints him to security council

MOSCOW, May 15 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin has replaced the commander of Russia's ground forces, Army General Oleg Salyukov, 69, appointing him deputy secretary of the Security Council, according to a decree published on the Kremlin's website on Thursday. The Security Council is the Kremlin's top consultative body, chaired by Putin, and which is responsible for managing and integrating national security policy. It does not have direct authority over Russia's security agencies and ministries. The secretary of the Security Council is former defence minister Sergei Shoigu. Salyukov has for the past 11 years led the large Victory Day parades in Moscow's Red Square that mark the anniversary of Germany's surrender at the end of World War Two. From January 2023, Salyukov was deputy to Valery Gerasimov, Russia's Chief of the General Staff, who was appointed by Putin as a commander in charge to lead Russia's war in Ukraine. Salyukov has been sanctioned by the United Kingdom, the European Union, Canada and several other countries.
