Russian drones kill two in Ukraine's southern Kherson region: Governor
Russian drones killed two people on Monday in Ukraine's southern Kherson region, regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin said. Prokudin, writing on the Telegram messaging app, said a woman was killed in the region's main town, also known as Kherson, and a man died in an area north of the city along the Dnipro River. Russian forces remain in control of large swathes of Kherson region despite a Ukrainian counter-offensive in late 2022 that recaptured the city of Kherson and other areas.

Russia Kills Toddler in Drone Strike, Ukraine Says
A one-year-old boy was killed in a Russian drone strike, according to Ukrainian authorities as Moscow continues to step up its strikes on civilian targets. The boy died following an explosion in the Kherson Region, the head of the regional military administration said on Wednesday. Ukrainian authorities said Thursday at least 12 people had been killed and dozens injured in Russian attacks across the country over the previous day. Following Moscow's latest barrage against Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, Oleksandra Matviichuk, a Ukrainian human rights lawyer, called for more missiles and air defenses for Ukraine and tougher sanctions against Russia. Newsweek has contacted the Russian defense ministry for comment. As of July 2025, at least 638 Ukrainian children have been killed in Russia's full-scale invasion, according to the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine. The latest reported incident comes amid a spike in Russia's bombardment on Ukrainian infrastructure and as Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky called on allies to help beef up his country's air defense. Russian forces carried out drone strikes, artillery shelling and airstrikes on Wednesday in which they targeted residential areas, critical infrastructure and social facilities in Kherson city and over 40 other settlements across the region. The head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, said on Telegram on Wednesday the child died from injuries following an explosion in the courtyard of a residential building in the village of Pravdyne. Ukrainian outlet Euromaidan reported that 5-year-old Dmytro Bezverkhyi had been killed in Russian rocket strike on Velykyi Bobryk, in the Sumy region. "Mother survived after shielding him with her body," it reported. Nearly half of child casualties are from explosive weapons in populated areas, including loitering munitions and drone attacks, according to the United Nations. Ukrainian authorities said Thursday that at least 12 people had been killed and 60 injured over the past day, after Moscow's forces launched another mass aerial attack in regions including Kyiv, Kherson and Kharkiv. The attacks included 18 missiles and about 400 drones, including almost 200 Shahed-type kamikaze models, according toZelensky Matviichuk, head of Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties, said on Thursday in a statement shared with Newsweek that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot win the war on the battlefield so he is seeking to kill civilians and destroy civilian infrastructure across the country. She said if the policy of the international community doesn't change, it will only lead to more deaths and said that Ukraine needed more missiles, air defenses and tougher sanctions against Russia. Head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, Oleksandr Prokudin onTelegram: "Russian terrorists have cut short another child's life in the Kherson child died on the spot from the injuries he received. My sincere condolences to the family and friends of the innocent baby who was killed." Oleksandra Matviichuk, head of Ukraine's Center for Civil Liberties, said in a statement: "There is a good Russian proverb: 'the appetite grows while eating'. If the policy of the international community doesn't change, it will only lead to more deaths. "How can you help? We need more missiles and air defenses, tough sanctions against Russia. We must demonstrate strength. The phone calls don't work." On Thursday, Zelensky urged Kyiv's partners to do more to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities as he condemned Russia's recent attacks as "pure terrorism." Meanwhile, Kyiv will hope that U.S. President Donald Trump's criticism of Putin and pledge for more military support for Ukraine could shift the dial in the war. Ukrainian toddler murdered in evil targeted attack by Russian suicide drone in Kherson
Russian soldiers murdered a one-year-old boy in a horrific and apparently deliberate drone attack on Thursday against a Ukrainian city that has become known as a 'human safari zone,' officials said. Haunting images of the boy's play room at his great-grandmother's house in Pravdyne show glass and debris flung all over his toys following the deadly explosion. 'These children's toys, scattered by the blast wave, belonged to Dmytryk,' Ukrainian senior military official Oleksandr Prokudin told The Telegraph. 'He was only one year-and-two-months old. Today, he was killed by Russia – mercilessly and deliberately,' he added. A photo shared by Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration, shows the aftermath of a Russian drone strike that killed a toddler on July 9, 2025. X/Oleksandr Prokudin The boy was only 1 year old. X/Oleksandr Prokudin Both Russia and Ukraine use 'first person view' (FPV) drones, in which soldiers remotely fly the bomb-laden aircraft while viewing the footage live. The drones then crash into their targets and explode. Russia has used such drones to terrorize the local population of Kherson — hunting civilians who are out in the open and detonating their deadly payload.

One-year-old boy killed in ‘human safari' drone attack
A one-year-old boy was killed 'mercilessly and deliberately' in a Russian drone attack in southern Ukraine, local authorities said. The toddler was staying with his great-grandmother in the village of Pravdyne, in Kherson, according to Oleksandr Prokudin, a senior military official. Mr Prokudin said: 'These children's toys, scattered by the blast wave, belonged to Dmytryk. He was only one year and two months old. Today, he was killed by Russia – mercilessly and deliberately.' The attack was part of a wider assault on Kherson, where residents feel hunted and refer to repeated drone attacks against civilians as a 'human safari'. Attacks on Kherson this week focused on residential areas, critical infrastructure and social facilities, killing one person and injuring at least 17 more, authorities said. According to the United Nations, nearly half of the verified child deaths in Ukraine – 638 – come from explosive weapons used in populated areas. A recent UN report found that Russia is guilty of committing crimes against humanity in Kherson following a 10-month investigation into drone strikes in the region. Members of a UN Commission found that Russia was engaged in the deliberate targeting of civilians and concluded that the drone attacks were 'widespread, systematic and conducted as part of a coordinated state policy'. Attacks are so common that local authorities have strongly advised that civilians stay at home unless they are able to carry a tourniquet – a medical kit that is used to stop life-threatening bleeding. Drones regularly target supermarkets, cars and buses, according to those who live there. Anastasia, a 23-year-old aid worker, previously told The Telegraph that many residents feel unable to leave their homes. She said: 'More and more residents of the city cannot leave the house, even for food, because there is a great possibility that they will not return home.' Moscow has stepped up its attacks against civilians in recent months, regularly targeting major cities such as Kyiv and Dnipro. Russian forces fired a total of 741 missiles and drones on Tuesday night, breaking a record that had been set just the Friday before. On Wednesday night, Russia fired 400 drones and 18 missiles in an attack that lasted nearly 10 hours and killed two people in Kyiv, Volodymyr Zelensky said. The Ukrainian president said the attack showed the need to impose further sanctions against Russia. He said: 'This demands that we speed things up. Sanctions must be imposed faster, and pressure on Russia must be strong enough that they truly feel the consequences of their terror.' Mr Zelensky will be in Rome on Thursday to speak with Ukraine's allies about additional financing for drone interceptors and air defence systems. Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, is preparing to meet Marco Rubio, his US counterpart, in Malaysia. Their meeting follows Donald Trump's recent rant about Vladimir Putin, who was accused by the US president of throwing around 'a lot of bulls--t'. Meanwhile, a recent US pause on military aid, which included crucial Patriot missile interceptors, has officially resumed, according to anonymous officials who spoke to AFP. The paused shipment included 30 Patriot missiles, 8,500 155mm artillery shells, 250 GMLRS rockets and 142 Hellfire air-to-surface missiles. Mr Trump claimed that he did not approve the pause, with CNN reporting that Pete Hegseth, the defence secretary, had not informed the White House of his decision.

5 killed, 39 injured as Russia launches 700 drones, missiles in Ukraine
July 9 (UPI) -- At least five people were killed and 39 injured in Ukraine after Russia launched its largest aerial assault of the war, firing 741 drones and missiles against targets all across the country, including Kyiv and provinces in the far west. The Ukraine Air Force said in a post on its official social media account that air defenses shot down or jammed most of the 728 drones and 13 cruise and ballistic missiles, however some reached their marks. The city of Lutsk took the brunt of the attack in the west but the largest loss of life was in the east in the frontline province of Donetsk where three civilians were killed and 11 injured, Gov. Vadym Filashkin said Wednesday in an update on social media. In part-Russian-occupied Kherson one person was killed and 17 injured in strikes on settlements across the parts of the province still under Ukrainian control, including Kherson city, according to Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin. Kharkiv Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said in a post on his Telegram account that at least one person had been killed and four injured in strikes on Kharkiv city and surrounding settlements, while Zaporizhzhia Gov. Ivan Federal reported hundreds of incidents with at least five civilians injured. Kyiv, where more than 40 people have been killed since Russian forces turned the focus of its air campaign on the capital in mid-June, came under heavy attack overnight with explosions heard starting at about midnight. One person was injured in a drone strike in an eastern outer suburb. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said damage had also been reported in the Dnipro, Zhytomyr, Kirovohrad, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Khmelnytskyi, Cherkasy and Chernihiv regions but hailed the effectiveness of air defenses, including new home-grown defensive systems. "Our interceptor drones were used -- dozens of enemy targets were downed, and we are scaling up this technology. Mobile fire groups were also active -- they downed dozens as well. I thank all our warriors for their precision. At the moment, efforts are ongoing across many regions of Ukraine to eliminate the consequences of last night's Russian attack," he said in post on X. Calling the attacks "telling" given extensive recent efforts to negotiate a cease-fire by Ukraine's western partners, Zelensky called for more sanctions on Moscow, particularly targeting the oil exports he said funded its "war machine." "This is yet another proof of the need for sanctions -- biting sanctions against oil, which has been fueling Moscow's war machine with money for over three years of the war. Secondary sanctions on those who buy this oil and thereby sponsor killings. Everyone who wants peace must act," he said. The airborne assault on Ukraine overnight came as U.S. President Donald Trump reversed a temporary pause on shipments of some weapons to Ukraine, including missiles for Ukraine's Patriot air defense batteries, key to protecting Ukraine from Russian missile and drone strikes. Trump has expressed growing impatience after Russia stepped up its attacks on Ukraine following a two-hour phone he held with President Vladimir Putin on Thursday, his sixth with the Russian leader, complaining that no progress had been made. "We want to put defensive weapons [in Ukraine] because Putin is not ... treating human beings right. He's killing too many people, so we're sending some defensive weapons to Ukraine," Trump said Tuesday at a meeting of his cabinet. "We get a lot of bulls--- thrown at us by Putin, if you want to know the truth. He's very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless," added Trump. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation.
