Fiona Shaw back in Irish cinemas in July in Hot Milk
BAFTA and Olivier Award winner Fiona Shaw will be back in Irish cinemas in July as mother-daughter tensions take centre stage in the drama Hot Milk, an adaptation of Deborah Levy's Booker Prize-nominated novel of the same name. Hot Milk marks the feature directorial debut of playwright and screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Her Naked Skin, Secret Diary of a Call Girl, She Said), who has also written the screenplay. It sees Bad Sisters and Killing Eve star Shaw joined by Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Emily), Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Corsage), and Vincent Perez (Alone in Berlin, Boléro). The synopsis for Hot Milk reads: "Set in the scorching heat of a Spanish summer, Sofia (Emma Mackey) and her ailing mother, Rose (Fiona Shaw), travel to the seaside town of Almería to seek the help of Dr Gómez (Vincent Perez), an enigmatic healer who may hold the key to Rose's mysterious illness. "As long-buried tensions simmer between them, Sofia finds herself drawn to the magnetic and free-spirited Ingrid (Vicky Krieps). "But as the sun beats down, Sofia's growing independence and search for freedom become too much for her controlling mother, forcing her to question the true nature of Rose's illness. "Secrets, lies, and revelations emerge, leading Sofia to doors that might be best left unopened." It opens in cinemas on Friday 4 July.

Swindon-born actress 'odds-on favourite' to be the next Doctor Who
Speculation is mounting that a Swindon-born celebrity is set to be announced as the next star of Doctor Who. Rumours are continuing to swirl as to who could replace Ncuti Gatwa as the face of the iconic BBC TV series, following reports that he will step away from the show. Swindon's very own Billie Piper is now the odds-on favourite to be the next Doctor, with online betting guide listing her as the strong 1/3 favourite with a 75% chance of landing the role. Jenna Coleman, another of the show's former sidekicks, is currently second favourite with odds of 2/1. Doctor Foster's Suranne Jones, Jessica Gunning of Baby Reindeer fame, and Derry Girls and Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan also make the lists as outside bets. Billie is already a fan's favourite among Doctor Who enthusiasts after playing the Doctor's companion Rose Tyler alongside Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant's versions of the character in 2005 and 2006. She also returned for several guest star appearances in 2008 and featured in the show's 50th anniversary special in 2013. "Expect markets to move fast once casting chatter heats up officially." The speculation comes as Sunday's edition of The Observer described Billie as being "in pole position" to take over as the next Doctor should Ncuti Gatwa depart, although the newspaper does not cite a particular source for the claim. The BBC has denied that he has been "axed" but had not yet confirmed whether he will be staying in the Tardis for a third series in the role. If the rumours are true, Billie would be the first person ever to appear in the show as both a companion and as the Doctor. Billie was born in Swindon in 1982 and attended Brandon Forest School in Purton before moving to London at the age of 12 to pursue a career on stage and screen. She won two National Television Awards for Best Actress in 2005 and 2006 for her performances in Doctor Who, and won an Olivier Award for her performance as the lead actress in the 2016 production of Yerma. Piper also enjoyed a successful singing career, becoming the youngest female singer to enter the UK singles charts at number one with her debut single "Because We Want To", aged just 15.

Pembrokeshire MP praises Neyland therapy centre
171,673 emergency parcels distributed across Wales last year A GROWING number of Welsh families are relying on food banks, with new figures showing that nearly 172,000 emergency food parcels were distributed across Wales between April 2024 and March 2025. The data, released today (Friday, May 23) by anti-poverty charity The Trussell Trust, shows the scale of food poverty in the UK – with 2.9 million parcels handed out nationally. Over one million of those were for children. In Wales, food parcel distribution has increased by 26% since 2019/20, a sign that for many communities, hunger is becoming normalised. The figures have sparked renewed calls for government action, with well-known faces including Dame Julie Walters and Lesley Manville urging ministers to address what they describe as a national emergency. Dame Julie said: 'Emergency food distribution is being normalised in the UK. These stats highlight the need for us to come together and play our part in saying this isn't right.' In Pembrokeshire and across rural Wales, campaigners warn that the situation is worsened by isolation, limited services, and higher energy bills – all pushing vulnerable people to crisis point. Actor Lesley Manville, who recently won an Olivier Award, said: 'I'm shocked at the extremely high levels of emergency food parcels being distributed by food banks, especially the sharp rise in children under five needing support. This has to be a wake-up call for the UK government.' In Wales, more than 187,000 parcels were distributed the previous year – a drop in 2024/25, but still far above pre-pandemic levels. Trussell Trust chief executive Emma Revie said this cannot be seen as a success: 'Thousands of families, disabled people, and working households had to access food banks. This should be a massive wake-up call.' Comedian Rosie Jones said that proposed UK Government cuts to disability benefits could make matters worse: 'Slashing the income of someone already struggling to cover life's essentials is cruel and counterproductive.' In Pembrokeshire, food banks such as PATCH in Milford Haven and the Trussell-linked outlets in Haverfordwest and Fishguard have seen sustained high demand. Volunteers warn that without local donations and support, they would struggle to meet needs. TV presenter and Trussell ambassador AJ Odudu added: 'Right now, someone needs an emergency food parcel every 11 seconds. It's never been more vital that we all play our part.' The charity is calling for an urgent re-think on proposed welfare cuts and for the UK Government to take decisive action to reduce hunger and hardship. Campaigners are also urging the public to donate food or money to their local food bank. A postcode search tool showing how many parcels were distributed in each area is available at:
