Miami Dolphins Stock Up/Stock Down after tie with Chicago Bears
CHICAGO — The Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears tied at 24 in the preseason opener at Soldier Field. Tua Tagovailoa and most of Miami's starters played a series, which was a complete reversal from how coach Mike McDaniel approached the 2024 preseason opener. Miami Dolphins Stock Up vs. Bears RB Ollie Gordon Gordon, a rookie, had a 21-yard rush, he scored his first NFL preseason touchdown and he converted on a fourth down in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Jaylen Wright and Alexander Mattison totaled 12 carries for 24 yards. Edge Grayson Murphy and LB Willie Gay Murphy and Gay have had really nice training camps and they picked up where they left off in the preseason opener. Murphy had a sack and Gay had a half sack. Derrick McLendon also had a sack for the Dolphins. Pass rush will not be Miami's problem. CB Storm Duck and CB Jack Jones The Dolphins say they have confidence in their cornerbacks and Duck and Jones looked pretty good in the opener. Duck is a sound tackler and positions himself well on the field. Jones is a dynamic athlete who appeared poised to make big plays. Ethan Bonner has come on over the last seven days, too. K Jason Sanders Jason drilled a 56-yarder. He keeps getting better and better from distance. Miami Dolphins Stock Down vs. Bears QB's Quinn Ewers and Zach Wilson It can be difficult to evaluate backup quarterbacks in preseason. They're typically not playing with starters. They may be put into difficult spots, especially with backup offensive linemen. But the preseason numbers for Ewers and Wilson were not pretty. Ewers: 5-for-18, 2 sacks, 2 fumbles. And Wilson: 5-for-9, 4 sacks. G Jonah Savaiinaea No reason to panic. It's one preseason game. And one joint practice. But at times, Jonah looks like, well, a rookie. There's big upside here, but also probably some growing pains that are going to come. Savaiinaea will continue to work on his anchor, footwork and hand placement. He should ascend as the season progresses. It's just not all there yet. Fighting words? Miami Dolphins' Mike McDaniel: Enforcing the rules is 'very easy' for me
MIAMI GARDENS -- Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel met with reporters before Day 8 of training camp. Highlights: McDaniel jokes about electric first down technology: "I think it's good. Unfortunately, are we going to have less humans running into people with metal sticks?" Enforcing the rules: McDaniel was asked about if he needed to be tougher this year. More: Miami Dolphins preseason schedule 2025: TV schedule, how to watch "For me it's easy to evolve into what's best for the players," he said. "Is it hard for me to post in front of a team meeting, people who have gotten fined for not upholding what our standards are? No, it's not. It's very easy." Zach Sieler seeking new contract Team MVP Zach Sieler wants a new contract but isn't holding out. McDaniel said his teammates "very much" recognize how Sieler is approaching this. "He's showing teammates how he wants to play football," McDaniel said. Sheffield back: CB Kendall Sheffield will be at practice today. Gordon makes impression: Rookie RB Ollie Gordon II left his mark on the team's first padded practice, McDaniel said. "Ollie kind of took the opportunity to introduce himself to the team." Bayron Matos 'getting better' Offensive lineman Bayron Matos was airlifted off the practice field last week, but he has since been released from the hospital. McDaniel said Matos "is getting better. He's with his family and with the appropriate care. That was the only concern we had." LT Patrick Paul impresses: McDaniel said second-year OT Patrick Paul is "acting like he knows the NFL regular season is coming and wants to surprise people." The right approach: The other day, Tua Tagovailoa said he's focused on the bigger picture rather than whether he threw an interception in practice on a given day. McDaniel said it's a "gigantic" step because handling "noise" is what defines a franchise QB's job. Help on the way? McDaniel was asked whether the team plans to bring in a veteran cornerback for a visit. He responded with his standard answer that they're always looking to improve the team. NICE JOB, ROOKIE: Tua Tagovailoa praises Dolphins rookie Quinn Ewers: 'Balling.' 2025 NFL Scouting Combine: Kansas City Chiefs held 'formal meeting' with Oklahoma State RB
2025 NFL Scouting Combine: Kansas City Chiefs held 'formal meeting' with Oklahoma State RB 4.61 and 4.62 for Oklahoma State RB Ollie Gordon !!! — The Draft Network (@TheDraftNetwork) March 1, 2025 According to Ryan Fowler of the Draft Network, the Kansas City Chiefs had a "formal meeting" with Oklahoma State Cowboys running back Ollie Gordon II at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Chiefs could look for another diamond in the rough at running back, as there is a deep pool of options going into next month's draft. The injuries suffered by Isiah Pacheco affected his performance last season, and rookie Carson Steele struggled with turnovers at the start of the year. The signing of Kareem Hunt was crucial to the team's success and could be an inspiration to select Gordon II if available. "I think that this is a deep running back class, and I think that that's the one position offensively," said Veach during his press conference at the NFL Combine last week. "I think you need more than one. It's a long season, and you have to have a good tandem there. You saw the Niners the last few years when they were operating at their peak. I mean, they had the guys like (Jordan Mason) with (Christian) McCaffrey, McCaffrey with Elijah Mitchell. They've had a ton in there for a while. So I think having multiple running backs is a trend too, that could elevate where guys go." Gordon II showed his value in his second season at Oklahoma State, as his 2024 season was a step back. He had a tremendous 2023 season, rushing for 1,732 yards and 21 touchdowns. He was named the 2023 Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and won the Doak Walker Award.

Broncos met with mid-round RB prospect Ollie Gordon at NFL combine
Broncos met with mid-round RB prospect Ollie Gordon at NFL combine The Denver Broncos are taking a close look at running backs in the 2025 NFL draft. The Broncos were among at least six teams that set up formal interviews with Oklahoma State running back Ollie Gordon at the NFL combine, according to The Draft Network's Ryan Fowler. Gordon (6-1, 233 pounds) earned honorable mention All-Big 12 recognition last fall after rushing for 880 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns. One year earlier, he won the Doak Walker Award -- given to college football's best running back -- after totaling 2,062 yards from scrimmage and rushing for 21 touchdowns in 2023. NFL mock drafts now have Gordon projected as a fourth-round pick. Denver holds seven draft picks this year, including their own selection in the fourth round. The Broncos "formally met with about 10 running backs as this year's draft is considered to be unusually deep at that position," according to KUSA-TV's Mike Klis. Denver coach Sean Payton has specifically mentioned running back among the team's top needs, so it seems safe to assume the Broncos will address the position during April's draft.
