Darren Yapi's first career brace lifts Rapids over Minnesota

(Photo credit: Matt Krohn-Imagn Images) Darren Yapi scored his first career brace to lift the visiting Colorado Rapids to a 2-1 victory at the Minnesota United on Sunday in Saint Paul, Minn. Yapi's fifth and sixth goals of the season came 10 minutes apart in the second half for Colorado (9-11-6, 33 points), which snapped a nine-match road league winless streak. It was perfect timing for a good game from the 20-year-old, coming in the first league match after Colorado dealt joint team scoring leader Djordje Mihailovic to Toronto for a fee worth up to $9 million. Zack Steffen made nine saves for the Rapids, who moved up two places to eighth in the Western Conference standings in the scrap for nine conference playoff places. Tani Oluwaseyi cut Minnesota's late deficit in half with his 10th league goal after also scoring three times in Leagues Cup play. But the third-place Loons (12-6-8, 44 points) have now lost back-to-back games in all competitions. Minnesota outshot Colorado 9-4 during the first half but rarely seriously worked Steffen. Colorado grew into the game after the break and had already created a couple quality opportunities before Yapi broke through for his brace. In the 60th minute, Yapi ran onto Sam Vines' long outlet ball down the left, then cut in on his right foot and guided a low finish beyond Dayne St. Clair into the bottom left corner. In the 70th, he was a late-arriving runner as the Rapids pushed numbers forward on the counter, receiving Rafael Navarro's cross-field pass and this time finishing with more power past St. Clair from the right side of the box. Oluwaseyi pulled Minnesota's goal back in the 73rd minute after the Loons attacked down the left, finishing off Joseph Rosales' cross from near the penalty spot. Minnesota continued to apply pressure from there but lacked composure. Oluwaseyi wasted another effort after getting behind Colorado's back line, failing to hit the target. On another promising foray down the right, Rosales tried to cut the ball onto his stronger left foot, which allowed his shot attempt to be blocked.

Buchanan's brace lifts Canada to 6-0 Gold Cup win over Honduras

VANCOUVER - Tajon Buchanan notched a brace and Canada opened its Gold Cup run with a decisive 6-0 victory over Honduras at B.C. Place on Tuesday. Local product Niko Sigur got the 30th-ranked Canadians on the board in the 27th minute with his first goal for the senior national team and Tani Oluwaseyi followed with a tally in first-half injury time. Buchanan put away goals in the 48th and 65th minutes, substitute Promise David scored in the 75th, and Nathan Saliba sealed the win with a goal in the 90th minute. Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair stopped all three on-target shots he faced from No. 75 Honduras. Canada will return to action on June 21 when the squad faces No. 90 Curaçao in Houston. The team will wrap up Group B play against No. 81 El Salvador on June 24. The winner and runner-up from each of the four groups advance to the knockout stage in the 16-team tournament. The finale will be held in Houston on July 6. Canada head coach Jesse Marsch was suspended for Tuesday's match, the first of a two-game suspension he received when he was sent off at the CONCACAF Nations League third-place game in March. He was replaced by Mauro Biello on the touchline. The Canadians settled into the game midway through the first half and took charge when Sigur scored in the 27th minute. The 21-year-old passed off to Jonathan David at the top of the penalty area and, when David chipped it right back, Sigur sent a right-footed shot sailing in past Honduras 'keeper Edrick Menjivar. It was his first goal for the national team and came in his sixth appearance. Oluwaseyi doubled the lead in the third minute of first-half injury time, collecting a pass from Richie Lareya and quickly blasting a shot into the top corner of the net from the side of the six-yard box. He celebrated by running to the touchline and grabbing the jersey of Canadian defender Sam Adekugbe, who's away from the team after suffering a torn Achilles tendon last week. Canada controlled 64.4 per cent possession across the first half, outshot the visitors 10-1 and held a 3-0 edge in on-target shots. The offensive onslaught continued early in the second half. Lareya crossed a ball into Oluwaseyi and the Minnesota United forward back heeled it to Buchanan. Stationed at the side of the six-yard box, Buchanan popped a shot up and in under the crossbar to give Canada a 3-0 lead in the 48th minute. The 26-year-old forward struck again in the 65th off a corner. Mathieu Choiniere swung a ball in and Oluwaseyi jumped up, trying to head it on net. The Honduran 'keeper made the stop, but couldn't cover the ball and Buchanan tucked it in for his second goal of the night. Promise David came on in the 71st minute for Oluwaseyi and quickly made an impact, scoring in the 75th. With less than a minute to go in regulation, Saliba fired a left-footed shot into the top corner of the Honduras net to seal the score at 6-0. Canada won the Gold Cup in 2000 and finished third in 2002. When the tournament was last held in 2023, the country lost to the United States in a penalty shootout in the round of 16. Tani Oluwaseyi scores twice in the second half and Minnesota claims its first-ever win in Seattle

Associated Press SEATTLE (AP) — Tani Oluwaseyi scored two goals in the second half and Minnesota claimed its first-ever win in Seattle with a 3-2 victory over the Sounders on Sunday. Minnesota (8-3-6) beat the Sounders (7-5-5) for just the second time in 16 meetings — and won in Seattle for the first time in nine tries. The Sounders also knocked out Minnesota in the 2020 Western Conference championship. Seattle (7-5-5) dropped its first game at Lumen Field this season, moving to 5-1-2. FC Cincinnati is the only MLS team yet to lose at home. Minnesota and Seattle combined for four goals in seven minutes, marking the ninth time in MLS history that two teams had four goals in eight-or-fewer minutes in a half. Oluwaseyi opened the scoring in the 51st minute when he was left alone at the penalty spot for a redirection of Robin Lod's back pass. Oluwaseyi scored again in the 58th on a rebound attempt for a 3-1 lead. Lod scored on a penalty kick in the 54th for a two-goal advantage. Kalani Kossa-Rienzi and Nicolas Romero scored for Seattle. PROTEST The Seattle players wore T-shirts before a match that read 'Club World Cup Ca$h Grab' to demand a share of the prize money for participating in the upcoming international tournament. ___ AP soccer: recommended in this topic
