Pearly-Thinaah's Historic Win At The Thailand Open Ends Malaysia's 40-Year Wait

Malaysia's well-decorated badminton players keep adding to their reputation as our homegrown athletes strive for their best every time they set out on the court. From grabbing world champion titles to history-making wins, their endless efforts to bring up wins for their country never fail to amaze. Over the weekend (18th May 2025), Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan made a historic win for the country as they became the first-ever Malaysians to win the Thailand Open in the women's category since the tournament began in 1984. The pair had a straight set victory against Korea with a 21-16 and 21-17 score. Previously, the pair were surrounded with speculation over their retirement from the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) to pursue a professional career, as well as a bump up in their salary package, which was said to be unequal to their achievements. The win at the Thailand Open silenced the talk as they clinched the win from Paris Olympic Silver medalist Jeong Naeun, paired with Lee Yeon Woo. 'I think it means a lot, to be honest, because we have not had a very good start, especially after losing in the first round at our home event, the Malaysian Open. But we never lost faith in each other', Tinaah comments at a post-match interview with BWF. Previously, the world number 4 pair in the women's doubles had also triumphed at the French Open in 2022, as they became the first Malaysian women's doubles pair to win that title as well. The pair's celebrations will be short-lived as they steadily prepare for the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2025, taking place from 20th to 25th May 2025 (Tuesday to Sunday). We congratulate the stellar pair on their historic win at the Thailand Open. Source: BWF Alyssa Gabrielle contributed to this article

Australian field hockey player who tried to buy drugs at the Paris Olympics returns from ban

SYDNEY (AP) — Field hockey player Tom Craig was recalled to the Australian national team on Friday after serving a six-month suspension for trying to buy drugs at the Paris Olympics. The Australian player was stripped of his Olympic privileges when he was arrested in Paris following the side's Games quarterfinal exit last year. He spent the night in a Paris jail after attempting to buy drugs but escaped without a fine or conviction. The 29-year-old Craig was later handed a 12-month suspension by Hockey Australia, of which six were suspended. That didn't prevent him from playing overseas. Craig kept his contract in Germany where he pushed for a test recall under new Kookaburras coach Mark Hager. Craig, who has played 142 games for Australia, will remain in Europe ahead of the side's next Pro League legs in Belgium, England and Germany. 'Keeping the gratitude front of mind,' Craig said of his mindset during the suspension. 'I can't really put to words how grateful I am for everyone who's supported me.' Craig won Olympic silver with the team in Tokyo four years ago. ___ AP Paris Olympics:

SC Freiburg preparing for the potential departure of Kiliann Sildillia

reports that SC Freiburg are preparing for the potential departure of right-back Kiliann Sildillia, as the Frenchman mulls over his future. Sildillia has been close to leaving Freiburg both in the winter and last summer but moves have never materialised. With his contract expiring in 2026, this would be the last time the Black Forest side could sell the 22-year-old for a decent fee. On top of this, the Olympic Silver medalist has the under-21 European championships this summer. If the 22-year-old does leave, then Freiburg's academy product Bruno Ogbus will be given the chance at right-back, while the club will also look at bringing in another younger option to compete with Lukas Kübler. Schalke's Taylan Bulut and Eintracht Frankfurt's Elias Baum are both candidates and are said to fit the profile Freiburg are looking for. Bulut is likely to leave Schalke in the summer and has a release clause worth €6-8m. While Baum will return to Frankfurt after the end of his loan spell at Elversburg in the summer, but if there are no prospects of first-team football, he could look to leave. GGFN | Jack Meenan
