Men can face double dementia risk if they have this hidden genetic mutation

A hidden genetic mutation could predict a man's likelihood of developing dementia. That's according to an Australian study led by Monash and Curtin Universities, which analyzed the medical data of thousands of Australians and Americans. Men who had a certain variant in the haemochromatosis (HFE) gene — which regulates iron levels in the body — were found to be at a higher risk of dementia, the researchers found. Previously healthy men over age 70 who have two copies of the variant, which is known as H63D, are at least twice — or up to four times — as likely to develop dementia. Having just one copy did not appear to elevate the risk. One in 36 men carry two copies of the mutation; one in three have just a single copy. 4 Men who had a certain variant in the haemochromatosis (HFE) gene were found to be at a higher risk of dementia, the researchers found. wirojsid – 'It is only men who have two copies of the variant that are at risk,' study co-author Professor John Olynyk from the Curtin Medical School told Fox News Digital. 'Women are not affected by the abnormality – we do not know why that is at the current point in time.' The study, which was published in the journal Neurology, used data from the ASPirin in Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) trial, which gathered health and aging data for 19,114 healthy older adults. Those who have the genetic variant can't change it, but it's possible that the 'brain pathways' it affects could be treated, Olynyk noted. 4 Those who have the genetic variant can't change it, but it's possible that the 'brain pathways' it affects could be treated, Olynyk noted. jamesteohart – 'The HFE gene is routinely tested for in most Western countries … when assessing people for haemochromatosis, a disorder that causes the body to absorb too much iron,' the doctor said. 'Our findings suggest that perhaps this testing could be offered to men more broadly.' Despite the fact that the HFE gene is responsible for controlling iron levels, the team found no direct link between iron and dementia risk. 'Our findings suggest that perhaps this testing could be offered to men more broadly.' Professor John Olynyk 'This points to other mechanisms at play, possibly involving the increased risk of brain injury from inflammation and cell damage in the body,' Olynyk added. More research is needed to determine why the heightened risk wasn't seen in women. 4 Despite the fact that the HFE gene is responsible for controlling iron levels, the team found no direct link between iron and dementia risk. djoronimo – 'Understanding why men with the double H63D variant are at higher risk could pave the way for more personalized approaches to prevention and treatment,' added co-author Professor Paul Lacaze from Monash University in a press release. The main limitation of the study, according to Olynyk, was that the study population was largely composed of Australians. 'Whether other populations exhibit the same effects is unclear,' he told Fox News Digital. 'Our work should be repeated in different countries to assess this.' 'Further research will be undertaken to try and determine the likely mechanism by which this anomaly causes dementia and what more we can do to reduce the impact of it.' 4 The main limitation of the study, according to Olynyk, was that the study population was largely composed of Australians. Monkey Business – Beyond this specific mutation, many other genetic and environmental factors can contribute to dementia risk, Olynyk noted. 'While genetic risk factors cannot be changed, the mechanisms by which these genetic abnormalities and environmental factors cause disease may well be modifiable to some extent, through adopting a healthy lifestyle and being proactive about maintaining an overall good state of health,' he said. To reduce risk, the researchers recommend adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes exercising regularly, eating a nutritious diet, minimizing alcohol intake, remaining mentally active, and seeing a doctor to address any medical problem known to increase the likelihood of dementia. The University of Melbourne, The Royal Children's Hospital, Murdoch Children's Research Institute and Fiona Stanley Hospital also contributed to the study.

Kelly Olynyk on the move again, this time traded to San Antonio, AP source says

Canadian Kelly Olynyk is getting traded for the third time in five months, this time going from Washington to San Antonio for two players and a second-round pick, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Tuesday night. The Wizards will receive Malaki Branham and Blake Wesley, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the trade was still pending the customary NBA approval. Olynyk was traded by Toronto to New Orleans in February as part of the deal that sent Brandon Ingram to the Raptors, then was moved by the Pelicans to the Wizards last month in the deal that sent Jordan Poole to New Orleans and CJ McCollum to Washington. He now moves on to the Spurs, where he'll add more front line depth to a team built around Victor Wembanyama. San Antonio also added big man Luke Kornet this summer and swung a deal last season for point guard De'Aaron Fox. Washington, which creates a $13 million trade exception with the deal and positions itself to add more salary during the season, gets two more young players and another pick — all the latest signs that the team is in asset-collection mode before next summer, when it could have $100 million in salary cap space. Olynyk has averaged 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds during his career. He's going into his 13th season, having already played in Boston, Miami, Utah, Toronto, Detroit, New Orleans and Houston. —- AP NBA:

Wizards reportedly trading Kelly Olynyk to the Spurs for Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley

Kelly Olynyk is on the move again. The Washington Wizards struck a deal to send Olynyk to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday afternoon, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. In exchange, the Wizards will receive Malaki Branham, Blake Wesley and a second-round pick in next year's draft. Advertisement The Spurs will mark the fourth team that Olynyk has played for in the past three seasons. He was dealt to Washington in a deal with the New Orleans Pelicans that was made official on Sunday, so he ended up spending about 48 hours with the franchise. This post will be updated with more information shortly.

Pelicans trading CJ McCollum, Kelly Olynyk to Wizards for Jordan Poole and Saddiq Bey

Article content The Pelicans are entering a new era under the direction of Joe Dumars — a former NBA champion as a player and general manager with Detroit — who was hired in April to replace David Griffin as executive vice president of basketball operations. Last week, Dumars acquired a second first-round draft choice — 23rd overall — to go with the club's seventh overall pick in a trade that send a 2026 first-rounder to Indiana. Olynyk, a Canadian, spent less than a season in New Orleans after being dealt by Toronto as part of a deal that sent high-scoring wing Brandon Ingram to the Raptors. The 12-year veteran has averaged 10.2 points and 5.2 rebounds during his career. Bey, a 19th overall pick out of Villanova in 2020, has averaged 14.1 points per game with Detroit and Atlanta. He spent last season with Washington but did not play while recovering from reconstructive knee surgery. In the short term, the deal could also make the Wizards more competitive. They were next-to-last in 3-point shooting last season; McCollum and Olynyk should be improvements there. McCollum is a locker room leader, a union president and still a very productive player — one of three players averaging at least 20 points in each of the last 10 seasons. The others are LeBron James and DeMar DeRozan.

Pelicans trade McCollum and Olynyk to the Wizards for Poole and Bey, AP source says

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The New Orleans Pelicans have agreed to trade veteran guard CJ McCollum, center Kelly Olynyk and a future second-round pick to the Washington Wizards for guard Jordan Poole, wing Saddiq Bey and the 40th overall pick in Thursday's second round of the NBA Draft, a person with knowledge of the agreement said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the trade has not been announced. McCollum, a 12-year veteran who has averaged 19.6 points per game throughout his career, now joins his third team since 2022 after spending the bulk of his career with Portland. Poole, a six-year veteran who has averaged 16.8 points per game, also joins his third franchise after spending his first four seasons with Golden State and the past two with the Wizards. The Wizards — who are clearly maximizing the youth movement now — will gain a ton of financial freedom in the deal, which they can use going forward to continue their rebuild. They easily could have around $100 million in cap space for the summer of 2026, largely by clearing $57 million in expiring contracts for McCollum and Olynyk this coming season. It's likely that Washington will look for guards with their two first-round picks Wednesday — No. 6 and No. 18 — and continue adding to the youth movement that started with the Bradley Beal trade.
