Oman Airports in talks with airlines for direct flights to Europe, China

Muscat - Focusing on the aeronautical side of the business, Oman Airports is in talks to attract new airlines into the region and create Muscat Airport as a hub for some. Eng. Ahmed bin Saeed al Amri, CEO of Oman Airports, said that the company is currently discussing with the budget airline Wizz Air the possibility of operating direct flights from European airports to the Sultanate of Oman, including from its hub in Budapest (Hungary), or other European cities. He hoped these routes would be launched soon. "Oman Airports is working in cooperation with the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Sultanate of Oman through incentives and packages to attract China Eastern Airlines to operate direct flights to Muscat, either via Shanghai or Guangzhou." The airline is also talking to LOT Polish Airlines to operate direct flights between Muscat and Warsaw, and the Civil Aviation Authority is in contact with its Polish counterpart to officially open this route. The CEO of Oman Airports also indicated that the commercial team, in cooperation with Oman Air, is studying the Vietnamese market and examining its potential and advantages. Regarding passenger and airline traffic to Salalah Airport, he confirmed that this year has seen a significant increase in arrivals, both during the autumn season via local flights and direct flights from GCC countries, and during the winter season, which attracts direct flights from Scandinavia and Belarus. Regarding Muscat International Airport, he explained that the number of passengers traveling to the airport is constantly increasing compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic, but there is some decline in the number of transfer passengers due to Oman Air reducing the number of flights and its fleet. 2022 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Oman in serious talks with Wizz Air after Abu Dhabi exit

MUSCAT: Oman Airports is in serious discussions with European budget airline Wizz Air to launch direct flights from European cities to the Sultanate, following the airline's announcement that it will cease operations in Abu Dhabi this September. Engineer Ahmed Said Al Amri, CEO of Oman Airports, confirmed to the Oman News Agency (ONA) that the company is actively engaged with Wizz Air on establishing routes connecting Muscat with European airports, including Budapest. 'The company is currently discussing with the budget airline Wizz Air the possibility of operating direct flights from European airports to Oman, whether via the Hungarian capital, Budapest, or other European cities,' Al Amri said. 'He indicated that the company is very serious about launching these routes soon,' ONA reported. The discussions come at a pivotal time for Wizz Air, which is winding down its Gulf operations and refocusing its strategy on core European markets. Oman, with its increasing appeal as a tourism and logistics hub, is actively positioning itself as a key alternative for international carriers seeking reliable regional access. Al Amri noted that attracting new airlines is part of a broader strategy by Oman Airports to enhance revenue streams and improve operational performance, in line with national objectives. Wizz Air's potential entry into the Omani market would significantly improve the Sultanate's connectivity with Europe and support its aviation and tourism growth goals. If the talks result in a finalised agreement, the new routes could launch in the near future. © Muscat Media Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Muscat eyes new flights from Europe, China and Vietnam

Muscat – Oman Airports is in discussions with several international carriers to launch new direct routes to the sultanate as part of efforts to boost revenue and improve operational performance. Ahmed bin Saeed al Amri, CEO of Oman Airports, said talks are underway with the Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air to operate direct flights from European cities, including Budapest, to Oman. 'The company is very serious about launching these routes soon,' Amri told ONA. Last week, Wizz Air announced that it was closing down its Abu Dhabi operations, allowing it to relocate capacity throughout Europe. Oman Airports is also working with the Embassy of China in Muscat to attract China Eastern Airlines to operate direct flights to Muscat from Shanghai or Guangzhou. Amri said incentives and promotional packages are being offered to support the launch of the service. He added that efforts are ongoing with LOT Polish Airlines to establish a direct connection between Muscat and Warsaw, with Civil Aviation Authority in contact with its Polish counterpart to formalise the route. Oman Airports' commercial team is also assessing the Vietnamese market for potential direct services in coordination with Oman Air. Ahmed bin Saeed al Amri, CEO of Oman Airports In Salalah, Amri noted a rise in passenger traffic this year. Growth has been seen during the ongoing khareef season with increased domestic and regional flights, and during the winter season with charter services from Scandinavia and Belarus. At Muscat International Airport, passenger numbers continue to rise compared to pre-pandemic levels. However, Amri acknowledged a drop in transfer passengers, linked to Oman Air reducing its flight frequency and fleet size. He informed that Oman Airports recently signed an agreement with Singapore's Changi Airports International to enhance commercial and aviation revenue streams at the country's airports. The partnership will include a review of key income sources such as aircraft parking and ground service equipment usage. Earlier this month, a memorandum of understanding was signed with Malaysia's WCT Berhad to explore investment and development opportunities for land around Muscat International Airport.

Oman Airports In Talks With Wizz Air For Direct Europe-To-Muscat Flights

Oman Airports is in advanced talks with European low-cost airline Wizz Air to operate direct flights between European cities and the Sultanate, following the carrier's decision to end its Abu Dhabi operations by September, according to the Oman News Agency (ONA). Engineer Ahmed Said Al Amri, CEO of Oman Airports, confirmed the negotiations, stating that discussions include potential routes linking Muscat to European hubs, including Budapest. 'We are seriously exploring the possibility of launching direct flights from various European airports to Oman — whether via Budapest or other cities,' Al Amri was quoted as saying by ONA. The talks come at a strategic moment, with Wizz Air set to wind down its presence in the Gulf and re-focus on core European markets. The potential Muscat expansion reflects both the airline's shift in focus and Oman's growing appeal as a regional aviation and tourism hub. Al Amri noted that attracting global carriers is part of Oman Airports' broader strategy to diversify revenue streams, improve operational efficiency, and support national objectives in aviation, logistics, and tourism. If finalised, the new routes would strengthen Oman's connectivity to Europe and potentially increase tourist traffic, reinforcing the Sultanate's position as a gateway to the Gulf and beyond.
