OLA signs agreements with insurance companies
The Omani Lawyers Association (OLA) signed a number of agreements with insurance companies operating in the Sultanate of Oman following the amendments issued in the new Omani Lawyers Law, promulgated by Royal Decree No 41/2024. This law requires law firms to insure themselves against professional errors. The signing took place at the headquarters of the Oman Lawyers Association (OLA) on Tuesday. The agreements were made with Arabia Falcon Insurance Company SAOG, Dhofar Insurance and Oman United Insurance Company SAOG. They will cover professional services such as legal consulting, judicial representation, legal documentation, arbitration and mediation. Additionally, they will cover employee breach of trust, loss of documents, defamation, slander, copyright infringement, breach of confidentiality, and loss mitigation clauses, all of which are automatically covered. "In a groundbreaking move to enhance the professional protection of lawyers and improve the quality of legal practice, the Oman Lawyers Association has signed agreements with insurance companies in the Sultanate of Oman to protect against possible errors by law firms," said Dr Hamad bin Hamdan al Rubaie, Chairman of the Board of Directors of OLA. The purpose of these agreements is to establish cooperation between the Association and insurance companies to provide professional liability insurance policies to lawyers and law firms. This will enhance the legal and professional protection of lawyers while they practice their profession. The agreements also cover financial losses resulting from professional errors, negligence, and omissions during legal practice, as well as legal expenses related to any claim covered under the policy. Furthermore, the agreements will allow lawyers and their families to obtain comprehensive or third-party insurance for their private vehicles at preferential rates and favourable terms in accordance with the Unified Insurance Policy issued in Oman. An insurance company stated that this initiative will create a safe professional environment for law firms. By forging agreements with insurance companies, appropriate and effective insurance solutions against professional liability will be provided to lawyers and law firms in Oman according to the terms and specifications in each agreement. However, it's important to note that these policies do not cover intentional acts, war, terrorism, cyber risks, insolvency, delays, infectious diseases, contractual liability and other exclusions as specified in the policy terms.

1,088 offenders freed through Fak Kurba initiative
A total of 1,088 cases involving minor financial offences were successfully resolved, and the offenders acquitted, under the Fak Kurba initiative launched by the Oman Lawyers Association (OLA), organisers confirmed. The humanitarian drive, now in its 12th edition, commenced on February 25, under the auspices of Dr Hamad bin Hamdan al Rubaie, Chairman of the OLA Board, and concluded on a highly positive note. Leading the tally, Al Batinah North Governorate recorded 334 releases, followed by Muscat Governorate with 242 cases. Other figures included 102 cases in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate, 95 in Al Batinah South Governorate, 67 in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, 65 in Al Dhahirah Governorate, 60 in Al Buraimi Governorate, 57 in Dhofar Governorate, 46 in Al Sharqiyah North Governorate, 16 in Al Wusta Governorate, and 4 in Musandam Governorate. Dr Mohammed al Zadjali, General Supervisor of Fak Kurba, remarked, 'Since its inception, the Fak Kurba Initiative has set an organised framework for humanitarian and social action in Oman. Over 12 years, we have alleviated the suffering of many destitute prisoners and helped restore stability to their families.' Speaking to Observer, Dr Hamad bin Hamdan al Rubaie, Chairman of OLA Board, explained that the initiative targeted insolvent individuals who were either imprisoned or had detention orders issued against them in commercial, civil, labour or Sharia cases, with claims not exceeding RO 2,000. Beneficiaries must not have previously availed the initiative. 'Priority was given to cases involving smaller claims, followed by larger claims and the oldest insolvent individuals,' he added, noting that cases were accepted solely via the Administrative Affairs Council for the Judiciary's General-Directorate of Execution. Operating under the slogan "Because we believe that people deserve a second chance", Fak Kurba has secured the release of nearly 10,000 individuals since its inception, offering hope and rebuilding lives across the Sultanate of Oman. The organisers highlighted the active support received from individuals, government bodies, and private institutions, underscoring the spirit of solidarity embedded within Omani society. 'We aim to sustain and expand this impactful initiative in the future, forging more partnerships across sectors to support an even greater number of cases,' Dr Al Rubaie said.

'Fak Kurba' facilitates the release of 511 financially distressed inmates
Muscat: The humanitarian initiative 'Fak Kurba' has successfully facilitated the release of 511 financially distressed inmates across various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman since the launch of its 12th edition. This effort has brought hope to the families of the released individuals and given them an opportunity for a fresh start. The highest number of released cases was in North Al Batinah Governorate with 169 cases, followed by South Al Batinah with 85, Al Dakhiliyah with 73, and South Al Sharqiyah with 57. Other included 49 cases in Al Dhahirah, 29 in Muscat, 18 in North Al Sharqiyah, 14 in Al Wusta, and three in Al Buraimi. Dr. Hamad bin Hamdan Al-Rubaie, Chairman of the Oman Lawyers Association, emphasised that this achievement would not have been possible without the collective support of the Omani community, including individuals and institutions, who generously contributed to the initiative. He highlighted this as a shining example of social solidarity that distinguishes Omani society and called for continued support for the initiative.

Bank Muscat extends support to Fak Kurba to resolve 346 cases
Muscat: In line with its ongoing commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility CSR and community service, Bank Muscat, the leading financial services provider in the Sultanate of Oman, has extended the impact of the 'Fak Kurba' initiative organised by the Omani Lawyers Association in coordination with the Ministry of Social Development and the Supreme Judicial Council. The initiative aims to raise financial donations to release individuals who are incarcerated due to failing to clear financial obligations. The Bank has actively contributed to the initiative by supporting 346 cases of individuals involved in civil, commercial, religious, and labor-related cases. Until now, the Bank has contributed to the resolve of 1903 cases, excluding cases related to banking or financial institutions. The 'Fak Kurba' initiative is an important volunteer-driven venture supported by the efforts of the Omani Lawyers Association and it aims to raise community awareness of the significance of social solidarity and bonds. Since it was launched in 2012, it has contributed to resolving many cases across the Sultanate and has been running as a year-round sustainable project. On this occasion, Hamad Hamdan Al Rubaie, Chairman of the Oman Lawyers Association, said: 'The success of this year's version of the Fak Kurba initiative reflects the continued positive and profound impact of this humanitarian project since its inception. Throughout the past years, the initiative has contributed to the resolve of over 7300 individuals.
