Omoda Jaecoo has introduced an updated E5 MY25.5 range, which now starts from $40,990 + ORC. Consisting of two highly equipped variants, BX and EX, the Omoda E5 is a value leader in the EV segment. Read our review of the original Omoda E5. Power now increases to 155kW, for easy acceleration in and out of town. The E5 can travel up to 430km (WLTP) on a single charge. Roy Munoz, Chief Commercial Officer, Omoda Jaecoo NZ said: 'Fine tuning an already competitive product, these changes represent another step forward for the Omoda brand.' 'We are committed to offering a class-leading driving experience and unbeatable value for money. All our vehicles and the updated E5 are a testament to this.' Standard features across the range include dual 12.3″ LCD instrument cluster and integrated multimedia touchscreen. Expect also 18-inch alloy wheels, premium steering wheel, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There's also a 'Hello Omoda' voice control system. The E5 offers an array of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). They comprise Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK), Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and Door Opening Warning (DOW). Step up to the EX variant ($44,990 + ORC) and there are heated front and outboard rear seats, colour selectable ambient lighting, and an eight-speaker Sony sound system. There's also a 50W wireless phone charger, rear privacy glass, a power sunroof with retractable sunshade and a surround view camera. Along with this update, the petrol-powered C5 has also received a facelift and follows the same variant naming convention. Both models are available in showrooms now. They are backed by Omoda's seven-year unlimited-kilometre warranty and up to seven years of roadside assistance. The high-voltage battery is covered by an eight-year unlimited-kilometre warranty.

Australia doesn't have too many car brands, says one of its newest arrivals
Australia has room for more car brands despite an influx of new automakers, according to Omoda Jaecoo's chief operating officer, but parent company Chery isn't imminently adding more to its local product offering. Speaking at the launch of the Omoda 9 plug-in hybrid SUV – the priciest model yet from the fledgling Omoda Jaecoo brand – chief operating officer Roy Muñoz said having more brands benefits Australian new car buyers. 'It's a good question,' Mr Muñoz told media, including CarExpert when asked about launching a new marque to compete with more than 70 existing brands in Australia's relatively small sales market of around 1.2 million vehicles annually. 'I think there's always room for new technology, a new brand – whether it's brand new or not – but new technology, certainly, and a different market position for Omoda Jaecoo.' CarExpert can save you thousands on a new car. Click here to get a great deal. 'I welcome competition because it breeds innovation, improves everyone's product offering and it gives more choice for Australians.' Omoda Jaecoo – pitched as being more upmarket than Chery's namesake brand – was announced in Australia earlier this year, with the Omoda name previously used on the Chery Omoda 5 and Omoda E5 SUVs that are now known as the Chery C5 and E5 respectively. It joins a raft of new and emerging makes including Zeekr, Denza and likely others in an already saturated Australian new car market. 'In terms of do we need another brand – well I think it's great that Australians are spoilt for choice, right – and we'll let them decide what suits their lifestyles and what suits their driving,' Mr Muñoz said. 'Omoda and Jaecoo obviously speak to different customers and market to different positioning of the product itself [compared to Chery].' 'If you can find your niche – which we're still in the process of identifying our customer – but if you can do that… and, looking beyond the product itself, where you can differentiate your brand rather than just looking at the physical product.' While the brand is called Omoda Jaecoo, the brand sells a variety of vehicles with either Omoda or Jaecoo badging with the latter having more traditional SUV styling. Omoda Jaecoo is one of almost a dozen of brands Chery offers in various countries around the world, which includes Exeed, Jetour and iCaur. While Chery Australia hasn't confirmed any additional brands – telling CarExpert it's currently focused on its Chery and Omoda Jaecoo brands – it hasn't ruled out adding to its offering in future. When asked about iCaur, which recently unveiled its Toyota LandCruiser -rivalling V27 large SUV, Mr Muñoz wouldn't confirm or reject the brand coming to Australia. 'It comes back to – if you find your niche, you find your customer, anything can work.'

Omoda 5 and E5 receive substantial upgrades after less than a year on sale
The Omoda 5 and all-electric Omoda E5 have received some significant upgrades after less than a year on sale following critical media reviews. Among the changes to the Hyundai Kona rival are revised suspension to improve handling and 'provide a more dynamic proposition to drivers.' To achieve this, the two cars have had their front suspension geometry tweaked and received a new electric steering system. They also have new front wheel hubs and bearings, and tweaked brake linings, which are supposed to help improve safety. Elsewhere, rather than having a different cabin design from its sibling, the petrol-powered Omoda 5 now features the same interior as the E5, including dual 12.25-inch displays. The gear selector is now a column-mounted stalk behind the steering wheel, which has also been tweaked, while the wireless charging pad has been moved to a more convenient spot on the centre console. Advertisement - Article continues below To maximise boot space, the Omoda 5's full-size spare wheel has been ditched, increasing luggage capacity from 372 litres to 430 litres. However that still can't match the 466-litre boot in the Kona, or the 492 litres of space you get in another rival, the Renault Symbioz. The Omoda 5's turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine is the same as before, meaning there's still no hybrid assistance, however power has dropped from 183bhp to 145bhp. Before, the mid-size SUV was capable of 0-62mph in 7.9 seconds, but we assume the updated model will need slightly longer to get the job done. If you're in the market for a hybrid SUV , the Omoda 5 has a sister car, the Jaecoo 7 , which is available for just over £250 per month right now through our own Find a Car service. Its plug-in 'Super Hybrid System' can deliver up to 56 miles of pure-electric driving. Meanwhile, the electric Omoda E5 has received a new 61kWh battery pack, which is the same size as before but more energy dense, allowing the electric SUV's range to increase from 257 to 267 miles. The maximum peak charging speed has also jumped from 80kW to 130kW, and an energy-saving heat pump will be fitted as standard on all models. The updated Omoda 5 is available to order now, with prices starting from £23,990 – £1,245 less than it cost last August, and nearly £3,000 less than the most basic Hyundai Kona – while the Omoda E5 starts from £33,065. Both versions are offered in Knight and Noble trims. Now you can buy a car through our network of top dealers around the UK. Search for the latest deals…
