Japan had hottest June on record
Japan's weather officials say the country had the hottest June on record, with the nationwide average temperature at more than 2 degrees Celsius above normal.
The Meteorological Agency said on Tuesday that last month was the hottest since recordkeeping began in 1898, with the average temperature at 2.34 degrees above normal.
It was also nearly one degree hotter than the previous June record posted five years ago.
A dominant high pressure system brought scorching heat across the country, and the seasonal rain front became unclear on the weather map.
The average temperature for June was 4.8 degrees higher than normal in Hokkaido's Omu Town, and 3.6 degrees higher in Sendai City.
Central Tokyo, which had a June record of 13 days with temperatures at 30 degrees or higher, was 2.8 degrees warmer than normal.
Agency officials say the severe heat is expected to continue this month.
