Michigan State football – focused on pass rush – reportedly adds transfer Cam Williams

Michigan State football continues to add to its roster at a position of need. The Spartans picked up another transfer in Cam Williams on Tuesday, according to the second edge rusher added since the end of spring practice April 19. Advertisement This will be the fourth school in six seasons for the 6-foot-5, 245-pound former three-star recruit from Loganville, Georgia. Williams began his career at Troy in 2020 and 2021, playing just one game for the Trojans. After transferring to Jacksonville State of the Football Championship Subdivision, Williams posted 22 tackles and a sack in 18 games over two seasons for the Gamecocks. Saturday, August 31, 2024; Statesboro, Georgia; Georgia Southern's Cam Williams attempts to stop Boise State's Cameron Bates during the season opener on Saturday, August 31, 2024 Paulson Stadium in Statesboro, Georgia. Last season after transferring to Georgia State, Williams had 19 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble in 10 games for the Panthers. MSU also added Texas Tech transfer Isaac Smith to help bolster its pass rush that finished tied for 111th in the Football Bowl Subdivision with 19 sacks – 15 in the first four games and four in the final two. The Spartans also brought in two other transfers, David Santiago (Air Force) and Anelu Lafele (Wisconsin), in the winter semester and return defensive ends Jalen Thompson and Quindarius Dunningan. Coach Jonathan Smith's defense lost Anthony Jones and James Schott as outbound transfers. Advertisement Smith also added tight end transfer Kai Rios from Indiana State over the weekend. In three seasons with the Sycamores, the 6-6, 260-pound native of Rock Island, Illinois, had eight catches for 69 yards and a touchdown in 21 games. UCLA, Tennessee swap quarterbacks

There are no trades in college football. However, two programs have performed a de facto signal-caller swap. With Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava transferring from Tennessee to UCLA, UCLA quarterback Joey Aguilar is now transferring to Tennessee. That's the word from Pete Nakos of Wake Forest and Tulane also were in the mix. Aguilar had transferred from Appalachian State to UCLA earlier this year. It's one of the basic realities of college football in the NIL era. Unless and until the universities recognize a union or Congress provides an antitrust exemption, the NIL-fueled chaos will continue.

Hurricanes lose a kicker and a corner to the transfer portal. One just arrived months ago

Cornerback Emmanuel Karnley arrived at Miami just four months ago after transferring from Arizona. He apparently isn't going to stay beyond that. Per Karnley is re-entering the transfer portal after failing to grab hold of a starting job during Hurricanes spring football. Also departing: kicker Abram Murray, who was beaten out (for now) by FAU transfer Carter Davis. UM added four cornerbacks in the transfer portal: Wisconsin's Xavier Lucas, Washington State's Ethan O'Connor, Michigan State's Charles Brantley and Karnley. By all accounts, Lucas was the best of the group and is a heavy favorite to start alongside OJ Frederique, who was limited by an injury in the spring. O'Connor and Damari Brown are in line for top boundary backup jobs, while Brantley and Brown are expected to compete for the top slot job in nickel coverage. Karnley played only 369 defensive snaps for Arizona last season and permitted 22 receptions in 43 targets for 288 yards and four touchdowns and no interceptions, which equals a 103.6 passer rating in his coverage area. He had 16 tackles in 2024 after redshirting in 2023. Karnley, who played high school football in Walnut Creek, California, was rated by 247 Sports as a three-star prospect and the 98th-best cornerback in the 2023 class. Players changing schools multiple times in an offseason is no longer uncommon. Last year, former Vanderbilt safety Savion Riley joined UM before spring practice, left for Colorado after spring practice and this week announced he's joining Georgia Tech. Defensive end Tyler Barron joined UM last offseason after briefly being committed to two other schools. As for the kicking job, Murray struggled this spring and leaves a year after joining UM as the No. 4-rated kicker in the country. That leaves Davis as the front-runner to replace NFL-bound Andres Borregales. Davis was just 4 for 11 on field goals at FAU but made two 50-plus yard field goals, was perfect on extra points (23 for 23) and has a high touchback rate on kickoffs; 46 of his 61 kickoffs weren't returned last season. Here's my Monday piece on Canes portal targets and visits lined up and Lane Kiffin trolling Carson Beck.

Two Miami Hurricanes defenders reportedly entering the portal. What to know

Zaquan Patterson, who arrived at Miami 15 months ago with the expectation of becoming an eventual starter and the possibility of joining the long list of distinguished Hurricanes safeties, is leaving the program, reported Monday evening. Patterson is set to enter the transfer portal when the second cycle opens on Wednesday. Backup defensive tackle Joshua Horton also is reportedly entering the portal. 247 Sports rated Patterson the No. 6 safety and No. 92 overall prospect in the 2024 class. And the Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna product flashed as a freshman, producing 19 tackles and three passes defended in 12 games and 159 defensive snaps, which were the 20th most among UM's defensive players. Quarterbacks had an 85.4 passer rating in his coverage area, with four completions in eight targets for 80 yards, per Pro Football Focus. Patterson was considered an early front-runner to join Jacksonville State transfer Zechariah Poyser as UM's starting safeties. But Patterson missed the first two weeks of practice with an injury and was limited the past two weeks. He committed a penalty while wearing a cast on his arm during the second half of Saturday's scrimmage. His departure leaves Dylan Day and Markeith Williams as the top internal options for the starting job opposite Poyser, who was impressive this spring. Patterson's departure likely will intensify UM's efforts to find a starting caliber safety in the portal. Freshman Amari Wallace, who had an interception in the spring game, summer freshman arrival Bryce Fitzgerald and former Arizona safety Isaiah Taylor (son of UM assistant coach Jason Taylor) are the other safeties on scholarship. New defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman last week did not rule out playing a cornerback at safety. UM has good depth at corner and Hetherman spoke of a positionless defense that would play the best 11. Meanwhile, Horton departs after appearing in five games last season and seven over two seasons with the Hurricanes, all off the bench. He played just 28 defensive snaps last season. 247 Sports rated Horton the No. 50 defensive lineman in the 2023 signing class. He was a four-star prospect out of Langston Hughes High in Georgia. Horton was injured during spring practice and did not participate in Saturday's spring game. UM was not counting on him having a significant role this coming season. The Canes likely will look to add defensive tackle depth in the portal behind David Blay, Justin Scott and Ahmad Moten.
