'Words I never expected...': Elmo's X account goes rogue with offensive messages, sends netizens into frenzy
Elmo from Sesame Street sent social media into a frenzy after the character's X account was hacked on Sunday, according to Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit organization behind Sesame Street. The antagonist used the lovable red monster as a mouthpiece to promote antisemitic views, boost an obscure crypto toy company and belabor on controversy surrounding the elusive Jeffrey Epstein files . The Muppet character, who currently enjoys more than 646,000 followers on the social media platform, posted a slew of inflammatory remarks, including antisemitic and racist views and a foulmouthed message aimed at President Donald Trump. The account also replied to many users with similar offensive language but all of the posts and replies were deleted later. The hacker started off small by posting a picture of Elmo on the moon celebrating the crypto toy exchange OnChain Studios before quickly deviating from the lovable children's character's usual lingo and calling for violence against Jewish people. We are working to restore full control of the account." What is Elmo? According to Elmo is a furry red Muppet monster who lives on Sesame Street. He is self-described as three-and-a-half years old, and almost always refers to himself in the third person. The character's popularity led to his own segments on Sesame Street beginning with "Elmo's World." Elmo lives in an apartment on Sesame Street with his mother, Mae, his father, Louie, and, in some storybooks, a sister named Daisy. His pets have included a number of goldfish, with Dorothy being the most prominent, and a dog named Tango, who was introduced in 2021. After the Elmo's account was hacked, it drew massive reaction from the netizens. Some users mocked the situation because of the shocking adult language coming from a children's character account. One user commented, 'I'm forever scarred by Elmo.' Republican senator Mike Lee wrote on X of Elmo's hacking: "I'm forever scarred ... by @elmo. Words I never expected to utter." The red monster's rampage comes less than a week after X's artificial intelligence engine Grok dubbed itself 'Mecha Hitler' after an update from CEO Elon Musk pushed it to start consuming more users' extremist views. In 2013, a Times Square panhandler dressed as Elmo snapped and threatened to extort the beloved Girl Scouts for $2 million over a fabricated harassment case. The year before his baseless attack on the youth organization, the same Elmo was arrested after he started shouting that 'Jews are responsible for everything that's wrong with the world!' in the middle of Times Square.
