Paddy's Pond industrial area evacuating due to out-of-control wildfire

The provincial government has issued an evacuation order for the Paddy's Pond industrial area. The evacuation zone includes Akita Equipment and surrounding buildings and hangars. It comes after the Thomas Pond wildfire ignited along the pole line near Paddy's Pond, between the Trans-Canada Highway and Fowler's Road, around noon on Monday. The RCMP said the Trans-Canada Highway has re-opened, but secondary roads in the Paddy's Pond evacuation area remain closed. Fowler's Road at Peacekeepers Way is also closed to southbound traffic. In a post on social media Monday afternoon, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said police, emergency, and fire services are at the scene. "Members of the community are asked to avoid the area while emergency responders navigate response and suppression efforts," the post said. WATCH | Paddy's Pond fire has residents of nearby communities on edge: Akita Equipment co-owner Amy Furey Howlett also posted on social media on Monday afternoon. She asked anyone with a Class 1 driver's licence for help, as the company worked to move its equipment away from its facility on Paddy's Pond Road. According to the province's active wildfire dashboard on Monday afternoon, the out-of-control fire was 170 hectares in size. Provincial fire duty officer, Mark Lawlor, said three water bombers were diverted from the Kingston fire to try to suppress the Thomas Pond fire. Helicopters and firefighters from the St. John's Regional Fire Department are also on the scene. Lawlor told CBC's On The Go that all efforts are concentrated on keeping the wildfire away from the Conception Bay Highway. "We're trying to work that fire literally into Paddy's Pond if we can. We're going to try and work the northern flank, and turn the fire as best we can. That's the goal," Lawlor said. "The primary concern is to try to ensure that it doesn't reach the C.B.S. highway and cross over." Premier John Hogan said there is no imminent danger to anyone living in the communities near Paddy's Pond, but the wildfire is moving fast. "It's moving toward Paddy's Pond right now," Hogan said during a live wildfire update Monday afternoon. He said power interruptions are expected. Lawlor confirmed that one transmission line has been shut down after Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro posted a public advisory on its website. It said the fire is directly in the public utility's transmission corridor, which serves the St. John's metro area. "There is a potential for smoke, fire and/or fire suppression efforts to impact these lines. In the unlikely scenario that multiple lines are impacted, this could result in a power outage to St. John's and surrounding areas," the advisory said. The Town of Conception Bay South issued a traffic advisory following the evacuation order. The town asked drivers to avoid the C.B.S Industrial Park and Fowler's Road. Mayor Darrin Bent told CBC News some drivers were stopping to take photos of the smoke along Peacekeepers Way, and it was causing traffic delays and congestion along the highway. The Town of C.B.S. is also closing all of its indoor and outdoor recreation facilities to reduce unnecessary travel within the town and on town roads. Drivers are asked to avoid unnecessary travel through the town at this time. Meanwhile, the City of St. John's is advising that smoke from the fire has reduced air quality throughout the city and its surrounding areas. "Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and to turn off air exchangers and HVAC units to help reduce indoor smoke exposure," City of St. John's spokesperson, Jackie O'Brien said in a news release.

Co-op takes on Greggs and Pret with ‘On The Go' micro stores serving hot pizza, fried chicken and domestic essentials

THE Co-op is opening 15 'On The Go' micro stores to take on takeaway giants Greggs and Pret. The first store launched yesterday, serving hot pizza, fried chicken, ready meals, and essentials such as toothpaste and loo roll. 3 Ranging from 600 to 1,000 square feet, the new stores will be about a quarter the size of a typical Co-op and focus on convenience products. They'll open from 7am to 7pm, with some switching to become home delivery hubs in the evening. Boss Matt Hood said the concept was inspired by a Far East trend. He added: 'We believe there is demand for delicious food, fast service, value and spot-on locations.' The Co-op, which already has a 15 per cent share of the UK's 'food to go' market, is aiming to grab a bigger slice. 3 The first store is in Solihull and more are planned for high streets, train stations and busy urban spots. Some older Co-op stores could be revamped to fit the new style. Mr Hood said that after bouncing back from a major cyber-attack earlier this year, the Co-op is now focused on giving shoppers exactly what they need, when they need it. Hyderabad to witness Gallery G's travelling exhibition, On The Go, featuring master artists VS Gaitonde, Surya Prakash, Yusuf Arakkal, and others

Hyderabad will witness a showcase of artworks by some of India's celebrated artists this weekend. On The Go, a travelling exhibition curated by Bengaluru's Gallery G, will be on view from July 11 to 13 at Taj Krishna, Hyderabad. Art lovers can expect to view paintings and sculptures by VS Gaitonde, Surya Prakash, Manu Parekh and Ganapati Hegde, among several others. Gitanjali Maini, founder of Gallery G, says the curation for Hyderabad is different from On The Go that debuted in Kochi in May. 'Each city has its own cultural pulse, so the curation shifts accordingly. Hyderabad called for a bolder blend of heritage and modernism.' Factoring in the short duration and the intimate setting of the venue, she says the curation intends to focus on artworks that have likely never been showcased in the city before. 'With a strong base of collectors and art lovers here, we wanted to present unseen pieces that would engage a discerning audience,' adds Gitanjali. The featured artists include modern masters such as MF Husain, Yusuf Arakkal, and S M Pandit, alongside Sangeeta Baid, Ganapati Hegde, Jai Khanna, Avinash Veeraraghavan, Bharti Prajapati and Srinivasulu. The exhibition will also spotlight Tanjore and Mysore-style paintings, and sculptures from Kerala. On The Go will showcase artworks predominantly drawn from Gallery G's collection, in addition to those sourced from private collectors in Bengaluru. Gitanjali's idea was to build visual narratives that will appeal to both art lovers and curious newcomers, by 'pairing iconic works with accessible, engaging stories. We want people to pause, connect, and walk away having felt something, whether or not they have studied art.' Among the exhibits, look out for a heritage imperial silver filigree furniture set. 'This is the first time a piece from a private collection in Bengaluru is being shown publicly,' reveals Gitanjali. 'Space constraints allow us to exhibit only one part of the magnificent set, but it represents a larger trove of regal silverware sourced from palaces across India and beyond — including pieces once gifted to or associated with historic southern courts. Historian Manu S. Pillai, who has documented the collection, , offers insights into its provenance, symbolism, and regional affiliations. We chose to debut it in Hyderabad because the city has an audience that values legacy, craftsmanship and heritage.' On The Go will travel to other Indian cities, including Coimbatore and Raipur. Gallery G is also working towards an edition in London. On The Go will be on view from July 11 to 13, at Taj Krishna, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.
