Tributes pour in as iconic rock star dies aged 77

He was best known for his work with legendary musicians such as Eric Clapton and George Harrison. Bobby Whitlock, iconic singer-keyboardist and co-founder of 70s blues-rock band Derek and the Dominos alongside Eric Clapton, has died aged 77. His manager, Carol Kaye, confirmed the news to Variety. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, on March 18, 1948, Whitlock was signed to Stax Records at an early age and played with artists like Booker T. and the MG's and Sam & Dave. He later became an integral member of Delaney & Bonnie and Friends, meeting Clapton while his band opened Clapton's supergroup Blind Faith. Following the release of Delaney & Bonnie's live album On Tour with Eric Clapton in 1970, Whitlock was invited to reunite with Clapton on his debut solo album and to accompany George Harrison in the studio for All Things Must Pass. Accompanied by Carl Radle and Jim Gordon, Clapton and Whitlock started Derek and the Dominos as a blues-rock group, releasing their 1971 double LP Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, widely considered to be one of rock's greatest albums. Speaking to Best Classic Bands in 2015, Whitlock commented on the supergroup's early breakup by calling it 'lightning in a bottle'. 'We did one club tour, we did one photo session, then we did a tour of a bit larger venues,' he continued. 'Then we did one studio album in Miami. We did one American tour. Then we did one failed attempt at a second album. 'Everybody was doing entirely too much drugs and alcohol,' he admitted at the time, while also recognising that Drek and the Dominoes were 'the very best band on the planet… We were better than anybody.' Following the band's breakup, Whitlock went on to release a string of studio albums in the 70s, including a self-titled record in 1972, which included all the members of the recently split group. He also made an uncredited appearance on the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main Street, and has claimed to have been cheated out of a co-writing credit for the song 'I Just Want to See His Face'. He also appeared as a guest musician on self-titled albums by Clapton and Doris Troy, Dr. John's The Sun, Moon & Herbs and Stephen Stills & Manassas' Down the Road. In 2024, Whitlock was awarded a Brass Music Note on Memphis' own Beale Street Walk of Fame for his work.

PVL: Chen Tagaod delivers clutch aces as Akari sweeps Petro Gazz for QF berth

Chen Tagaod torched Petro Gazz from the service line as Akari completed a hard-fought 32-30, 25-22, 25-19 win in the 2025 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) On Tour knockout round on Tuesday at the PhilSports Arena. The rookie outside spiker out of Far Eastern University delivered four of the Chargers' last five points, highlighted by three huge aces in a row, as they advanced to the quarterfinals where they will go up against Cignal. Tagaod's heroics sealed Akari's gritty straight-sets victory. Both teams figured in an extended Set 1 with the Angels, the reigning All-Filipino Conference champions, forcing a 30-all deadlock on a power kill from Myla Pablo. But Ivy Lacsina came up with two straight attacks from the left wing to close out the opening frame, 32-30. Akari once again raced to an early lead in Set 2 with Ezra Madrigal returning an overpass from Petro Gazz for a 23-18 cushion before Petro Gazz answered with a 4-1 rampage to trim the gap to two, 22-24. Grethcel Soltones then unleashed one from the left side and used the hands of Joy Dacoron to secure a check-out point, sending Akari to a commanding 2-0 set lead. Akari clinched an early 10-5 lead in the third frame before Petro Gazz responded with a 9-2 blast that swung the lead into their favor, 14-12. But Soltones, Tagaod, and Eli Soyud fueled the finishing touches with Soyud unloading a hammer from the opposite side before a Pablo attack error made it a 20-17 lead for Akari. Petro Gazz retaliated with two points in a row but Tagaod came alive, attacking from the left wing before serving up three straight aces to deliver the match point at 24-19. Soltones punctated the sweep, completing a cross court attack and eliminating the Angels from contention. —JMB, GMA Integrated News

Akari finally ends slump in PVL On Tour with five-set escape vs. ZUS

Akari needed to survive a grueling affair against a pesky ZUS Coffee to finally break through in the 2025 PVL On Tour, escaping with a 26-24, 25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 17-15 win on Saturday at the Ynares Center Montalban. The Chargers improved to 1-2 after opening the preseason contest with back-to-back losses to Cignal and Creamline. The Thunderbelles, meanwhile, had a tough way to open their campaign as they fell to 0-1. Grethcel Soltones led the way for the hungry Akari, flirting with a triple-double of 23 points, 11 digs, and nine receptions as they turned back ZUS to barge into the win column. The veteran outside spiker unloaded a strong kill that saw Akari taking a slim 8-7 lead before another seasoned wing spiker in Eli Soyud came alive to further extend the lead. The opposite spiker converted three straight points, including a pair of attacks and a rejection on Chinnie Arroyo, before Soltones made something out of an out-of-system setup from Ezra Madrigal to make it a 12-9 lead. But ZUS fought back thanks to middle blocker Maika Ortiz, whose two consecutive blocks powered a 3-0 run for a 12-all deadlock. Akari was the first to clinch the match point, but an attack error from Chenie Tagaod saw the game knotted at 15-all once more. Ced Domingo then completed a running play before Kate Santiago went wide on their combination play as Akari gutted out the hard-fought victory. In the first game, Chery Tiggo opened its On Tour debut in style after overcoming a slow start to pull off a 20-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-12 victory over the struggling Capital1. Cess Robles led with 17 points and nine digs while rookies Baby Jyne Soreño and Renee Peñafiel impressed with 15 and 11 markers apiece as they kept the Solar Spikers winless at 0-3. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
