She wears a tiara so you don't have to: Manitoba business bringing the magic back

Lindsay Rae is in the business of make-believe. On paper, she runs a children's entertainment company. In practice, she's a woman who once looked at a miniature pony and thought, You're going to need a horn. Her company is called A Country Princess, and what she does is deliver magic on demand to children who still believe in it, and to parents who love seeing pure joy on their child's face. At any given time, Lindsay Rae or one of her staff might be transforming into a snow queen, a web-slinging vigilante, a holiday elf, or any of the other 15-ish characters she and her crew have conjured into reality. Her events come with gowns, glitter, the plumber brothers, and sometimes, a unicorn (technically: A small pony with pointy headwear). 'I mean, honestly? It probably started when my parents took me to Disney World when I was two,' she says, laughing. 'It was 11 o'clock at night, and I was still asking, 'What are we doing next?' They were like, 'You're two. It's bedtime.' But it wasn't bedtime, not really. Not for someone who still believes in magic. She stumbled into her first party almost by accident, a promotional princess party for the business she worked for. She put on a costume, smiled, stayed in character, and something shifted. 'People just started asking, 'Can you come to my event?'' she recalls. Soon she had a calendar full of princess appearances and needed some extra help. So, she hired help. And the whole thing became official. A Country Princess was born. 'It's really interesting when you start your own business,' she says. 'You hit this point where you're either going to give up or take a leap. And then that happens over and over.' Each leap made the next one a little less terrifying. And each child's stunned, beaming, cotton candied face made the whole endeavor feel less like work and more like a mission. 'Sometimes a parent will say, 'This is just like Disney World,'' She says. 'And I think… okay. That's enough. That's the whole reason.' There are nervous moments, of course. Like the time she stood backstage at one of her first parties wondering if any of this was going to work and if pretending to be someone else for the sake of joy was a thing grown-ups are still allowed to do. 'And then you walk out,' she says, 'and there's that moment. The look on their faces. That's it. That's what I'm supposed to be doing.' On July 30, she's going bigger. A full-band musical event called Once Upon a Tune will take over Bethel Park in Winkler. There will be cotton candy. There will be an ice-cream truck. There will be princesses and superheroes and songs. And for at least one little girl or boy, somewhere between the face painting and the spider guy hug, it will be the most magical day of their life so far. Because that's what Lindsay Rae does. She brings the magic. The rest of us just try to keep up. Learn more at — Steven Sukkau is a Local Journalism Initiative reporter who works out of the Winnipeg Sun.
