"There were elements of me that were afraid": Ryan Phillippe on playing gay teen in 'One Life To Live' in early 1990s
Actor Ryan Phillippe admitted that a part of him was "afraid" when he accepted the role of Billy Douglas on the popular daytime soap opera 'One Life to Live' in the early 1990s, reported People. The character was the first gay teenager in daytime television history. Phillippe played Billy for a year on the show and said it was a "really profound experience" for him. In an interview with People, the actor admitted that he was "afraid" when he was young while accepting the role of a gay character in the series. "I was so young that there were elements of me that were afraid because it was such a different time," Philippe said, adding that people close to him also advised him to turn down the role and discouraged him from accepting the part, as quoted by People magazine. "I think there were some fears associated with the point in time that we were at and it being before so many walls and ceilings have been broken in that regard. But I know that any fears that anyone had about me doing it immediately went away once I saw the reaction that it got from the people who viewed it," said Philippe as quoted by People magazine. However, despite the fear, the actor chose the role that rewarded him handsomely. Phillippe was widely loved by the fans of the show and the people of the LGBTQ+ community. In an interview with People, the actor said that the feedback from 'One Life to Live' viewers about his role as Billy was "almost instantaneous," as fan mail started pouring in. ' He remembers hearing from fans who had "never seen someone represent me in any entertainment before in my life." Phillippe would also get mail from parents saying: "Watching this show on my lunch break gave me a way to connect with my LGBTQ child," reported People. "And I was only 17 years old, so you don't really have a sense of that. It was such a different time, but I very much matured through having had that experience and seeing the impact that it had for others," added Phillippe as quoted by People. Dobies passed away on Mar. 11 in New Jersey, according to a local obituary; no cause of death has been released. Dobies played football in college before turning to acting, joining the cast of CBS' Guiding Light in 2000 as Noah Chase, a doctor who became a love interest for Kim Zimmer's Reva Shayne. Smith's Nora Buchanan, only for her to learn he was a cheater — and a murderer. He killed Paul Cramer after Cramer threatened to reveal Daniel was having an affair with a man. The portrayal of a murderous gay man led to a protest from GLAAD, who felt the storyline reinforced negative stereotypes about the LGBTQ community. But executive producer Frank Valentini stood behind the story, insisting that 'this is a story about the harsher side of intolerance and about one man not being true to himself.' Aside from his daytime work, Dobies had guest roles on Home Improvement, Melrose Place, Everybody Loves Raymond, Just Shoot Me!, Fringe and Gossip Girl. He also appeared in the 2004 off-Broadway revival of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart. In Daredevil: Born Again, Who Does the Late Kamar de los Reyes Play?
When Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again debuts Tuesday, March 4, with its first two episodes (of nine), the second episode will be presented 'In Loving Memory of Kamar de los Reyes,' as noted on an opening title card. De los Reyes — who was well known for his run as One Life to Live's Antonio Vega, and other TV roles including Sleepy Hollow antagonist Jobe and All American's Coach Montes — passed away on Christmas Eve 2023, after a brief battle with cancer. Daredevil: Born Again had started production in March 2023, paused for the dual Hollywood strikes coupled with a creative overhaul, and resumed in January 2024. Doctor Who Season 15 Will Stream on Saturdays, Starting in April - Alan Cumming to Voice Cartoon Character In Daredevil: Born Again, de los Reyes can be seen in multiple episodes as Hector Ayala, a martial arts master who draws powers from magical Jade Tiger amulets and suits up as a vigilante known as White Tiger. When Hector is found at what looks like a murder scene and promptly lands in prison, Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) boldly decides to take on the case, landing the lawyer squarely in the crosshairs of longtime adversary/new-ish NYC mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) and his anti-vigilante agenda. 'That story is so poignant for Matt Murdock and his world,' Daredevil: Born Again headliner Cox told Empire Magazine, 'because he's having to defend someone who does what he does without revealing to the world that coincidence.' When a trailer for Daredevil: Born Again debuted at last October's New York Comic Con, de los Reyes' widow, actress Sherri Saum (The Fosters) — whom he met on the set of OLTL, where she played Keri Reynolds — shared it on social media, remarking, 'This is awesome. This is the project @kamardelosreyes was working on when he fell ill, but he finished it and he was so proud of it. So badass.' Saum went on to thank Daredevil: Born Again and the franchise's fans 'eternally' for 'loving him and giving him such support. 'It's bittersweet,' she acknowledged, 'but I cannot wait to see [it].' And see it, she did. Saum was on hand for this week's Daredevil: Born Again's New York premiere event, which she attended with her and de los Reyes' twin sons, John and Michael, and de los Reyes' son Caylen. Beyond his upcoming Daredevil: Born Again run, de los Reyes will also be seen in Sterling K. Brown's upcoming Hulu drama, Washington Black. And Just Like That, General Hospital's Brennan Is No Longer Australian! — Why the Role Was Recast
General Hospital viewers on Tuesday afternoon said g'day to a brand-new Jack Brennan, although the veteran WBS spook no longer sounds like the Aussie he is. That's because the ABC sudser recast Brennan with One Life to Live alum Chris McKenna, in the wake of Charles Mesure's exit from the role. More from TVLine Doctor Odyssey Plots Shark Attack-Themed Midseason Premiere - Exclusive First Look Charles Mesure Exits General Hospital; OLTL Vet to Take Over Role of Brennan The Rookie's Mekia Cox: Hunt for Serial Killer Is 'Definitely One of the Darker' Storylines for Nyla Mesure is a British-born Australian, so he and his voice brought an undeniable international flair to the character — very in keeping with the likes of fellow World Security Bureau spies Robert Scorpio (Australian), Anna Devane (British) and the late Sean Donely (Irish-American) — whereas McKenna was born in Queens, N.Y. No bit of on-air dialogue in Tuesday's episode attempted to account for Brennan's suddenly non-Aussie voice, though such a stark switcheroo is nothing new to daytime soap recasts. Characters get taller, shorter, younger, older, stop being Asian…. We've seen it all before. Plus, longtime GH fans are well aware what can happen when an Australian accent is foisted upon an actor, which was the case when John J. York made his 'splashy' February 1991 debut as Robert's brother, Mac. York, bless him, did his best to sound Australian, even getting help from TV brother Tristan Rogers. Mac even opened a restaurant called The Outback! But over time, York and Mac, with the producers' blessing, slipped into a decidedly non-Aussie voice. Let's revisit Mac's arrival in Port Charles (via the harbor, specifically), then continue our assessment of the Brennan recast: With this week's recast of Brennan comes another question, shared by a Marie Jo on X among others: Are we are to now buy thus guy as a WSB peer of Anna's when McKenna is the nearly same age as GH vet Kimberly McCullough, who played Anna and Robert's daughter Robin?! (Mesure at least had an extra decade or so on McKenna.) As first reported by the Soap Opera Digest website and then confirmed by ABC, 'Charles Mesure opted to exit the role of Brennan,' which he originated back in December 2023. 'We wish him all the best in his future endeavors,' said the soap rep. Mesure's final appearance as Brennan aired Jan. 30. McKenna started out his acting career as one of OLTL's many, many Joey Buchanans. His TV credits also include The CW's 90210, NBC's one-and-done State of Affairs, CBS' The Young and the Restless (as Detective Mark Harding), Major Crimes and Good Trouble (playing Marc Rothman). His most recent primetime gig was a February 2024 episode of NCIS.
