Heavy traffic expected at Singapore-JB land checkpoints over National Day long weekend

The National Day long weekend is right around the corner, and for some of us, that means only one thing: time to go to Johor Bahru. But as seasoned border-crossers would know, practically half of Singapore will have the same idea, spelling jams at the land crossings and long queues at immigration checkpoints. The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) certainly expects heavy traffic at Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints in the lead up to and during the National Day weekend (August 8 to 10). The trend indeed suggests so: the June holidays this year saw more than 525,000 travellers crossing both land checkpoints, an almost 10% increase from the same period last year; a record number of crossings in a single day was also made on June 20. Besides heavy traffic, ICA has also advised travellers to expect longer waiting times for immigration clearance. If all this doesn't deter you from going to JB anyway, here's what you need to know to make your journey as smooth as possible. What are the peak periods to avoid? ICA has not released exact peak period timings, but taking previous years as a guide, here's when you might want to avoid: Departing Singapore between 3pm and 11.59pm on Friday (August 8) Departing Singapore between 6am and 10am, and 4pm and 9pm on Saturday (August 9) Entering Singapore between 5pm and 7pm on Sunday (August 10), and 1pm and 11.59pm on Monday (August 11) ICA also advised travellers to opt for cross-border bus services instead of driving to Malaysia to avoid getting caught in the traffic jams. Where can I check the traffic situation? Of course, the situation on the ground is always dynamic. Your best bet is to check the traffic situation at the Land Transport Authority's One Motoring website or the Expressway Monitoring & Advisory System on the Bukit Timah and Ayer Rajah expressways before departing. What else can I do for a smoother journey? Check that your passport is valid for at least six months before departing for Malaysia. Singapore permanent residents who recently renewed their passports will also have to transfer their re-entry permit (REP) to the new passport. Long-term pass holders, on the other hand, should notify ICA or the Manpower Ministry if there are any changes in their passport particulars before re-entering Singapore. If you're travelling by car or motorcycle, do use QR codes instead of your passport for faster immigration clearance. You can get more information from the ICA website. Similarly, those going by bus can generate QR codes from the MyICA website in lieu of passports at immigration.

Crackdown on Illegal Rides: 12 Motorists Booked for Unauthorized Private-Hire Services in Singapore

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said that during an enforcement operation last week, 12 drivers were found to be offering unlawful private-hire services. Illegal cross-border services and unlicensed point-to-point transportation are examples of such services. On Tuesday, July 29, the LTA reported that four of these drivers had been arrested close to Punggol Road and Turf Club Avenue and all the cars were seized. For the benefit of licensed drivers' interests and passenger safety, the LTA announced that it is stepping up enforcement against these unlawful services. It will follow up on tips from the National Private Hire Vehicles Association and patrol on a regular basis. All drivers must possess a Public Service Vehicle License in order to provide taxi or private-hire car services in this area. Taxis registered in Malaysia are also required to possess an Asean Public Service Vehicle Permit. The LTA cautioned the public against using illegal private ride-hailing services because the drivers might not be properly licensed or insured to protect their passengers in the event of an accident. LTA said, "Your journey may be disrupted if the illegal service you're using is caught in our enforcement ops." Since 2022, 116 drivers have been apprehended using foreign-registered vehicles to conduct illegal cross-border passenger transport services. Those who have been charged and found guilty face penalties such as forfeiture of their vehicles and fines of up to S$2,600. If found guilty of offering unlawful ride-hailing services, the maximum penalty could be up to S$3,000 in fines, up to six months in jail, or both. Additionally, their cars might be seized and forfeited. The public can use the LTA's OneMotoring website to fill out an online form to report unlawful ride-hailing services.

New online channel for public to report illegal ride-hailing services

10 illegal chauffeurs had their foreign-registered vehicles impounded during a sting conducted at Changi Airport on July 18 SINGAPORE - It is now easier for the public to report illegal ride-hailing services with a new online form the Land Transport Authority (LTA) launched on its OneMotoring website. This initiative is part of LTA's ongoing crackdown on unlicensed drivers providing point-to-point transport services within Singapore, as well as those ferrying passengers across the border to Malaysia The new reporting platform went live on July 20. Submissions will be used by the LTA for investigations. As at July 23, the agency has yet to receive any reports through the new channel. Senior Minister of State for Transport Sun Xueling said on Facebook on July 23 that the reporting channel was set up for users to provide information on foreign-registered cars providing ride-hailing services. 'Let us work together to protect the interests of both passengers and drivers,' she added. Two recent enforcement operations were conducted on July 11 and 18. Acting on tip-offs from the public and the National Private Hire Vehicles Association (NPHVA ), LTA officers arrested 32 people at Changi Airport and Gardens by the Bay for providing illegal ride-hailing services. The vehicles involved were impounded . These unlicensed drivers offered rides within Singapore and cross-border services. Under the current legislation, drivers must have a valid Public Service Vehicle Licence ( PSVL ) to offer point-to-point transport services in Singapore, as well as for cross-border services. Offenders can be fined up to $3,000 , jailed up to six months, or both. Their vehicle can also be forfeited. Cross-border transport is restricted to Singapore- and Malaysian-registered taxis who have been approved by both countries' authorities. These taxis can pick up and drop off passengers only at designated locations . Besides the PSVL, Malaysian-registered taxis must also have an Asean Public Service Vehicle Permit. In a July 19 Facebook post, the LTA warned the public against using illegal ride-hailing services because the vehicles do not have the necessary insurance and pose safety risks. In addition, passengers who use such services may find their journeys affected during enforcement operations. LTA also highlighted how such services affect the livelihood of licensed drivers. Since 2022, the authorities have caught 104 drivers for using foreign-registered vehicles for cross-border trips without permission. LTA said that those who have been charged and convicted had been slapped with fines of up to $2,600 and vehicle forfeiture.
