Shilo Sanders talks Trump's post about his brother amid NFL Draft slide

President Donald Trump implored NFL owners to take a chance on Shedeur Sanders in the NFL Draft as the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback fell to the fifth round. Sanders was projected to go as early as No. 2 before his epic draft slide, which had the entire sports world talking and wondering why it happened. The Trump post on Truth Social was one of the more underrated parts of the weekend. Shilo Sanders, Shedeur's brother, was asked about the post in a recent podcast interview. "Man, I'm not even gonna lie, that was the coolest thing I've ever seen bro," he said on the "One Night with Steiny" podcast. "Fam, if you got the president tweeting, bro, you know something's wrong." Sanders called it a "W" for Trump. Trump made his voice heard on the Friday before Sanders was picked. "What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID? Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He's also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness," Trump wrote. "He should be "picked" IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!" White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested on the following Monday that Trump's post was influential. Shedeur Sanders will have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job against Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel. Shilo Sanders signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent. He could be depth for the Buccaneers in the secondary. Shedeur Sanders' brother responds to Donald Trump after president blasted NFL teams for not drafting him

It's not often that you see the President of the United States lobbying on behalf of an NFL Draft prospect. Yet, that's exactly what happened last week. After Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders - the son of Hall of Famer Deion Sanders - didn't get drafted in the first round, Donald Trump took to his Truth Social account and put all 32 NFL teams on blast for their decision to not select him. 'What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID?' Trump wrote in his Truth Social rant. 'Deion Sanders was a great college football player, and was even greater in the NFL. He's also a very good coach, streetwise and smart! 'Therefore, Shedeur, his quarterback son, has PHENOMENAL GENES, and is all set for Greatness. 'He should be 'picked' IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN. Good luck Shedeur, and say hello to your wonderful father!' Shedeur's brother Shilo - himself an NFL Draft hopeful out of Colorado - reflected on that moment in an appearance on the 'One Night with Steiny' podcast. — 1-1-1-1 (@pahrduve) May 1, 2025 That pick came after Donald Trump blasted NFL teams for not picking him in the first round 'Not gonna lie, that was the coolest thing I've ever seen bro,' Shilo said on the show. Referring to his brother's slide, Shilo said, 'If you got the president tweeting, bro, you know something's wrong.' Shedeur was considered by many NFL Draft analysts to be one of the top-two quarterback prospects in this year's class. However, he dropped all the way down to the fifth round when he was taken 144th overall by the Cleveland Browns. Trump's post came on Friday afternoon prior to the start of the second and third rounds of the NFL Draft. After falling out of the first round, many believed Shedeur would be taken on the second day. But that wasn't the case. Shedeur was the sixth quarterback selected in the draft - with players like Tyler Shough, Dillon Gabriel, and Jalen Milroe being taken ahead of him despite their rankings below Sanders in many prospect analyses. Bizarrely, the White House appeared to try and take some credit for Shedeur's eventual selection - even though it was four rounds later than many expected. When asked by Fox News' Peter Doocy if Trump believed he influenced Sanders' eventual selection, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt remarked, 'All I will say is, the president put out a statement and a few rounds later he was drafted. So, I think the facts speak for themselves on that one, Peter.' His later selection will likely cost Shedeur millions of dollars in potential early-career earnings. As for Shilo, the Colorado defensive back was hoping to hear his name called in the proceedings as well. But, he went undrafted. Two days after the draft concluded, Shilo agreed to a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent.
