One Piece Heroines anime announced as fans debate which spinoffs deserve adaptation next
A new anime adaptation, One Piece Heroines, has been announced, focusing on stories from the women of the One Piece universe. The news was revealed during the Egghead Saga Voice Actors Special Stage Event at One Piece Day 2025, alongside a first visual featuring Nami and Robin. Based on the light novels written by Jun Esaka and illustrated by Sayaka Suwa, the series adapts short stories first published in One Piece Magazine. The first novel follows Nami, Robin, Vivi, and Perona, while the second includes Hancock, Tashigi, Reiju, and Uta, ending with a conversation between Nami and Robin. Haruka Kamatani will direct the anime, with Takashi Kojima as character designer and Momoka Toyoda handling the script. The announcement has drawn mixed reactions among fans. Some are eager for the female-led stories to take centre stage, while others voiced preferences for different adaptations. On Reddit, one fan suggested, 'They should animate the Ace manga/novel. That would be so good with a proper studio behind it.' Another agreed, adding, 'The Law novel too,' and others mentioned titles like Shokugeki no Sanji. Several commenters expressed hope for more novel adaptations, including those centred on Ace, Law, and Zoro. However, many welcomed the Heroines project, with one noting excitement over the involvement of the writer of Fan Letter, and another praising the Perona chapter from the first volume. According to fans, the Heroines' stories are not necessarily canon, but some take place between key events in the main manga, offering 'slice of life' moments rather than action-heavy arcs. Netflix recently released the first look of the much-awaited Season 2 of the One Piece live-action series. While several fans are excited for the same, some are not fully convinced about the idea and wish for a different story treatment to it, Dexerto reported. The streaming service's series comes at a time when another adaptation is already under development: a One Piece Heroines anime, which will be focused around the female-fronted manga spin-off. One Piece is Getting a Woman-Focused Spinoff Anime

Alongside the first trailer for season 2 of the live-action Netflix One Piece series – and the announcement of a third season – were a huge amount of smaller announcements. These ranged from merchandising and magazine announcements to the reveal of a new One Piece opening theme for the anime. Shueisha But it also brought the announcement of a whole new sub-series, adapting one of the more unique aspects of the One Piece manga. During the presentation, it was announced that One Piece Heroines would be adapted into an anime series, with little more information than that revealed during the presentation beyond that every episode will "depict the charm of heroines" often not displayed in the main series. One Piece Heroines was a subseries of the One Piece manga that was initially released through the One Piece Magazine, a somewhat irregularly published "mook" magazine that features behind the scenes and additional information about the series. The magazine also features smaller chapters of stories, with One Piece Heroines being one of them. The Heroines subseries consists of eight chapters, each focused on a different woman in the One Piece universe. This includes women from the main cast of the Straw Hat Crew, like Nami and Robin, but also additional characters like Vivi, Boa Hancock, and Uta, the latter of whom was the leading antagonist in One Piece Film: Red. It's not currently known when One Piece Heroines will air, nor is known how many episodes it will be — although fans are expecting that it will last for eight episodes, one for each chapter in the series. Episodes are expected to be somewhat similar in scope to last year's One Piece: Fan Letter, which similarly drew from expanded manga released via One Piece Magazine. It's also not known if Heroines will be considered canon to the current anime series. The manga was arguably canon, taking place primarily during the series' time skip, so it's likely that many fans will consider these new episodes canon, too. One Piece Heroines will likely be available on Crunchyroll and Netflix in the US when it airs.
