Notices to 3.75 lakh property tax defaulters
The city's civic body will issue notices to 3.75 lakh property tax defaulters, chief civic commissioner M. Maheshwar Rao said on Monday. These defaulters have tax arrears totalling to around ₹700 crore - ₹800 crore, he said.
These defaulters will be served notices through SMS and emails shortly, Mr. Rao said. 'If property owners have already paid the tax, they can ignore these messages. But if they are defaulters and not paid the tax, they should pay it up immediately,' he said. He directed civic officials to take stern steps to recover tax dues from these defaulters.
These include property tax defaulters for 2024-25 and those who did not even make use of the One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme introduced by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in 2024, sources said.
BBMP had collected a whopping ₹4,930 crore in property tax in 2024-25, over 25% more than its previous year, owing to OTS. However, as of January, 2025, 2.06 lakh property owners were still defaulters and their arrears added to ₹329.15 crore.
Following this, BBMP attached over 81,000 properties in 2024-25, highest ever in the city, and listed hundreds of such properties for auction in February, 2025.
