Who's on the alternates list for the 2025 PGA Championship? These are the top hopefuls

Who's on the alternates list for the 2025 PGA Championship? These are the top hopefuls So close, yet so far away. Will their status change between now and Thursday's first round? No one really knows for sure but there's a short list of hopefuls on standby. We're talking about the alternate list for the 2025 PGA Championship, May 15-18, at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, host venue for the second men's major of 2025. When the field for 2025 was announced by the PGA of America on Tuesday, there were 154 names with two spots being reserved for the winners of the final two PGA Tour events concluded on the Sunday prior, the Truist Championship and the Oneflight Myrtle Beach Classic, if that winner wasn't already in the field. Sepp Straka, already in the PGA, won the Truist. Ryan Fox, not yet in the PGA, outlasted Mackenzie Hughes and Harry Higgs in a one-hole playoff to claim the Myrtle Beach win, and, the 155th spot in the PGA. Michael Thorbjornsen, third on the alternate list, got in the PGA when Vijay Singh withdrew a few hours before the two Sunday PGA Tour events concluded. That then left one spot for Victor Perez to get in. With Straka already in the field, the PGA of America could then go to the fourth name on the alternates list. Going forward, should any of those 156 withdraw before the first round starts on Thursday, the PGA of America continue going down the alternates list to backfill. PGA Championship 2025 alternate list These 10 names were on the original alternate list released last Tuesday, but first alternate Patrick Fishburn later received an official invite, while second alternate Rico Hoey got the call when Billy Horschel had to withdraw as he prepares for hip surgery. Here's who's next in line: Alex Smalley Vince Whaley Doug Ghim Matt Kuchar Carson Young David Lipsky

Carson Young rides eagle to 54-hole lead in Myrtle Beach Classic

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Carson Young holed a 30-yard flop shot for eagle on the par-5 15th and shot a 7-under 64 in rainy conditions Saturday to take the third-round lead in his home-state Oneflight Myrtle Beach Classic. Young, the 30-year-old former Clemson player from Anderson, South Carolina, had a 13-under 200 total at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. 'It's been cool to have family out here and a bunch of support with friends,' Young said. 'I hear a bunch of `Go Tigers!' out there. ... It's cool to be here in my home state playing golf. It kind of just feels like old times.' Harry Higgs was a stroke back after a 68. 'Thrilled to shoot under par.' Higgs said. 'I'm not great in the rain.' The winner of the PGA Tour event — held opposite a signature event at the Truist Championship this week — gets a spot in the PGA Championship if not already eligible. Winless on the PGA Tour, Young also birdied the par-5 13th and par-4 16th — playing a four-hole stretch in 4 under. 'Honestly, it was a lot of fun out there, even with the rain, just because I was making putts and making some chip shots,' Young said. 'Just played really solid golf. Nothing too flashy out there. But it was just really good golf.' Mackenzie Hughes had a 70 to drop two shots behind. The Canadian shot a 63 to take the first-round lead and had a 69 on Friday to maintain a share of the top spot. Victor Perez had a 66 to join Ryan Fox (68), Davis Shore (70), Norman Xiong (69) and Danny Walker (70) at 10 under.

PGA Tour insists new golf measures to speed up slowcoaches are working despite Davis Riley disqualification

Riley was punished for enabling the slop functionon his distance measuring device but Tour claims speed of play is increasing Positive golf chiefs have ignored the Davis Riley penalty to issue an encouraging bulletin on tests designed to speed up the slowcoaches. The PGA Tour are into the final week of experiment with distance-measuring devices which are being used at both the Truist Championship and Oneflight Myrtle Beach Classic in a bid to boost the pace of play. Unlucky Riley suffered a two-shot penalty at last week's CJ CUP Byron Nelson event as he accidentally used an outlawed slope function on his device. ‌ But, that incident aside, Gary Young, the PGA Tour's Chief of Rules and Competitions, said has given an upbeat update on the findings with rounds reported to be getting faster during the trial. He told Golfweek: 'We had that one unfortunate penalty with Davis Riley and, other than that, it's gone pretty well. ‌ 'I think the guys are taking ownership and realising they have got to make a change or something bad is going to come their way. They've heard all this talk about shot clocks and things that they don't feel having any place in the game.' Publishing lists to out the fairway slugs and publicly shame them is also on the agenda and Young added: 'What is eventually going to change their behaviour, it's going to be stuff like that. Every player thinks they're a fast player until you show them on paper. "The data's going to be important. When you sit down with them and you say: This is over thousands of golf shots. Look at your average. Stop trying to make excuses. Don't tell me about the volunteer you had at such and such. That's garbage. All that stuff's thrown out. 'When you're talking thousands of golf shots, you've got a problem, and you need to address it. When they hear that, and we're upfront with them on that, they need to change their behaviour. "You need to become more like the norm. I'm not asking you to be a fast player, but I do need you to be more like everyone else. You don't get more time to play than everyone else out here. That's what it boils down to.' You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Rangers and Celtic pages, and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. What are early returns on PGA Tour pace-of-play tests? Rules chief dishes on rangefinders

What are early returns on PGA Tour pace-of-play tests? Rules chief dishes on rangefinders FLOURTOWN, Pa. – The PGA Tour's Distance measuring device test is coming to an end. Pros have been allowed to use rangefinders at Tour events at six events over a four-week span beginning at the RBC Heritage last month and through the Truist Championship and Oneflight Myrtle Beach Classic this week. [Technically, pros have one more week since the PGA of America, which runs the PGA Championship next week at Quail Hollow Club, has permitted them for several years, but starting at the Charles Schwab Challenge the following week and for the remainder of the season they are back on the 'no-can-do list.'] Other than Davis Riley being dinged for misuse – he used the slope function, which isn't allowed – Gary Young, the PGA Tour's Chief of Rules and Competitions, said 'so far, so good,' on the test of new speed of play recommendations. 'We had that one unfortunate penalty last week with Davis Riley, and other than that, it's gone pretty well,' he said. It's a small sample size but enough Young hopes to get feedback from players and caddies and crunch the numbers to determine if the DMDs are making a difference in pace of play. Young noted that the pace has been improving since it became a hot topic during the West Coast Swing. He said the average time at the RBC Heritage was 3 hours 50 minutes at Harbour Town Golf Links, arguably the flattest and easiest walk on Tour and as little as 3 hours and 20 minutes for certain groups. [The 72-man signature event field was played in twosomes allowing for the faster pace.] 'I think the guys are taking ownership and realizing they have got to make a change or something bad is going to come their way. They've heard all this talk about shot clocks and things that they don't feel having any place in the game,' Young said. Announcing pace-of-play times is still a maybe The Tour also has stated publicly that publishing a list of pace-of-play times, which would publicly shame the slowest players, is under consideration. 'What is eventually going to change their behavior, it's going to be stuff like that,' Young said. 'Mark Russell (former chief of rules and competitions) used to say it all the time – every player thinks they're a fast player until you show them on paper. 'The data's going to be important. When you sit down with them, and you say, 'This is over thousands of golf shots. Look at your average. Stop trying to make excuses. Don't tell me about the volunteer you had at such and such that you think was [the reason you had a slow time].' That's garbage. All that stuff's thrown out. When you're talking thousands of golf shots, you've got a problem, and you need to address it. When they hear that – and we're upfront with them on that – they need to change their behavior. You need to become more like the norm. I'm not asking you to be a fast player, but I do need you to be more like everyone else. You don't get more time to play than everyone else out here. That's what it boils down to.' Distance-measuring devices are not the only testing going on DMDs isn't the only test underway. The Korn Ferry Tour is evaluating a second pace-of-play measure. Under the revised Pace of Play Policy, which is in place for the remainder of the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour season, the first offense of a 'bad time' will now result in a one-stroke penalty. Under the previous policy, a one-stroke penalty was not applied until a player received a second 'bad time.' 'The feedback I'm getting is that when they go out to warn a group, guys are afraid to get on the clock. Unless we stop the DMD period, we won't really have a chance to see which one of the two things that they're doing is resulting in the better place of play,' Young said. It's a process, but at last, the Tour is making real strides to shore up one of its timeless problems.
