Former Malaysian squash star Ong on transition from player to coach
CGTN 18 Apr 2025, 05:26 GMT+10 Former squash star Ong Beng Hee of Malaysia used to rank No. 7 in the world and won gold medal twice at the Asian Games. Having retired as a player in July 2015, he became a coach, first in his home Malaysia, then in the U.S. and now in China. In an interview with CGTN Sports Scene's Shen Xiang, Ong spoke about guiding up-and-coming talents in China, where interest in the discipline is growing rapidly. Before deciding to come to Beijing, Ong had been working with Team USA for three years. He revealed that he made the decision after seeing the potential of squash growing in the country. According to Ong, squash has been popular in his country since Malaysia hosted the Commonwealth Games in 1998. Meanwhile, sufficient funding, from both the government and private sector, contributed a lot to the development of the sport in the country. Squash has been included in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Ong said he had dreamed of playing at the Olympic Games. Though that dream didn't come true, he expected his players to do so in the future. Source: CGTN

Eain Yow joins Beng Hee, Azlan in squash's top 10 club
KUALA LUMPUR: Ng Eain Yow has made a major breakthrough by becoming the first Malaysian male squash player in 14 years to crack the world's top 10 on the PSA Tour. In the latest rankings released today (April 21), the reigning Asian champion climbed one spot to No. 10 — a career milestone for the 27-year-old. He is only the third Malaysian man to achieve a top-10 ranking, joining Ong Beng Hee, who reached No. 7 in December 2001 and Azlan Iskandar, who hit No. 10 in March 2011. Squash Racquets Association of Malaysia (SRAM) coaching director Andrew Cross hailed the achievement as a major step forward. "All the hard work he's been doing is paying off," said Cross. But Eain Yow isn't satisfied just yet. The ambitious star has set his sights on breaking into the top eight by the end of the year.
