Giant-killing streak ends for Yew Sin-Ee Yi in Japan Open
Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi won US$13,300 (RM56,500) as semi-finalists in the Japan Open. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The giant-killing streak of doubles shuttlers Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi in the Japan Open came to an end today when they were defeated by world No 3 pair Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae from South Korea. The Malaysians, ranked 27 rungs below the Koreans, lost 14-21, 15-21 in 38 minutes. Their defeat dashed hopes of an all-Malaysian final in the doubles event, in which defending champions and world No1 pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani will play against Taiwan's Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han in the other semi-final later today. Yew Sin-Ee Yi had started their campaign in Tokyo with a shock win over their world No 2 compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the first round. They then defeated US pair Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith before upstaging China's world No 6 duo Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang in the quarter-finals. However, they could not match their opponents' power and accuracy today, in their first encounter in an international meet. Still, they can walk with their heads held high as this was their first semi-final appearance at a World Tour Super 750 event. Yew Sin-Ee Yi won US$13,300 (RM56,500) as semi-finalists.

Ohori's 'lucky charm' run ends for husband Yew Sin in Japan Open
KUALA LUMPUR: Ong Yew Sin's fairytale run at the Japan Open — with new bride Aya Ohori cheering him on — came to a halt in the semi-finals on Saturday. Yew Sin and men's doubles partner Teo Ee Yi were stopped 21-14, 21-15 by South Korea's world No. 3 Kim Won Ho-Seo Seung Jae at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. It was a bittersweet end to what had been a dream week for Yew Sin — his first tournament since tying the knot with former Japanese star and world No. 7 Ohori in Melaka last month. With his wife watching from the stands, the world No. 30 rediscovered their spark to reach their first World Tour semi-final of the season after crashing out in the first round of seven consecutive events. But their inspired run came undone against the in-form Koreans, who were simply a class above on the day. The defeat also dashed hopes of an all-Malaysian final, with top seeds Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani taking on Taiwan's Liu Kuan Heng-Yan Po Han in the other semi-final.

Ohori's magic lifts husband Yew Sin at Japan Open
KUALA LUMPUR: Ong Yew Sin appears to be riding a wave of marital bliss, and the presence of his wife, former Japanese star Aya Ohori, is proving to be a lucky charm at the Japan Open. The 29-year-old, who tied the knot with Ohori last month, booked his place in the men's doubles quarter-finals with partner Teo Ee Yi after grinding out a 19-21, 21-14, 21-19 win over Americans Presley Smith-Chen Zhi Yi in Tokyo on Thursday. The victory at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium marks only their second quarter-final appearance on the World Tour this season. Ohori, a former world No. 7 who retired earlier this year, was in the stands cheering on her husband, and her support seems to be having the desired effect. World No. 30 Yew Sin-Ee Yi have struggled since reaching the semi-finals of the Malaysia Open in January. They suffered a dismal run of seven first-round exits in a row and looked set for another early exit in Tokyo. But the independent pair pulled off a massive upset in the opening round by stunning world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in straight games — a result that could revive their season. Now into the last eight of the Super 750 tournament, the Malaysians have already bettered their showing last year when they bowed out in the second round. However, they face a tough test next against China's world No. 6 Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang on Friday. Yew Sin will be hoping Ohori's magic continues, and perhaps impresses one very important spectator: her father, Hitoshi Ohori, the current Japan national head coach, who will no doubt be watching closely.
