Walmart's $20 Onn TV boxes from 2021 and 2023 are also getting their Android TV 14 update

Calvin Wankhede / Android Authority TL;DR Walmart's cheaper Onn 4K TV boxes are also reportedly receiving the Android TV 14 update. The update brings the March 2025 security patch and various bug fixes. This news comes shortly after the company's more expensive Onn 4K Pro device received Android TV 14. Walmart's $50 Onn 4K Pro device just received an update to Android TV 14, but what if you only have the cheaper Onn 4K Android TV boxes? Well, there's some great news for you. Reddit users have reported that Walmart's Onn 4K (non-Pro) TV boxes are also getting the Android TV 14 update. This doesn't just apply to the 2023 model, either. Owners of the 2021 model also report that their devices are getting the new software. That means the 2021 model has gone from Android TV 10 to Android TV 12 and now Android TV 14. In any event, the update weighs in at just under 1GB and apparently brings the March 2025 security patch as well. One Redditor also reports that the update fixed an AAC 5.1 audio bug, but there's no word on other additions and improvements. It's quite uncommon to see major system updates for older, budget-priced Android TV boxes, so we're glad to see Walmart and the ODM step up here. The 2021 version of the Onn 4K started at just $30, while the 2023 model came in at a mere $20. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . Walmart quietly released a new 4K Google TV box with Dolby Vision

Walmart has released a new version of its 4K Google TV box that could be an even better replacement for Google's now discontinued Chromecast line. The new $29.88 Onn 4K Plus Streaming Device is $10 more expensive than Walmart's $19.88 entry-level Onn 4K, but includes a feature from the pricier $49.88 Onn 4K Pro smart speaker we felt was missing from the cheaper $20 option: support for Dolby Vision HDR content. The new Onn 4K Plus also features a slightly faster processor than the Onn 4K Pro that launched a year ago — a Amlogic S905X5M quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz — but only has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, compared to the Pro model that offers 3GB and 32GB, respectively. The Onn 4K Plus also doesn't double as a smart speaker like Walmart's Pro model, and sacrifices features on its included voice-capable remote like backlighting and the ability to find the remote when it goes missing. But unlike the entry-level $20 Onn 4K box, the Plus' remote does include a customizable button that can be programmed to launch your favorite streaming app and a dedicated 'Free TV' button to quickly access Google's ad-supported FAST channels. The most tempting reason to choose Walmart's new Onn 4K Plus is that it connects to a power source via a USB-C port. The Pro model instead uses a barrel-style connector for attaching a power adapter, while the entry-level 4K model includes an ageing Micro USB port.

Walmart reveals the price for its Chromecast replacement, and it's a bargain

With the retirement of the Google Chromecast line last year, users who want an easy way to get streaming features on their non-smart TV have had to look elsewhere. Thankfully alternatives like the Onn 4K streaming device from Walmart have been available to meet that need, functioning as a worthy replacement for the Chromecast. Now, a product page on Walmart's website confirms that a new version of the streaming device, the Onn 4K Plus, is on its way. Spotted by 9to5Google, the listing reveals that the device will sell for just $30, which is $20 cheaper than the typical price of a 4K Chromecast, and like the Chromecast it has a small footprint and comes with a remote. Recommended Videos The newest version of the device will launch as a followup to the previous Onn 4K Pro from last year. The Onn 4K Pro got our recommendation ahead of the Google Chromecast thanks to its affordable price, functionality that covers all the essentials, and handy extras like the ability to find the remote (increasingly useful considering how remotes love to go off on expeditions of their own). Now, with the Chromecast line discontinued, the Onn 4K Plus will look like an even more appealing option — perfect for if you have an old TV without streaming functions but you aren't wanting to upgrade to a smart TV just yet. The details about the new Onn 4K Plus are fairly minimal right now, though the device will ship with 16 GB of storage and 2 GB of RAM. Walmart also says the product offers an updated Google TV OS and Google Assistant, with streaming support for at least YouTube, YouTube TV, Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+, and Prime Video. The device also supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, with a voice function for the remote control too. It's not yet known when the device will be available, but given that the product listing has just gone up, it likely won't be long until the launch date. The product might also be available in stores soon as well as online, so if you're in the market for a streaming device then you might want to check out your local Walmart store to see if they have the device in stock.
