Onslow Community Outreach shelter open to help those in need escape severe weather
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — Like many other areas of Eastern N.C., in Jacksonville Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2025, wintry weather impacted many people.
Some in the city will need a safe place to stay and Onslow Community Outreach is there to provide that.
'We open the doors for anyone who is unsheltered that is outside so they can come in out of the weather because it is very dangerous,' Onslow Community Outreach employee Jamie Lyttleton said. 'We don't want anyone to get sick or lose their lives or anything. We open up the doors so they can come in and get a warm cot, warm meal, take showers or whatever they need to do.'
The White Flag shelters could be open more nights this week. 'We are open tonight. Depending on the weather tomorrow, we look at it and watch it all day long just in case because weather changes like crazy,' Lyttleton said. 'We keep an eye on that and watch that, and if it is still in those conditions, we will open the doors up again. All they gotta do, is come to the doors and say we are here for white flag. We let them in and we are at 1210 Hargett Street, so as long as they can get here, we will let them in.'
