Ottawa high school vice-principal charged with sexual assault

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB) says a vice-principal at West Carleton Secondary School charged with sexual assault is not currently in the school. Jonathan Cappello was charged with sexual assault in May and is scheduled to appear in court on June 10. Cappello's profile on the Ontario College of Teachers website says Cappello was arrested and charged in the City of Ottawa on May 10, 'which is relevant to his membership in the College.' 'The OCDSB is fully cooperating with police through their investigation. The staff member is not currently in the workplace. We can confirm the charges are not related to the OCDSB community,' OCDSB spokesperson Diane Pernari said in an email. 'Due to the ongoing nature of this investigation, we are unable to provide further information at this time.' The Ottawa Police Service would not comment when contacted by CTV News Ottawa on Friday afternoon. 'As a practice, the Ottawa Police Service does not release information about named individuals. Charges laid are a matter of court record,' an Ottawa police spokesperson said in an email. Cappello was awarded a teaching certificate in 2005. Cappello is one of two vice-principals at West Carleton Secondary School and was still listed on the school's website Sunday afternoon. West Carleton Secondary School is located on Dunrobin Road and has Grades 9 to 12 classes. The Ontario College of Teachers Act requires members to report if they have been charged with an offence.

Elementary teacher accused of sexual assault placed on leave before criminal charges

The 44-year-old elementary school teacher arrested Wednesday on sexual assault and sexual interference charges was 'immediately' placed on administrative leave when allegations first surfaced, Hamilton's public school board says. According to police, 'several victims' came forward in April to report allegations of sexual assault that occurred at Rockton Elementary School and involved a teacher working there. Ryan Barrett now faces three counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference. The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board said Thursday 'we take these allegations very seriously and are fully co-operating' with police. 'When the allegations were reported, we worked expeditiously to support student safety and Ryan Barrett was immediately placed on administrative leave,' Jason Alexander, the board's chief executive officer of human resources, said in an emailed statement. It remains unclear how many victims have come forward. Hamilton police did not respond to questions Thursday. Under the Criminal Code, a charge of sexual interference specifically involves someone under the age of 16. The board wouldn't say when Barrett started working at the Highway 8 school. Barrett received his teaching licence in 2008, according to his Ontario College of Teachers profile, which still lists him as being in 'good standing.' A spokesperson for the college said they are aware of the allegations, but noted criminal charges against members are only added to profiles 'once official court documents are obtained.' 'By law, the college is unable to comment on any investigations or complaints,' the spokesperson said when asked if there will be an independent probe into the teacher's alleged conduct. Investigations by the college are separate from criminal proceedings. Barrett will remain on administrative leave until his case is resolved in court, according to the school board. The board said it's committed to maintaining 'a safe and respectful environment for all students and staff.' 'Our care and concern are with those affected by this situation, and we are committed to providing support to students, staff, and families of the Rockton Elementary School community during this challenging time.'

Hamilton elementary school teacher arrested on 3 sexual assault charges: police

Social Sharing A 44-year-old Hamilton teacher faces three counts of sexual assault as Hamilton police say they're investigating alleged incidents at Rockton Elementary School. Hamilton Police Service say they began investigating after several victims came forward to report a sexual assault that occurred at the Flamborough public school, the service said in a news release Wednesday evening. The 44-year-old Hamilton man was teaching at the school at the time, police said. Officers arrested him Wednesday and also charged him with three counts of sexual interference. A teacher by the same name as the accused is listed as a member of "good standing" by the Ontario College of Teachers. The regulatory board defines that as meaning a member who can teach in publicly funded schools, pending any conditions or limitations. Police ask anyone who might have information that could help investigators to reach out. "Hamilton Police want all survivors of sexual violence to know that we believe them and we will respect their choice when and how they report an incident," police said, adding offenders can be prosecuted well after the date of an offence.
