(File) A woman from Temiskaming Shores, Ont., has been fined $3,500 for animal welfare offences involving multiple animals. April Laffrenier was found guilty July 3 of offences under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) Act in the Ontario Court of Justice in the City of Temiskaming Shores. Laffrenier was found guilty of four counts of failure to comply with prescribed standards of care, one count of exposing animals to undue risk of distress, one count of failure to comply with an order and one count of permitting animals to be in distress. Banned from having animals She was fined $3,500 and is permanently prohibited from owning, having custody or care of, or residing with, any animals, the Ministry of the Attorney General said in a news release. Laffrenier was also ordered to surrender any animals she currently owns within 30 days of sentencing. 'A provincial animal welfare inspector, or an individual with equal authority, shall have the ability to conduct an investigation of the defendant's dwelling or other property owned or operated for the duration of the prohibition order,' the release said. The PAWS Act came into effect Jan. 1, 2020, making Ontario the first jurisdiction in Canada to implement a full provincial animal welfare enforcement system to enhance animal safety. Since then, more than 15,900 distress orders have been issued, more than 2,000 charges laid and 12,900 animals removed from 'situations of distress negatively impacting their welfare.'

Driver charged after fleeing from Toronto police, hitting parked cars

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Spencer Colby Toronto police have arrested a man after he hit several vehicles while attempting to flee from officers following a traffic stop. In a release, police said officers responded to reports of a person with a gun just before 1:30 a.m. in the area of King Street West and Portland Street on July 26. The suspect was driving a silver Volkswagen and allegedly pointed a gun at someone near the intersection, according to police. When officers found the vehicle, they ordered the driver to turn off the vehicle and step out, but they said he did not comply. Instead, police said the driver reversed the car and struck a scooter and a vehicle on the road, before turning into an alleyway and hitting another parked car. Officers followed the vehicle and were able to arrest the driver a short time later. Mrunmay Ukey, 27, of Toronto, was arrested and charged with fail to stop for police and dangerous operation. He is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in September.

Man charged for driving impaired, street racing on Hwy. 417 in Ottawa
An Ottawa driver was charged with multiple offences after losing control of his vehicle on Highway 417 over the weekend. (OPP/X) Ontario Provincial Police laid multiple charges against a 28-year-old man for allegedly racing and driving impaired on Highway 417 in Ottawa over the weekend. Police say officers were called about a crash on the highway near Innes Road shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses told police they had seen the driver racing another vehicle when he lost control of his car from failing to make the curve at the Highway 174 and 417 split, OPP said in a news release Monday. The driver was transported to hospital with minor injuries. Police say he had been allegedly consuming alcohol and registered more than twice the legal drinking limit. Officers allegedly also found alcohol and cannabis inside the vehicle. The man was arrested on two charges related to impaired driving, dangerous operation, racing and failing to properly wear a seatbelt. He had his driver's licence suspended for 90-days and received an automatic 30-day driving suspension. He is set to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Ottawa at a later date.
