MMEA Miri nabs two foreign vessels for alleged illegal fishing

The detained Vietnamese vessel. MIRI (May 31): The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has detained two foreign fishing vessels for attempting to carry out illegal fishing activities off Miri yesterday. The vessels, from Indonesia and Vietnam respectively, were detected approximately 38 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Suai and 31 nautical miles northwest of Kuala Niah. MMEA Miri director Capt Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the vessels were intercepted during Op Permai 01/2019, Op Naga Timur, and Op Tiris 3.0. 'The Indonesian vessel was detained at around 12pm, while the Vietnamese vessel was detected and detained at approximately 5.45pm following a public tip-off regarding its presence,' he said in a statement. During the attempt to intercept the Vietnamese vessel, the patrol crew encountered resistance as the foreign crew performed dangerous manoeuvres, putting the safety of the officers at risk. However, the situation was quickly brought under control, and the vessel was successfully detained without any injuries reported. A total of eight crew members, including two captains – five Indonesians and three Vietnamese aged between 25 and 53 – were taken into custody. All detainees were escorted to the Miri Vessel Detention Centre for further investigation. Mohd Khairol said the case is being investigated under the Fisheries Act 1985, which provides for fines of up to RM6 million for captains and RM600,000 for each crew member involved in fishing without a permit or trespassing in Malaysian waters. 'The MMEA remains committed to enforcing the law in Malaysia's maritime zones and will not compromise with any offenders,' he added. The public is urged to report any suspicious maritime activity or emergencies by contacting the Sarawak Maritime Operations Centre Miri at 085-649 111, the MMEA Sarawak office at 082-432544 or 082-432016, or via the emergency hotline 999. foreign fishing vessels miri MMEA

MMEA detains tugboat, barge believed to be operating illegally in Kuala Baram waters

MMEA photo shows five of the eight crew members detained. MIRI (May 6): A tugboat and barge believed to be operating illegally in Kuala Baram waters here were intercepted and detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) Miri Maritime Zone yesterday. MMEA Miri director Capt Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the two vessels were spotted in a suspicious situation at approximately 3.2 nautical miles southwest of Kuala Baram. They were then intercepted by a patrol team during an integrated operation under Op Permai 01/2019 and Op Tiris 3.0 around 12.30pm. The inspection found the crew members were not only transporting cargo that was not permitted, but also failed to produce any valid licensing documents. 'The tugboat was manned by eight crew members including the captain, of which four are Malaysians, two Myanmar nationals, and two Indonesians, aged between 23 and 49. All of them have been detained for further investigation,' Mohd Khairol said in a statement today. The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967 and the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 for offences related to carrying unauthorised cargo and failing to present a valid Domestic Shipping Licence. He emphasised that MMEA remains committed to intensifying patrols and enforcement to curb maritime crime and violations at sea. Members of the public can report any suspicious maritime activities to the Malaysian Maritime Miri Zone hotline on 085-649111, Sarawak State Maritime Office on 082-432544 or 082-432016, or the national emergency line 999 for immediate action. MMEA Miri director Captain (M) Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the vessel was stopped for inspection around 10.10am during Op Permai 01/2019 and Op Tiris 3.0 operations. 'The crew comprised three Malaysians and an Indian national aged between 24 and 76. 'Checks found they had failed to report a change of captain to the port authority, thereby violating the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952,' he said in a statement yesterday.
