Tanker, crew nabbed for breaching Merchant Shipping Ordinance
MIRI (May 4): A tanker vessel and its crew were detained by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) on Saturday for failing to report the change of captain.
MMEA Miri director Captain (M) Mohd Khairol Anuar Saad said the vessel was stopped for inspection around 10.10am during Op Permai 01/2019 and Op Tiris 3.0 operations.
'The crew comprised three Malaysians and an Indian national aged between 24 and 76.
'Checks found they had failed to report a change of captain to the port authority, thereby violating the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952,' he said in a statement yesterday.
Mohd Khairol said the vessel and crew were then escorted to the Miri Vessel Detention Centre for further action.
MMEA, he stressed, will continue to conduct patrols and surveillance to prevent any form of maritime crime and legal violations in Malaysian waters.
For any information, complaints or emergencies at sea, the public may contact the MMEA Miri operations centre on 085-649111, Sarawak MMEA on 082-432544 or 082-432016, or the 999 emergency hotline. crime detained foreign crew Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency

Good Samaritans beware: 'Never move accident victims lest it aggravate injuries; wait for ambulance'
DESPITE the frequent reports of many Malaysians' lack' of road etiquette, one thing that they cannot be faulted for is stopping to lend a helping hand to accident victim(s). However, this is not always a good idea as a post on X by MYNEWSHUB (@mynewshub) highlighted. A short clip shows an accident victim lying in a ditch with two motorcyclists having stepped in to try retrieve the victim. A passerby could be heard shouting not to move him as it could worsen his injuries. But the two riders were insistent they could not just leave him lying there and proceeded to move the victim with great difficulty (it might be added). The poster observed that although the two bikers might be well-intentioned, the lady was right in giving a scream that the duo should wait for the ambulance to arrive first. Let the professionals do their part was the clear PSA (public service announcement) by the self-proclaimed online news portal. — MYNEWSHUB (@mynewshub) August 10, 2025 One commenter concurred with the PSA by stating that the best thing was to ensure the victim was not in immediate danger and was as comfortable as possible. Unless the victim was conscious and requested for something, do not even attempt to remove his helmet was the sound advice here. Another commenter counselled against being 'overly clever without prior knowledge of the correct medical procedure'. He reiterated not to move the accident victim or even attempt to straighten the bodies and limbs of accident victims. Likewise, refrain from giving water without knowing the internal condition of the victim nor urging them to sleep. Just call an ambulance and suffice to keep the victim calm. There was a real danger of spinal injury which could be the result of moving the victim, cautioned one commenter. The stubbornness of the two well-intentioned bikers was also criticised as their action could worsen the accident victim's injury or even be fatal. Few commenters contended that the incident highlighted the need for basic first aid to be taught in schools. Some commenters could not help point out the two bikers were not only stubborn but ignorant, equating them to Mat Rempit . One commenter though couldn't help but bring race into equation by comparing the level of knowledge between the two Malay bikers and the Chinese lady who gave the pertinent advice of not to move the accident victim. This reminder is certainly timely and well-intentioned considering that one wrong move in lifting the accident victim out of the ditch may only worsen his injury or be life-threatening to him. Motorists and good Samaritans should pay heed to this video clip. – Aug 14, 2025

Zara's family lawyers propose charges if evidence is strong
Published on: Thursday, August 14, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 14, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Lawyers representing the family of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir have suggested that the Attorney-General's Chambers charge those identified in the police investigation for allegedly bullying the teenager, if the evidence can be upheld in court. The legal team – Shahlan Jufri, Rizwandean M Borhan, Mohd Luqman Syazwan Zabidi, Mohd Syarulnizam Mohd Salleh and Farrah Nasser – said that if the evidence allows charges under Section 507D(2) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum 10-year jail term, fine, or both, there would be no need for an inquest. They added that if the evidence is insufficient, police should continue investigations and hold an inquest concurrently, with prosecution to follow once the case is stronger. The lawyers also dismissed an online 'plot twist' suggesting their client caused Zara's death, calling it false and malicious, and thanked the CID Director Datuk M Kumar, Bukit Aman, and the Special Task Force for their swift action. They expressed appreciation to Malaysians for their prayers and support, and urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims and to share any information with the police or approach them directly. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? RM1.12b lost to online scams in six months, NSRC steps up 24
KUALA LUMPUR — Financial losses from online scams amounted to RM1.12 billion between January and June this year. According to a written reply published on the Parliament website, the Home Ministry (KDN) said that to curb such crimes, the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC), in operation since October 12, 2022, has been strengthened as a one-stop centre and has been operating round the clock since July 1. This allows victims to lodge reports directly via the 997 hotline without having to go to a police station. 'After nearly three years of administrative operation, the Prime Minister, while chairing a special meeting of the National Cyber Security Committee (JKSN), agreed that the NSRC should be placed under the purview of the Home Ministry and led by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM),' the reply stated. The response was to a question from R. Yuneswaran (PH–Segamat), who asked about the total financial losses suffered by Malaysians due to online scams up to July this year. KDN added that other measures to curb scams include international cooperation, proposals to amend the Penal Code to address cybercrime cases, and the Semakmule 2.0 portal initiative to help the public check the status of bank accounts, phone numbers and companies potentially involved in fraudulent activities. — BERNAMA
