Good Samaritans beware: 'Never move accident victims lest it aggravate injuries; wait for ambulance'

Focus Malaysia20 hours ago
DESPITE the frequent reports of many Malaysians' lack' of road etiquette, one thing that they cannot be faulted for is stopping to lend a helping hand to accident victim(s).
However, this is not always a good idea as a post on X by MYNEWSHUB (@mynewshub) highlighted. A short clip shows an accident victim lying in a ditch with two motorcyclists having stepped in to try retrieve the victim.
A passerby could be heard shouting not to move him as it could worsen his injuries. But the two riders were insistent they could not just leave him lying there and proceeded to move the victim with great difficulty (it might be added).
The poster observed that although the two bikers might be well-intentioned, the lady was right in giving a scream that the duo should wait for the ambulance to arrive first.
Let the professionals do their part was the clear PSA (public service announcement) by the self-proclaimed online news portal.

One commenter concurred with the PSA by stating that the best thing was to ensure the victim was not in immediate danger and was as comfortable as possible.
Unless the victim was conscious and requested for something, do not even attempt to remove his helmet was the sound advice here.
Another commenter counselled against being 'overly clever without prior knowledge of the correct medical procedure'.
He reiterated not to move the accident victim or even attempt to straighten the bodies and limbs of accident victims.
Likewise, refrain from giving water without knowing the internal condition of the victim nor urging them to sleep. Just call an ambulance and suffice to keep the victim calm.
There was a real danger of spinal injury which could be the result of moving the victim, cautioned one commenter.
The stubbornness of the two well-intentioned bikers was also criticised as their action could worsen the accident victim's injury or even be fatal.
Few commenters contended that the incident highlighted the need for basic first aid to be taught in schools.
Some commenters could not help point out the two bikers were not only stubborn but ignorant, equating them to Mat Rempit .
One commenter though couldn't help but bring race into equation by comparing the level of knowledge between the two Malay bikers and the Chinese lady who gave the pertinent advice of not to move the accident victim.
This reminder is certainly timely and well-intentioned considering that one wrong move in lifting the accident victim out of the ditch may only worsen his injury or be life-threatening to him.
Motorists and good Samaritans should pay heed to this video clip. – Aug 14, 2025

Immigration union condemns assault on KLIA officer by Chinese national, calls it attack on Malaysian sovereignty

The union said such acts are tantamount to challenging the sovereignty of Malaysian law, and tourists must respect the laws of the countries they visit. 'Immigration officers are the frontline defenders of the nation's sovereignty,' its president Ajeet Singh said in a statement here. 'Assaulting them while on duty is not only an uncivilised act, but also tarnishes the nation's image and jeopardises security at international entry points.' KPISM said the incident occurred at around 7.40am when a foreign passenger verbally abused, pulled the officer's headscarf, and pushed her head, causing minor injuries. 'KPISM stresses that any act of provocation or injury against public servants is subject to legal action, regardless of whether the perpetrator is a Malaysian citizen or a foreign national,' he said. It also urged the ministry to review a proposal to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) at every counter for more comprehensive monitoring of immigration processes. KPISM, which said the officer is a union member, called on the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) management to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of both immigration officers and travellers. It demanded the investigation be expedited and prosecution carried out without compromise against the perpetrator. It said the union will provide welfare and legal assistance to the officer until the justice process is completed. Yesterday, the AKPS said a Chinese national was arrested after allegedly acting aggressively and injuring an Immigration counter officer during a departure inspection at the KLIA Terminal 1. In the 7.40 pm incident, the woman, who was with a man and two children, approached the counter for immigration departure inspection when the officer on duty found that they had no records of entry into Malaysia, and referred the matter to the supervisor for further checks. — Malay Mail Immigration Services Union of Peninsular Malaysia KLIA Terminal 1 lead

Rafizi's son assault turned many Malaysians into Sherlock Holmes but cops likely hot on their heels

THE brutality of assaulting 12-year-old Benjamin Rafizi with syringe injection has traumatised the entire nation to the extent that some Malaysians have – whether consciously or unconsciously – showcased their hidden Sherlock Holmes talent in a rather reckless manner. This is especially so among opposition-slant netizens who took to the social media to insinuate that the power that be may have a hand in the attempt to silence Ben's dad and former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli from pursuing certain hot issues. A case in point is this viral post which might seem 'innocent' at first but somehow trigger the furore of Madani government backers to the extent that it was forwarded to the police, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for farther action. 'Rafizi spent 15 years attacking Najib/UMNO. Never had his family in jeopardy,' penned St Cstz (@stcatz95). 'Two months of criticising Anwar (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) openly, got his son attacked.' The backlash was intense with one commenter claiming that the poster purposely wanted to create the perception that PMX masterminded the attack. 'Please investigate @fahmi_fadzil, @MCMC_RASMI. @PDRMsia. This is a big accusation …' Red flag Another red-flagged post is that by a good governance advocate who reacted to The Sun's report of PMX's condemning the 'malicious' attack on Rafizi's son 'No need to pretend to condemn, Nuor oi. Playing dirty is part of your play book,' claimed Perisai Waja (@PerisaiPejuang). 'In the past, you've instructed the police' to shock' witnesses. You aren't above using violence against those who oppose you. Scummy leader.' The post incurred the wrath of one commenter who forwarded it to the police, MCMC and Fahmi in addition to PMX himself and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. 'This Mahathir macai (slang for 'lackey') @PerisaiPejuang seems to have information about yesterday's attacks and threats,' rebutted on commenter. 'Please take a statement from him👍' Another post that brooders slander and can be perceived as defamatory is that by a self-proclaimed tech-savvy political observer. 'Rafizi's press conference pretty much confirmed our suspicion. Malaysia has turned into El Salvador,' claimed Pemikir Malaysia (@pemikirmsia). 'The people rose up to overthrow the mafia there. Malaysians can do the same. Little wonder that Madani backers were quick to hurl brickbats at the poster. At the end of the day, keeping one's emotions in check or be safe rather than sorry should be the call of the day instead of throwing caution to the wind in the pursuit of clickbait lest 'the patrol car may come a-calling'. – Aug 15, 2025 Main image credit: Sinar Daily

Trump says he hopes to 'save' Hong Kong democrat Jimmy Lai

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would see what he could do to help "save" detained Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai, even though Chinese President Xi Jinping would not be "thrilled." "I'm going to do everything I can to save him," Trump told Fox News Radio in an interview. "We'll see what we can do ... we're going to do everything we can." Lai, 77, has pleaded not guilty to charges under Hong Kong's national security law of conspiracy to collude with foreign forces, as well as to a separate charge of conspiracy to publish seditious material. He has been held in solitary confinement for more than 1,500 days since December 2020. Liu Pengyu, the spokesperson for China's embassy in Washington, said Lai had been "a key orchestrator and participant in anti-China, destabilising activities in Hong Kong." "We strongly oppose external forces using judicial cases as a pretext to interfere in China's internal affairs or to smear and undermine Hong Kong's rule of law," he said. Trump has said he would raise Lai's case as part of negotiations with China over trade and tariffs. On Monday, the US and China extended a tariff truce for another 90 days, staving off triple-digit duties on each other's goods. On Tuesday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said trade officials from the two sides will meet again within the next two or three months to discuss the future of the economic relationship.
