Rafizi's son assault turned many Malaysians into Sherlock Holmes but cops likely hot on their heels

Focus Malaysia16 hours ago
THE brutality of assaulting 12-year-old Benjamin Rafizi with syringe injection has traumatised the entire nation to the extent that some Malaysians have – whether consciously or unconsciously – showcased their hidden Sherlock Holmes talent in a rather reckless manner.
This is especially so among opposition-slant netizens who took to the social media to insinuate that the power that be may have a hand in the attempt to silence Ben's dad and former economy minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli from pursuing certain hot issues.
A case in point is this viral post which might seem 'innocent' at first but somehow trigger the furore of Madani government backers to the extent that it was forwarded to the police, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) for farther action.
'Rafizi spent 15 years attacking Najib/UMNO. Never had his family in jeopardy,' penned St Cstz (@stcatz95). 'Two months of criticising Anwar (Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) openly, got his son attacked.'
The backlash was intense with one commenter claiming that the poster purposely wanted to create the perception that PMX masterminded the attack.
'Please investigate @fahmi_fadzil, @MCMC_RASMI. @PDRMsia. This is a big accusation …'
Red flag
Another red-flagged post is that by a good governance advocate who reacted to The Sun's report of PMX's condemning the 'malicious' attack on Rafizi's son
'No need to pretend to condemn, Nuor oi. Playing dirty is part of your play book,' claimed Perisai Waja (@PerisaiPejuang).
'In the past, you've instructed the police' to shock' witnesses. You aren't above using violence against those who oppose you. Scummy leader.'
The post incurred the wrath of one commenter who forwarded it to the police, MCMC and Fahmi in addition to PMX himself and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
'This Mahathir macai (slang for 'lackey') @PerisaiPejuang seems to have information about yesterday's attacks and threats,' rebutted on commenter. 'Please take a statement from him👍'
Another post that brooders slander and can be perceived as defamatory is that by a self-proclaimed tech-savvy political observer.
'Rafizi's press conference pretty much confirmed our suspicion. Malaysia has turned into El Salvador,' claimed Pemikir Malaysia (@pemikirmsia). 'The people rose up to overthrow the mafia there. Malaysians can do the same.
Little wonder that Madani backers were quick to hurl brickbats at the poster.
At the end of the day, keeping one's emotions in check or be safe rather than sorry should be the call of the day instead of throwing caution to the wind in the pursuit of clickbait lest 'the patrol car may come a-calling'. – Aug 15, 2025

Military service scheme upgrade to attract more diploma holders

KUALA LUMPUR: Improvements to the armed forces service scheme are set to attract more diploma holders by offering higher starting salaries and enhancing the overall quality of its personnel. Armed forces chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar said the Public Service Department (PSD) will detail the new entry qualifications and starting salary adjustments in an official implementation letter, which will take effect from Jan 1, 2026. "Out of the 21 proposed entry qualifications, seven have been approved. "We are grateful to the prime minister for the Madani government's commitment to enhancing the quality of public service," Mohd Nizam told Bernama yesterday. During the 20th edition of the Majlis Amanat Perdana Perkhidmatan Awam (MAPPA XX), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also announced the expansion of the entry qualifications for enlisted members of the armed forces at Grade Z1 (special duties) to include the Medical Corps, Religious Corps, and Engineering Corps. The performance-based incentives (BIP) will be extended to other ranks, namely Sergeant Equivalent (Grade Z4) and Staff Sergeant Equivalent (Grade Z5), while the qualifying period for BIP has been reduced from six years to four years, benefiting 3,789 personnel with an estimated financial implication of RM6.47 million annually. On the BIP, Mohd Nizam said the incentive will be given as a monthly allowance, equivalent to one Annual Salary Increment (KGT) for the rank held. "This extension benefits armed forces personnel by considering the shorter service period (21 years) and limited promotion opportunities," he said. Mohd Nizam highlighted that three proposed improvements to the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA) for the armed forces remain under review. These include the reclassification of armed forces grades and the alignment of Jusa C grades for Brigadier General-equivalent ranks based on length of service. "The review also involves strengthening the criteria for allowance grants, revising eligibility conditions, and extending career development initiatives for armed forces personnel," he added.

Malaysian tourists with burn injuries face long recovery, mounting expenses

BANGKOK: The families of two Malaysian tourists set ablaze here on August 7 fear their medical expenses could exceed insurance coverage. Gan Kin In, 80, said he and his wife, Kek Ley Lan, expressed gratitude to the Malaysian and Thai governments, along with other relevant agencies, for their assistance following the incident involving their daughter and her boyfriend. "We have been in Bangkok for the past week. "The Malaysian government, through the embassy, has given us constant support, while the Thai side, through the Tourist Police and the Tourism and Sports Ministry, has provided transportation and accommodation," he told Bernama on Friday. The two Malaysians, Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and her boyfriend Ong Yik Leong, 26, were attacked by an unemployed man who allegedly doused them with thinner before setting them alight near a shopping mall on Ratchadamri Road at about 10 pm on Aug 7. However, Kin In said they were worried about the medical expenses, which had already reached around 150,000 baht after just over a week of treatment at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. He said the Thai government had agreed to provide total compensation of up to 550,000 baht per person. "We are worried that the total amount of compensation may not be enough to cover the total medical costs here, as the charges are quite high," he said. Kin In, a retiree, said that doctors were not optimistic about allowing the victims to be transferred back to Malaysia anytime soon. "Yesterday (on Thursday), Xiao Zhen had a fever and high blood pressure, but she has recovered today. "Her condition is now more stable, and if her health permits, doctors will carry out minor skin operations in phases," he said. In the latest update on Xiao Zhen's condition, Kin In said doctors estimated it would take around two months for her to recover after the skin graft procedures, which would need to be done in stages to minimise pain and discomfort. Meanwhile, Yik Leong, who is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Police General Hospital, is also reported to be in a stable condition and is being cared for by his aunt, Ong Siew Kien. – Bernama

Court to hear MCMC's contempt bid against Telegram on Sept 24

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission obtained an interim injunction order against Telegram from the Kuala Lumpur High Court on July 13. KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court here will hear the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's application to initiate contempt proceedings against Telegram on Sept 24. Justice Mahazan Mat Taib fixed the date after Daniel Bock, the lawyer representing Telegram, informed the court they needed 14 days to file a reply. Both MCMC, represented by lawyer SN Nair, and Telegram were ordered to file their submissions by Sept 19. The court also set Sept 11 to deliver its decision on MCMC's separate bid for a full injunction against Telegram. The contempt bid, filed yesterday, alleges that the messaging platform failed to comply with one of the terms of an ex parte injunction granted on July 17. On June 19, MCMC announced it had sued Telegram and two of its channels – Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas – for allegedly spreading harmful content that could erode trust in public institutions and threaten social order. Edisi Siasat and Edisi Khas are anonymous channels known for publishing whistleblower-style allegations, particularly targeting public institutions and enforcement agencies. Despite being unofficial, their posts often gain traction and trigger public debates.
