OpenAI unveils GPT‑5. Here's what to know about the latest version of the AI-powered chatbot.
A new version of ChatGPT has arrived that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman promises will have Ph.D-level smarts. OpenAI on Thursday announced the release of GPT‑5, which it calls its "smartest, fastest and most useful model yet." The artificial intelligence company that brought the world ChatGPT says its latest version of the AI-powered chatbot will be more accurate, have fewer hallucinations and offer more articulate writing capabilities for composing emails and reports, for example. GPT-5 will also excel at coding and answering health-related questions, the company said in a blog post. A basic version of the new model is available for free, with paid options for higher usage also available. On a call with reporters Wednesday previewing the new chatbot, Altman likened GPT-5 to a Ph.D.-level expert. The new chatbot is also "the biggest single step forward" that OpenAI has taken in worldwide accessibility, Altman said. The announcement marks the next step in AI development for OpenAI, which launched the first iteration of GPT in 2022. The technology quickly captured the fascination of the tech industry and the public for its ability to generate human-like responses to questions and requests. The service now has over 700 million weekly users, according to the company. Read on to learn more about the latest version of ChatGPT. GPT-5 will offer more accurate responses in a shorter timeframe than previous models, executives said during a press call on Wednesday. "You really get the best of both worlds," Nick Turley, head of product at ChatGPT, told reporters on the call. "You have it reason when it needs to reason, but you don't have to wait as long." According to a blog released Thursday by OpenAI, GPT‑5's responses are approximately 45% less likely to contain a factual error than GPT‑4o, and approximately 80% less likely to contain a factual error than OpenAI o3. As part of the new model, OpenAI is also reigning in ChatGPT's flattery. In its blog post, the company said GPT‑5 is "less effusively agreeable" and that it will use "fewer unnecessary emojis." OpenAI has also stepped up ChatGPT's coding abilities, allowing users to build websites, apps and games from scratch. In a demo during Wednesday's call, Altman used GPT-5 to create a web app in less than 5 minutes. Altman called the new chatbot's ability to write code on demand its "superpower," adding that the advancement would have been "unimaginable at any previous point in history." Asked about how the technology might impact the livelihood of human programmers, Altman said he thought the technology would actually create more job opportunities for as demand for software rises. According to OpenAI, the new model will also be better at answering health-related questions, flagging potential concerns and helping users understand test results from their doctor. The company noted, however, that the technology "does not replace a medical professional." Users around the world will be able to access GPT-5 for free, according to OpenAI. Asked about the commercial rationale behind offering a free global model, Turley said the company's mission is to ensure AI benefits all humanity. "Giving everyone access to this capability is a very concrete way for us to live and breathe that mission," he said. In addition to the free version, OpenAI will also offer a variety of paid options based on usage limits. The subscription models include:

OpenAI fixes 'unintentional chart crime' after people pointed out something was off in the GPT-5 livestream
OpenAI charted the wrong course with their graphs on Thursday. Several charts featured in its GPT-5 livestream included mistakes. Sam Altman called it a "mega chart screwup," and OpenAI apologized for "unintentional chart crime." While most people were glued to OpenAI's newest AI model, GPT-5, during a demo Thursday, some couldn't help notice something had gone awry in the background. Several charts included in OpenAI's GPT-5 livestream on Thursday had some clear mistakes. One chart compared the models GPT-5 with thinking and OpenAI o3 on a metric called "coding deception." The former model has a deception rate of 50%, but this bar was less than half the size of the bar for o3, which has a smaller deception rate of 47.4%. Another chart comparing models on a different metric depicted 69.1% and 30.8% with the same size bar. A bar for 52.8% was also larger than both of these, though that's smaller than 69.1%. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman tweeted, "wow a mega chart screwup from us earlier." A marketing employee for OpenAI tweeted that the issue had been fixed in the blog post of the announcement, apologizing for the "unintentional chart crime." Tech demos aren't immune to the occasional flub. When Microsoft unveiled Bing's AI chatbot in 2023, it made several mistakes during its demo. When asked for pros and cons of a particular vacuum, it listed noisiness and a short cord as cons, but the vacuum is cordless. In an ad that same month, Google's AI chatbot Bard, which has since been renamed Gemini, gave an incorrect answer to a question about the James Webb Space Telescope. It's unclear if AI was used to make the charts, and OpenAI didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. Read the original article on Business Insider

OpenAI unveils Chat GPT-5 model with 'Ph.D level intelligence'
OpenAI has unveiled its latest and most advanced update for its ChatGPT chatbot yet. The new model, known as GPT-5, is more useful and intuitive than its prior versions, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said during a livestream on Thursday, Aug. 7. Altman compared the intelligence of its previous GPT-3 model to a promising high school student, its GPT-4 model to a smarter college student and GPT-5 to a "legitimate Ph.D level expert in any area." "GPT-5 can write an entire computer program from scratch," he said. "This is an incredible super power on demand that would've been unimaginable in any previous time in history." The update comes as the AI service gains popularity with over 700 million people using it per week, Altman added. The company said the new model still has limitations relating to persistent memory, autonomy and adaptability across tasks, NBC News reported. USA TODAY has reached out to OpenAI for comment. GPT-5 release date GPT-5 was released to the public on Thursday, Aug. 7, with a livestream on its social media channels and website. GPT-5 pricing Anyone can access ChatGPT for free; however, usage limits are determined by if a visitor is a subscriber. Plus subscribers get unlimited access while Pro subscribers receive access to GPT‑5 Pro, a version with extended reasoning for even more comprehensive and accurate answers, the company said. The Plus subscription is $20 a month, while Pro costs $200. For a breakdown of what each subscription offers, click here. How to use Chat GPT-5 To use ChatGPT, including the GPT-5 upgrade, users can ask the chatbot questions to answer or prompt it to carry out tasks. Altman pointed to tasks such as creating party invitations, ordering supplies and explaining health care in the live stream. ChatGPT users will now have the option to select a custom color for their chats and choose from a variety of pre-set personalities, like Cynic, Robot, Listener, and Nerd. Pro users will be able to connect their Gmail, Google Contacts, and Google Calendar to ChatGPT, with other tiers gaining access at a later, unspecified date, according to Wired. All you need to know about the new ChatGPT update
ChatGPT has received its first major update in years with the release of GPT-5 by OpenAI. The new GPT-5 model is available to all 700 million ChatGPT users and includes upgrades such as integrating different models and improved performance in areas like software writing, health, and finance. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, described GPT-5 as akin to a 'PhD-level expert,' particularly highlighting its ability to generate instantaneous software. While early reviewers found GPT-5 impressive for coding and problem-solving, they noted that the improvement from GPT-4 was not as significant as previous generational leaps. OpenAI is particularly emphasising GPT-5's application in businesses, with Microsoft also planning to integrate the system across its products.
