Open Door Mission turning offices into rooms ahead of ramped-up winter weather
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — With our winter weather expected to ramp up this weekend, shelters in our area are also preparing. The Open Door Mission told News 8 more about their efforts to help the unhoused community in the days ahead. In what's referred to as Code Blue months, shelters like Open Door will expand their capacity. That's already taken place this season, but directors say they will turn no one away in need of a warm place to stay. CEO Anna Valeria said Monroe County has upped their response in preparation of this weekend with continuous outreach calls. When demand increases at Open Door, they have to make adjustments to increase capacity. They've gone from about 100 beds to 150 during the last few months. Regularly making accommodations where they can. 'The county has outreach teams going out various agencies have outreach teams going out. We're also getting a lot of calls in general lately. These snowstorms happen and we get more people but we're already so full as it is,' Valeria said. 'As our practice is, we're not turning anyone away. We're not running out of beds. We have cots, and when we run out of cots, we have chairs. We've been converting offices into bedrooms. We're doing what we can to make sure no one has to be in the cold.' Open Door Mission continues to rely on community donations to keep operations running smoothly — that includes monetary donations, and essential winter items – coats, boots, gloves, hats – etc. They accept donations in person at North Plymouth Ave. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
