Open Mike Eagle is the king of heartfelt, surrealist rap
The rapper Open Mike Eagle knows how to start from scratch. After a run of unimpeachable, cerebral albums in the 2010s and bubbling momentum, Eagle experienced a catastrophic year in 2019.
The problems began with the cancellation of 'The New Negroes,' his short-lived variety show on Comedy Central, but they came to a head when Eagle (a.k.a. Michael W. Eagle II) and his wife of 14 years divorced. He has coped by relentlessly releasing music and keeping up a robust touring schedule, but somehow he thinks he hasn't been pushing hard enough.
