Llangollen to mark VE Day anniversary with two-day event

The town hall will be lit up in red, white, and blue as the grand finale of the celebrations, which have been organised by the town council. The festivities will begin on Bank Holiday Monday, May 5, at 9.30am with the raising of the flag in the Centenary Square, accompanied by the town crier's proclamation. A free event will be held in the town hall, featuring performances by local groups such as the Llangollen Silver Band, The Melodics Choir, dancers, and solo singers. Wartime archive video and photographs will be shown on a big screen throughout the day, while schoolchildren from Bryn Collen and Y Gwernant will create VE Day decorations for the hall. Local organisations such as the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, Dementia Friends, Friends of Llangollen Health Centre, Llangollen Food Share, and the local branch of the Royal British Legion will have stands, with donations accepted. Complimentary teas, coffees, and cakes will be served throughout the day. The event will conclude with a performance by North Wales Opera, who are currently rehearsing in the town hall for their Opera Cavalleria Rusticana. The group's Eve Callahan will sing a VE-Day song. The celebrations will continue on Thursday, May 8, the actual anniversary of VE Day. At 6.30pm, church bells will ring out, and the Royal British Legion will lead a short commemoration in the Town Square. The mayor will then light up the town hall in red, white, and blue.
