JCC makes reading fun with Literacy Day

VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Jewish Community Center is celebrating the joys of reading and inspiring children to pick up a good book. The JCC is hosting its 14th Annual Literacy Day on Wednesday. The free, family-friendly event highlights the importance of reading through games and interactive activities. This year's theme is Fairytales and Fables. There will be nearly 20 vendors hosting different stations, including dress up, pretend play, arts and crafts, and a dance party. Literacy Day Chair and JCC Board Member Rachel Priest says each child will leave with a free age-appropriate book. 'They get to pick any book they want from our supply of free books. We have them by age range of the kid, and they get to take home, hopefully, a book that they haven't read before and find a new and exciting story,' said Priest. The books were all donated by community members and organizations. Literacy Day also serves as an opportunity for the JCC to show off the services it offers. Chief Operating Officer Raychel Reilly says the JCC is committed to instilling a love of learning in its students from a very young age. 'We internally promote literacy and a love of learning and a love of books. So, having this big excitement around Literacy Day helps, I think, foster that love of learning and books,' said Reilly. Literacy Day will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It is open to all who wish to attend. TCO's annual Opera and Beer event returning this week

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A fan favorite event that celebrates an unlikely pairing is returning this week. Tri-Cities Opera is once again hosting Opera and Beer. This year's event will be held at Factory by Beer Tree in Johnson City. Guests will be able to enjoy dinner and craft beer as they hear from high-class talent. Musical selections are from popular operas and musicals. There will be drinking songs as well. General Director John Rozzoni says the event is perfect for people who are opera-curious because it strips away the formalities of the art, making it less intimidating. 'At TCO, we believe that opera is for everyone. I think a lot of people who are not as familiar with the art form, the entertainment form, think of a certain thing that's hundreds of years old, in a foreign language, big, extravagant. And yes, that's part of what opera is, but opera is also very much a living and breathing art form,' said Rozzoni. Rozzoni says the show is immersive, meaning performers will be drinking and cheers-ing along with the audience. Opera and Beer will take place on Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6. Tickets are $30 and include one free drink coupon.
