Perhilitan seizes RM500k worth of exotic skin products in Cheras raid

KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities have seized more than RM500,000 worth of handbags and belts made from exotic animal skins, including crocodile leather, during a raid on a business premises in Cheras yesterday. Three locals were detained for questioning in connection with the illegal sale of various items crafted from protected wildlife skins. A source said the activity was uncovered after enforcement officers from the Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan), together with intelligence officers from the 19th Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF) Central Brigade, carried out a raid under Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah at about 11.40am. "The team discovered the business was selling various products made from the skins of protected wild animals," the source said. The raid resulted in the seizure of 86 handbags and 14 belts believed to be made from exotic animal skins. The suspects were released on police bail, while all confiscated items were taken to Perhilitan's headquarters for further investigation. Authorities reminded the public that the trade of wildlife-based products without valid authorisation is a serious offence under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716), and strict action will be taken without compromise.

Judge Saiful Bahari Adzmi meted out the sentence against Denis Bobegi Septa after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 37(1) of the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998, punishable under Section 29(1)(c) and read together with Section 37(2)(a) of the same law. Denis committed the offence at a stall in Serikin Market, Bau at around 2.30pm on July 11, 2025. Based on the facts of the case, a team of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) and Marine Police officers conducted Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah at the premises following intelligence reports. During the raid, the team arrested Denis after discovering 600 marine turtle eggs at the stall. Two-hundred eggs were packed in two plastic bags inside a box, while 400 eggs were inside four bags in another box. All 600 eggs were seized after Denis failed to present any valid permit or licence from the Controller of Wild Life. The turtle eggs were of the Chelonidae species, a totally protected animal as specified in Part 1 of the First Schedule in the Wild Life Protection Ordinance 1998. Couple held for selling over 800 protected birds in house of worship

KUALA LUMPUR: A husband and wife were found illegally keeping and selling more than 800 protected wild birds within a place of worship. The couple were arrested after they were caught selling Scaly-breasted Munias (locally known as Ciak Tempua) for RM25 each. Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) Peninsular Malaysia director-general Datuk Abdul Kadir Abu Hashim said the operation was uncovered through Operasi Bersepadu Khazanah (OBK), led by Perhilitan's Wildlife Crime Unit (WCU) with support from the General Operations Force of the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM). The raid, led by WCU officer Celescoriano Razond, was conducted at a stall located within the compound of a house of worship in Petaling Jaya at 8.50am yesterday. "A local man in his 40s and his wife in her 50s, who were at the location, were detained and questioned. "Checks uncovered 854 Scaly-breasted Munias, which are classified as protected wildlife species in Malaysia. "Also seized were 10 dead birds. All the birds were kept in 16 metal cages of various sizes," he said. Kadir said the birds, estimated to be worth RM30,000, were seized and sent to the Sungai Tengi Wildlife Conservation Centre in Selangor for further action. "The suspects were detained for investigation before being released on police bail of RM10,000 with one surety," he added.
