Maharashtra to give basic military training to students from Class 1

In a first-of-its-kind move, Maharashtra will begin providing basic military training to school students starting from Class 1, state school education minister Dada Bhuse announced on Monday. The initiative aims to foster patriotism, discipline, and physical fitness amongst children from an early to Bhuse, retired army personnel will take charge of training the students, alongside support from school sports teachers, NCC (National Cadet Corps) officials, and Scouts and Guides units. 'This decision has been taken to instil love for the country and encourage daily habits like physical exercise and disciplined living, which will greatly benefit students in the long run,' he proposal has reportedly received a favourable response from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. To ensure wide implementation, the government plans to involve over 2.5 lakh ex-servicemen across the state. This announcement comes in the backdrop of escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 and India's retaliatory strikes under 'Operation Sindoor' on May 7 targeting terror bases in Pakistan and country also witnessed a series of nationwide civil defence exercises recently. Under 'Operation Abhyas' on May 7 and 'Operation Shield' on May 31, mock drills were conducted in several border states to prepare civilians and authorities for potential emergency scenarios. These drills involved rehearsing responses to a range of simulated threats, underscoring India's increased focus on national military training plan for students aligns with this broader strategy of preparedness and resilience at both national and grassroots levels.(With PTI inputs) Must Watch

Civil defence drills or mock drills are being conducted again across several states in India, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Jammu and Kashmir under 'Operation Shield', days after a similar nationwide exercise took place on May 7. Mock drills aim to test India's readiness for emergency situations such as air raids, blackouts, and evacuations. Based on the home ministry's directive, to enhance emergency preparedness amid ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, mock drills have been restarted in several states in India from May 31. Check details The initiative, named Operation Shield, was supposed to be launched on May 29, but had to be cancelled due to administrative reasons. The exercises are intended to simulate several emergency situations in the interest of national security, especially in states bordering Pakistan. Mock drills had been previously held in several states on May 7, following the Pahalgam terror attack which claimed the lives of 26 civilians. Check timings, other details The mock drills are being conducted in light of officials identifying critical gaps in civil defence preparedness in vulnerable regions post the Pahalgam terror attack and heightened conflict with Pakistan. The drills will include sirens, blackouts, and emergency scenarios designed to test the readiness of local authorities and citizens in case of attacks or disasters. Also Read: Op Shield: Punjab all set for mock drills today Punjab's special director general of police, Sanjeev Kalra, told ANI news agency that the exercise would involve all districts starting at 6 pm. In Haryana and Rajasthan, drills are expected to begin at 5 pm. In Haryana, a total of 32,000 volunteers will take part in the drill across the state. Chief secretary of the revenue department (Gujarat), Jayanti Ravi, said that during the mock drill, young volunteers from the NCC, NSS, Bharat Scout and Guide will carry out various actions such as setting up a hotline between the Air Force and the Civil Security Control Room regarding enemy aircraft and missile attacks. During this time air raid sirens may be activated as well. Sanjeev Kalra added that fire services and representatives of the armed forces will also be involved in the exercise. On May 7, a nationwide mock drill exercise - 'Operation Abhyas' - was held in India, which came hours after Indian military strikes on Pakistani and PoK terror targets under 'Operation Sindoor'.

Vijayawada: Following the central government's guidelines, the district administrations conducted civil defence mock drills at Visakhapatnam, Anantapur and Nandyal cities on Wednesday. The security forces gave demonstrations to alert the public and be aware of how to respond in case of unexpected terrorist attacks. Civil defence, fire services, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force(NDRF), police, GVMC, revenue, civil supplies, medical department and several volunteers participated in the operation 'Operation Abhyas' held at two different venues in One Town Area- Ranibommacentre and Queen Mary Girls' High School in Visakhapatnam. Earlier, the Fire department personnel conducted the exercise at two apartment buildings in Ranibommacentre in a situation where militants attacked them with smoke bombs.

(HT Photo) This drill at the DC office was organised due to a previous fire incident in the office of the District Disaster Management Authority while mock drill for airstrike was held in Sanjauli. Deputy commissioner Anupam Kashyap said that the mock drill was organised on time. All the stakeholders who participated in this drill played an excellent role. Members of civil defence were also a part of this drill. He said that the main objective of this drill is to strengthen civil defense. 'There are 210 volunteers with civil defence in Shimla and a drive is already on for enrollment,' said DC. Superintendent of police Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi said, 'The drill was organised at the district level. In future, we are all ready for rescue operation in case of disaster. More and more people will be encouraged to join civil defence. Apart from this, the communication system will be strengthened in case of disaster. At the same time, siren system will be installed at designated places.' After the mock drill in Shimla city, feedback was taken from the officers.

Visakhapatnam: The sirens of fire engines screeched to a halt as the rescue teams' stepped out of the vehi-cles to carry out rescue operations as part of the mock drill. With a primary objective to strengthen emergency response framework and assess the readiness of people in the advent of a wartime or crisis situation, 'Operation Abhyas' was carried out in Visakhapatnam which was designated as category II city for the exercise. In Visakhapatnam, the civil defence mock drill was carried out in different locations, includ-ing Andhra University College of Engineering and One Town Area. The exercise was conducted to make people be prepared in case of any emergency situation by cooperating with each other. Personnel from the Navy, Army Coast Guard, revenue, among other wings, chipped in for the exercise. As part of the simulated hostile attack scenario, some of the victims were carried over the shoulders by the rescue teams, a few others were shifted to an ambulance. With perfect coordination of police, civil agents, navy, NDRF and SDRF, the mock drills were carried out in an effective manner. In line with the Central government's guidelines, the district administration conducted a civil defence mock drill at several places in Visakhapatnam city. The security forces gave demonstrations to alert the public and be aware of how to respond in case of unexpected terrorist attacks. The rescue teams saved the trapped people. Later, SDRF teams conducted a special mock drill at Queen Mary Girls' High School to prepare the students and the public. They gave demonstrations on how to rescue students and teachers stuck in classrooms and how they have to respond during such emergency situations. They explained to the people how to respond when the alarm rings and how to reach a safe zone. They showed how to save themselves from the top of the buildings with the help of ropes. During the mock drill, the SDRF officials made the people aware of the use of the equipment in the special vehicle and how to escape from the spot. SDRF IG Rajakumari, District Collec-tor MN Harendhira Prasad, Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi, Joint Collector K Mayur Ashok supervised the exercise. The security forces alerted the people on how to re-spond if the power supply gets interrupted and attacks are launched. Speaking on the occasion, District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad informed that in the next few days, civil mock drills will be conducted in all ward secretariats in the city and the peo-ple will be alerted against terror attacks. Earlier, a mock drill was also conducted at Andhra University College of Engineering in co-ordination with NCC cadets and NRDC team. The Waltair Division of East Coast Railway conducted a civil defence mock drill as per the directive of the Union Home Ministry. The exercise was held at the Divisional Railway Man-ager's Office under the supervision of Senior Divisional Safety Officer MK Sahoo, with active participation from a team of civil defence volunteers and other stakeholders. The mock drill simulated a hostile attack scenario to assess emergency preparedness and enhance coordination among various departments and agencies. Activities included blackout procedures, evacuation to designated safe zones, shutdown of non-essential lighting, and comprehensive rescue operations. Meanwhile, Jana Jagrana Samiti hailed 'Operation Sindoor' by holding the national flags at RK Beach near Victory at Sea. Samiti city convener Ch Sunil Kumar appealed to the Union government to continue the operation until all the militants were killed.
