Hyderabad tops metro cities in traffic speed at 25 kmph; city police, google join hands for signal optimisation under ‘Operation Green Light'

HYDERABAD: The city's average traffic speed of 25 kmph is the highest among major metropolitan cities in India, Hyderabad commissioner of police CV Anand said on Friday. He was speaking at the 'Traffic Action Plan' meeting held at the Telangana Integrated Command and Control Centre, Banjara Hills. "Despite the city adding nearly 1,600 new vehicles to the roads every day, we aim to improve the average speed to 27 kmph," Anand said. "Currently, about 91 lakh vehicles ply on Hyderabad roads daily, which shows a 45% surge since the Covid pandemic. The key to managing this growing volume lies in effective signal management," he added. At the event, Hyderabad city police also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Google to implement Operation Green Light, a collaborative initiative aimed at optimising traffic signals. "Every time someone uses Google Maps for navigation, data is generated about traffic flow and congestion," a senior police official explained. "With this MoU, we will use that real-time data to manage signal timings better. This will not only help reduce waiting time at signals but also cut down on greenhouse gas emissions," he said. Officials said the system will also help monitor sudden incidents or route deviations, allowing quicker alerts and responses by the traffic police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Visste du at du enkelt kan forbedre levetiden? He also lauded the role of transgender assistants deployed at traffic signals, a govt initiative introduced in Dec 2024. Anand assured that the police are also preparing for the upcoming monsoon season with appropriate precautionary measures.

From high stress to headstands: Hyderabad techies quit corporate jobs to become yoga teachers; here's what they say

HYDERABAD: Even as corporate India grapples with whether to work 70 hours a week or not, many young professionals in Hyderabad are making a mid-career shift and becoming full-time yoga instructors. If it means a pay cut, so be it. Those 15-hour workdays packed with PowerPoint presentations, deadlines and unending meetings have finally got to them. TOI spoke to many techies who have swapped high-pressure jobs for the calm, flexible life of full-time yoga. Mrudula Neelam, 31, was a techie with a major corporate and spent nearly four years buried in spreadsheets and regulatory frameworks at a multinational firm. "My body just couldn't take the 14-15 hour work days any more," she says. "I was constantly sick and stressed. The turning point came during 'Wellness Fridays' at her workplace, where she began teaching yoga to colleagues. Already certified, she started taking it more seriously. A scholarship for an Ashtanga immersion course in Bali sealed the deal. "It all shifted from being a weekend side hustle to a full-time career for me." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo Mrudula now runs classes from her online studio, teaches in-person sessions, and even travels to retreats and workshops in other cities. Why was the CR 475 overpass closed over I-75 Monday morning?

WILDWOOD — A highway overpass is undergoing repairs because of a collision that gridlocked traffic on Monday morning, March 17. County Road 475 is one of the most scenic two-lane highways running north and south through Marion and Sumter counties, past farms and horse ranches. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a dump truck driver inadvertently left the bed in a raised position while passing under the CR-475 overpass, and the truck bed struck the overpass. Why would that happen? A raised dump truck bed increases the height and center of gravity of the vehicle, and uneven terrain or an improperly aligned truck can cause the vehicle to tip over, according to the National Safety Council (NSC). That's what happened in the northbound lanes of I-75 in Sumter County at 1:20 a.m. A 56-year-old Ocala man was driving northbound on I-75 near the 333.5 milepost, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The bed of his dump truck sheared off and became lodged under the overpass while the truck itself continued a few hundred feet to its final rest just north of the impact point. No injuries were reported by the driver. Florida Department of Transportation engineers arrived to inspect the overpass, and the highway was cleared at around 8:15 a.m. The FHP told the Daily Commercial that the dump truck driver was charged with careless driving. Motorists detoured using U.S. 301 to County Road 484 to drive east-west. Also in the news: Behind on paying fines? Get help through Lake County's Operation Green Light "We don't have a timeline for the repairs yet," a spokesperson for FDOT told the Daily Commercial. "The repairs will be designed, then constructed, and that process typically takes weeks or months depending on the extent of the damage. In the meantime, it's safe to use the overpass, and both lanes are open. The shoulder is closed at this time." Florida is among the three states with the most serious truck accidents, according to the National Safety Council (NSC). Dump truck accidents are not uncommon in Florida because they can cause both primary and secondary accidents. In January, a woman was killed in a head-on crash involving a dump truck in Lake County, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. The crash happened at the intersection of County Road 439 and County Road 44A. A dump truck driver, a Leesburg man, 28, was not injured, but the 23-year-old Altoona woman driving the Toyota was transported to Waterman Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. "Despite the massive size and weight, dump trucks are used to make repeated trips between construction sites, suppliers and waste drop-off points," a spokesperson at Ansara Law Group explained in a 2021 report. "Repeated trips increase the potential for collisions. Drivers are often under significant pressure to get the job done, leading to dangerous actions behind the wheel, including speed, distraction, and aggressive driving." Northeast Florida's Clerk of Courts helping people get back on the road with Operation Green Light

The Northeast Florida's Clerk of Courts is helping those with suspended driver's licenses to get back on the road, and save some money in the process, with Operation Green Light. During the money-saving event, Clerk of Court offices will waive certain fees for residents with unpaid tickets or outstanding court fees looking to reinstate their driver's licenses. The Clerk of Courts says their Northeast Florida offices will come together for two weeks to, " help drivers save money, to reduce their financial stress, and to get those drivers back on the road with a legal driver license.' In a statement, the Clerk of Courts says, 'Operation Green Light efforts last year in Northeast Florida represented nearly 800 cases paid in full, which is a true win-win for all involved. Better yet, the full payment of these cases during that event resulted in more than 730 people whose driver license was made eligible for reinstatement at a lower cost, benefiting communities across the First Coast.' The office adds that they have the same goal this year. Operation Green Light will happen from March 31 through April 4 and from April 7 to April 11 from 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. at the Clerk of Court offices in Baker, Clay, Duval, Flagler, Nassau, Putnam, St. Johns counties. If you have unpaid tickets or court fees, you can contact the Clerk of Court office in the respective county for more information and to receive an advanced estimate on your reduced total amount due. You can find more information on the event here.
