The Wire says website unblocked after portal removed article
The Wire news portal said that unblocking orders were issued for its website shortly after it reached out to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting about the censorship of its website, it said in a statement on Saturday (May 10, 2025). As a precondition for removing the site, the site said that the government urged it to take down an article it had put out based on reporting by the U.S. publication CNN. While the site has taken the article down, it noted that the original CNN story remained available, and said it would challenge the decision. The website's blocking had drawn condemnation from multiple journalistic bodies, including the Press Club of India, DIGIPUB Foundation, and the Editors' Guild of India. Follow the Operation Sindoor LIVE updates here 'I am constrained to note that under the IT Act, the procedure your ministry should have followed was to first issue notice about the news story in question, then give The Wire a chance to present its views before the inter departmental committee and only then, in the event that the IDC insists on the story's deletion, could you have taken the extreme step of blocking our website if we remained non-compliant,' the site's founding editor Siddharth Varadarajan wrote to the government. The committee Mr. Varadarajan was referring to is set up by the government, led by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, to adjudicate on blocking orders. I fail to see why the government wants our story deleted and treated it as such a matter of emergency more than 24 hours after publication that no notice was even served to us and our entire website blocked,' Mr. Varadarajan said in his letter. 'Shortly after we sent this reply, MIB officials informed us that orders had been issued to Internet Service Providers to unblock the site,' Mr. Varadarajan said. 'However, despite the fact that more than 12 hours have passed since then, readers on various networks in different parts of the country are still unable to access The Wire's website.' Most modern websites use a Secure Socket Layer, indicated with https in their web addresses, to prevent interception of their traffic. This technique makes the specific content under a website any individual user is viewing inaccessible, and by extension, unblockable. However, full websites can be blocked instead of individual pages.

Govt directs CISF to check cargo, in-line baggage in view of enhanced security measures
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Saturday (May 10, 2025) said it has extended an additional security cover to temporarily supervise cargo operations and in-line hold baggage screening system at 69 civil airports of the country under its counter-terrorist cover. A spokesperson for the paramilitary force said the move has been initiated following a directive issued by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) on May 9, "temporarily" extending CISF's cover to these processes in "direct response" to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent security scenario in the country. This new arrangement will be in place till May 18, the spokesperson said. The CISF is usually only entrusted to frisk passengers and their cabin baggage. The cargo and In-line Hold Baggage Screening System (ILHBSS) checking was done by private security staff engaged by the airlines and airport operators. Follow the Operation Sindoor LIVE updates "The enhancement of CISF's mandate is essential to reinforce security arrangements at all civil airports," the spokesperson said. He added that the CISF has responded immediately and resumed "oversight" over cargo and baggage operations. The CISF will also "oversee" operations and the security staff of airport operators for ILHBSS, he said. The directives also authorise CISF personnel to perform random checks and oversee access control to these "critical" facilities (airports), the spokesperson added. All the airports under cover of the CISF have "already implemented" the new strengthened system, he said. Prior to this directive, CISF's deployment as the primary aviation security force did not explicitly extend to the direct security and screening of cargo operations and the ILHBSS, officials explained. The decision aims to introduce a crucial secondary layer of security checks to enhance aviation security, he said.

Air sirens sounded in Chandigarh; residents advised to remain indoors amid escalating tension
Air raid sirens were sounded in the Union Territory – Chandigarh on Friday (May 9, 2025) morning (around 9:30 am), following an air warning received from the Air Force station surrounding a possible aerial attack. Follow the Operation Sindoor LIVE The sirens were sounded across the city as a precautionary measure, and all were advised to remain indoors and away from balconies, according to a message issued by the Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh. A blackout was observed in Chandigarh on Thursday (May 8, 2025) night and several districts of Punjab, including Pathankot, Amritsar, Jalandhar, Rupnagar, Fazilka, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, according to officials. In Jalandhar, some drones were spotted that neutralised at around 11.20 p.m. by security forces, as per official sources. The States of Punjab and Haryana and Union Territory, Chandigarh, continued to be on alert mode in the wake of India's action against terror emanating from Pakistan. On Thursday (May 8, 2025), leaves of government personnel in government departments including police and health were cancelled and personnel were asked to be geared up round-the-clock. Punjab government has ordered that all Schools, Colleges, and Universities — Government, Private, and aided — across the entire Punjab shall remain completely closed for the next three days. The decision has been taken in view of the evolving situation, said Punjab Education Minister Harjot Bains on Thursday (May 8, 2025) night.
