GUC to start their, ‘Operation Spring Clean' program Sunday
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) — The Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) will begin their annual, 'Operation Spring Clean' program soon.
Starting April 13, GUC will work on cleaning about half of the 722 miles of water distribution lines to ensure that customers receive clean water. Some fire hydrants will be opened and allowed to flow freely for a short amount of time.
Cleanings will happen from Sunday, April 13, to Friday, June 6, and will only be done from 10pm to 6am to mitigate inconvenience to customers. Different zones will be cleaned each week and customers will be called the Friday before and the day of cleaning for reminders.
'Water service will not be interrupted because of Operation Spring Clean; however, we advise customers to avoid using water (if possible) when their lines are being cleaned. Although there is no health risk, the cleaning process involves flushing the pipes with high velocities of water. As a result, water may be discolored for a short period of time. GUC advises customers to avoid washing clothes until the water is clear.' said David Springer, GUC's Director of Water Resources.
If anyone experiences discolored water or other issues, GUC recommends that they run cold water for 5-10 minutes until it's clear. Customers can also call GUC at 252-551-1551 for more information about the Operation Spring Clean program or schedule.
