KUCHING (May 27): The General Operations Force (GOF) Sarawak Brigade seized contraband alcohol and cigarettes during three separate operations here and in Serian on May 22. GOF Sarawak deputy commander ACP Rosdi Inai said the biggest haul was during Ops Taring Alpha conducted by GOF Battalion 11 Kuching at a premises believed to be a storage facility for contraband alcohol and cigarettes. The raiding team seized contraband cigarettes, alcohol, and two vans, totalling RM4.02 million, he said. 'There were 4,881 cartons of cigarettes and 7,599.68 litres of alcohol found in the premises during the raid. 'Six local men and a foreigner, aged between 27 to 46, were also apprehended. Two vans were also confiscated,' he said in a statement today. The seized items and suspects were handed over to the Kuching District police headquarters for further action and investigation under Section 135(1)(D) of the Customs Act 1967, Road Transport Act 1987, Regulation 25 (1)(N) of the National Registration Regulations 1990, and Section 15 (1)(C) of the Immigration Act 1963. Rosdi said on the same day, operations were also conducted in two separate locations in Serian involving GOF Battalion 23 Sri Aman Intelligence Branch at 1.30pm and 2.30pm. At the first premises, the raiding team seized contraband alcohol and cigarettes worth RM1.046 million as well as apprehended three men aged between 20 and 39. At the second premises, he said the team seized contraband cigarettes and alcohol amounting to RM 1.25 million, and arrested another three men aged 18 to 22. 'Seized items and arrested suspects were handed over to Serian District police headquarters for further action and investigation under Section 135(1)(D) of Customs Act 1967, Section 2(1) and Section 3(1) of the Local Authority Act 1961,' he said. GOF Sarawak seizes RM6.09 mln in contraband in nine operations statewide

The seized contraband cigarettes and liquor in Miri. KUCHING (May 13): The General Operations Force (GOF) Sarawak Brigade successfully seized various types of illicit goods comprising cigarettes, alcohol, diesel and more in nine separate operations conducted between May 5 and 11, estimated to be worth RM6.09 million. In a statement today, Sarawak GOF Brigade deputy commander ACP Rosdi Inai said the biggest haul was made during Ops Taring Alpha, carried out on May 7 at 10.45am by the Intelligence Branch of GOF Miri Battalion 12. He said the operation involved a raid on a premises in Miri, which was suspected to be used as a storage facility for cigarettes and liquor that had not received customs clearance. 'The raid led to the discovery of 7,400 white cigarette cartons and 3,160 'kretek' cigarettes of various brands, as well as 201 cartons of liquor – all of which estimated to be worth RM3.09 million, based on market value. 'Two local men aged 26-29 and a 28-year-old foreigner were also arrested during the raid. 'The seized items were handed over to the Miri district police headquarters (IPD) for further action,' he said, adding the case is being investigated under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, Section 56(1)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 39(b) of the Immigration Act 1959/63,' he said. Meanwhile, the second largest case was reported in Kuching, involving a raid on a premises on May 11 at 5.59pm, suspected of being used as a storage facility for contraband cigarettes. A truck full of LPG gas cylinders and misappropriated subsidised diesel and petrol confiscated in Debak. 'During the raid, we detained a local man aged 25. Further investigation on the premises had led to the discovery of 2,848 cartons of white cigarettes of various brands estimated to be worth around RM1 million. Rosdi added the seized items and suspect were handed over to IPD Kuching for further action and investigation under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967. The GOF then proceeded to raid seven other premises throughout Sarawak, resulting in an estimated RM2 million in confiscated illicit goods. Meanwhile, throughout the Op Taring period as of May 12, GOF Sarawak has seized a total of RM234 million, and arrested a total of 277 individuals (205 locals and 72 foreigners), and seized 174 vehicles.

A GOF personnel questions the van driver after he was caught with 3,400 cartons of white cigarettes in Bau. – Sarawak GOF photo KUCHING (April 24): The General Operations Force's (GOF) continued crackdown on smuggling activities along the Sarawak-Kalimantan border has resulted in six major successes involving seizures totalling an estimated RM3.5 million. Sarawak GOF commander SAC Dr Che Ghazali Che Awang said Ops Taring Alpha and Ops Taring Awas/Batas operations conducted from April 21-23 saw several arrests and seizure of various contraband goods. The seized goods included untaxed cigarettes, red onions, large onions, frozen food products, frozen meat, and air rifles—all smuggled via unregulated routes along the border. 'The operations were the result of close collaboration between intelligence units, infantry battalions, and other enforcement agencies. 'This effort reflects the ongoing commitment of the Sarawak GOF in tackling cross-border smuggling that threatens national security and stability, while also protecting the local economy from the influx of illegal goods,' he said in a statement today. He said the first case involved the seizure of 3,400 cartons of white cigarettes of various brands and a van in Bau, valued at a total of RM1.77 million, with a 58-year-old local man detained to assist in investigations. The second case saw three local men aged between 42 and 48 detained at the Lundu border with 900 sacks of large onions hidden in three lorries, with total seizures valued at RM961,500. 'The third and fourth cases, also in Bau, saw two men arrested with 800 boxes of frozen food products worth RM427,800, and another man arrested with 400 sacks of red onions valued at RM360,500,' he said. For the fifth case, Che Ghazali said it involved the seizure of 60 boxes of frozen meat worth RM48,000 in Tebedu, while the sixth case saw a cache of air rifles and ammunition worth an estimated RM18,300 seized in Serian. The cases have been handed over to the respective police stations for further investigations under the Customs Act 1967, Control of Supplies Act 1961, Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999, and Arms Act 1960. Che Ghazali also informed that from Jan 1 this year up until today, Ops Taring operations conducted by the Sarawak GOF has recorded 108 cases, involving the arrest of 187 locals and 69 foreigners, and RM219 million worth of seizures including 152 vehicles.
