Forget OLED TVs — this ultra short throw projector can hit 4,000 lumens at 120 inches
(Image credit: Optoma) Optoma's bringing a new UST (Ultra Short Throw) projector to the market, one that's built for serious entertainment and gaming. Coined the GT4000UHD projector, Optoma's newest design can beam an image at 4,000 lumens at a screen size of up to 120 inches. To get a comparable TV in that range, you'd have to shell out a hefty penny, and few offer such an easy setup like this small projector. Even so, you'll still have to pay a premium for this new entry among the best projectors, setting you back a measly $4,000. You may like One of the brightest projectors at a price (Image credit: Optoma) Optoma is taking on the likes of Xgimi and Epson with a new UST projector designed to be every bit the best entertainment experience as much as a gaming powerhouse. Optoma claims the new GT4000UHD measures at a 500,000:1 contrast ratio and can hit 4,000 ANSI lumens of brightness. That's incredible control, equal to the Epson LS800, which remains one of the brightest projectors we've ever tested. You'll still want to scoop up an accompanying ALR screen to get the best possible performance out of the GT4000UHD, but it should be able to handle ambient lighting quite well. It can also hit a screen size of 120 inches at a distance of 12 inches from the wall. While that's not quite as good as something like the new Hisense L9Q, it's a promising addition that could give bigger TV screens a run for their money. It's also kitted out with some serious gaming chops, like a 4.3ms response time at a 240Hz refresh rate and 8ms at 120Hz in 1080p, ideal primarily for those running some of the best gaming PCs. Optoma also claims it has a 16ms input latency at 60Hz for 4K gaming, which should be good coverage for gamers on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but would be even better if it had VRR compatibility. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Despite its gaming prowess, the uphill battle facing the GT4000UHD is that TVs are getting bigger and, at the same time, much cheaper. Take a quick gander down the list of best 85-inch TVs and you'll see plenty of affordable options, like the Hisense U7N Mini-LED TV that's just over $1,200. Meanwhile, the GT4000UHD comes in at a whopping $4,499. That's more than some of the best OLED TVs cost, and it's not even counting the ALR screen you'd most likely need for ample performance. It's a tough sell, even with it offering an over 100-inch screen size. More from Tom's Guide

Optoma Unveils New Ultra Short Throw 4K Laser Home Theater And Gaming Projector
Optoma has taken the wraps off its latest home entertainment projector, complete with features that look destined to appeal as much to gamers as movie fans. The first thing that stands out about the new GT4000UHD, though, is its compact design. The way the light from its laser lighting engine emerges from a deep slit in the projector's top edge immediately marks it out as an Ultra Short Throw design that you can place on a sideboard just inches from your wall or screen. In fact, Optoma claims the GT4000UHD can produce a 100-inch image from a throw distance of just 12 inches, rising to a maximum image size of 120 inches if you can move the projector back a further inch or two. The Optoma GT4000UHD claims to deliver 4000 lumens of light, 100-inch pictures from a 12-inch throw ... More distance, and gaming lag as low as 4.3ms Photo: Optoma The GT4000UHD's most eye-catching picture specification is a claimed maximum brightness of 4000 lumens. This joins with its UST design to underline its potential as a living room projector capable of operating in at least some ambient light, rather than requiring a blacked out room to work effectively like many regular projectors do. Despite its unusually high brightness, the GT4000UHD also claims an impressive-sounding 700,000:1 contrast ratio. This isn't a native contrast ratio, depending as it does on dynamic light output systems designed to continually adapt the projector's brightness to the needs of the incoming images. Even so, it's a figure that raises hopes of more genuine contrast with real world images than we might usually expect to see from such a bright UST projector. The laser lighting system delivering these extreme picture claims also features Optoma's so-called DuraCore technology, which extends the projector's claimed lifespan to as much as 30,000 hours if you run the projector in its Eco preset. That's around six times the life of a typical lamp in a non-laser projector. The Eco mode is also claimed to get the projector's running noise down to 29db – an impressively low figure for such a bright projector. Though I should add that if you're planning to take advantage of the GT4000UHD's high dynamic range support, with its expanded light range, you will likely not want to run the projector in its Eco mode. The GT4000UHD's gaming appeal lies in its ability to deliver both extremely high frame rates and extremely low levels of input lag. Optoma claims its new projector can handle up to 240Hz refresh rates at 1080p resolution, at which frame rate the time it takes to render incoming images from a PC is claimed to be just 4.3ms. With 120Hz 1080p games, lag is claimed to be just 8ms, and even with 60Hz 4K sources the lag only increases to 16.9ms. Setting UST projectors up can be a chore, but Optoma seems to have this covered on the GT4000UHD too, courtesy of four-corner correction designed to maintain an image that's uniform in shape and focus, as well as 360-degree and portrait mode options reckoned to deliver true plug and play simplicity. The GT4000UHD should be available to order now from Amazon U.S., Amazon Canada and B&H Photo Video, with an estimated street price of $4,499. — Related reading Anker Launches New Nebula 4K Laser Projector With World First Liquid Cooling System BenQ Unveils Two New 4K HDR Home Cinema Projectors—Including One With 4K/120Hz Gaming Support Optoma Launches New 'Photon' Projector Series With Portable Triple Laser UST Model
