At The Track: Decision on Leilani Lodge trainer delayed

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. The protracted decision on which trainer takes over Leilani Lodge has been delayed until later this week. An Australian Turf Club subcommittee tabled a report on the famous Randwick stables last Friday that has been given to the board of directors to consider. It is expected a decision will be made by the end of the week but even that is not guaranteed given several directors are overseas. Ciaron Maher, the nation's premier trainer, and the high profile Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott training partnership are the applicants to take over the famous racing stables at Royal Randwick. There is also speculation about what will happen to the Crown Lodge stables at Warwick Farm and the Osborne Park training and stabling facility near Agnes Banks when James Cummings completes his tenure at Godolphin at the end of next month. Godolphin Australia supremo Andy Makiv confirmed there has been interest from 'various parties' looking to acquire the training facilities, and also their Flemington stables. 'There has been plenty of interest in those (three) properties,' Makiv said. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ The Waterhouse-Bott stable struck early on Stradbroke Day when promising stayer Campaldino won the Group 2 Brisbane Cup (3200m) at Eagle Farm. Campaldino scored his fourth consecutive win with a strong staying performance under Tim Clark to beat Etna Rosso. The striking chestnut gelding's form surge began in Orange Cup followed by a Benchmark 78 at Kensington, Group 3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup and then the Brisbane Cup, giving Waterhouse her fourth win in the Eagle Farm 'two miler'. Campaldino is now likely to be given his chance to complete the rare Brisbane Cup-Melbourne Cup double - a feat achieved only twice by Viewed (2008) and Macdougal (1959). ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Champion jockey James McDonald will have another chance to equal 'Miracle' Mal Johnston's longstanding Group 1 riding record after his second placing on Hidden Achievement in the JJ Atkins at Eagle Farm. Hidden Achievement missed the start but McDonald then rode a brilliant race with the colt emerging as a challenger halfway down the straight only for local hero Cool Archie to respond under pressure and draw clear near the line. McDonald, who had been unwell during the week and was forced to forgo his Stradbroke Handicap ride on Rothfire when he couldn't make 55.5kg, has ridden 15 Australian Group 1 wins for the season, one behind Johnston's record he set back in 1979-80 when the legendary Kingston Town was in his prime. Although McDonald has left for England where he will ride at Royal Ascot this week, he will be back for the Tattersalls Tiara on June 28. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ Asfoora can join Choisir as the only Australian sprinters to win twice at England's prestigious Royal Ascot carnival when she tries to defend her title in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes (1000m) on Tuesday. Despite the dominance of the Aussie speedsters at Royal Ascot in the last two decades, Choisir is the only two-time winner with his famous King's Stand Stakes-Golden Jubilee double in 2003. The King's Stand, now known as the King Charles III Stakes, has since been won by Takeover Target (2006), Miss Andretti (2007), Scenic Blast (2009), Nature Strip (2022) and Asfoora last year. Black Caviar (2012) is the only other Australian-trained sprinter to win the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (formerly Golden Jubilee) although Starspangledbanner (2010) and Merchant Navy (2018) won the race after being transferred to Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien. Asfoora's trainer Henry Dwyer told English media the mare had 'travelled over really well' and had settled back into familiar surroundings at Newmarket. Dwyer said he has decided to put the blinkers on Asfoora for Tuesday's big race on the opening day of Royal Ascot. 'I think the blinkers may have been the missing link and I've always wanted to put blinkers on her as she is quite a 'looky' horse,' Dwyer said. 'The blinkers might add that little one per cent we need.' Originally published as Ciaron Maher and the Gai Waterhouse - Adrian Bott partnership await verdict on famous Randwick stables

His dad rode over 1000 winners, now Will's out to blaze own trail

Apprentice Will Stanley hopes 'a shot in the dark' from his manager will lead to a stakes win at his first attempt when he partners Steel Blaze for Kembla Grange trainer Brett Lazzarini in the Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on Saturday. With just two city winners to his name, Stanley will join five other apprentices with rides in the listed $200,000 race. 'I've never ridden for the trainer before,' Stanley said 'I think my manager [Ryan Roberts] just kicked up for it, just as a shot in the dark for it. 'It's good. It's a bit below the weight I usually ride, but he was willing to put me on without a claim, so that was a bit of a bonus for me.' Steel Blaze, second to Campaldino in the Orange Cup this preparation, was a $31 shot with Sportsbet from gate six. 'He should get a lovely run and I'd say he'll end up three pairs back the fence, ideally,' Stanley said. 'He's raced over that sort of journey before and he's coped with it pretty well, so I think he'll handle it.' A son of trainer and former jockey Peter Stanley, the 21-year-old moved from his hometown of Orange to Newcastle to join the Kris Lees stable late last year and further his riding career. His sister Ashleigh, brother Justin, nephew Dylan and cousin Jett are also jockeys.

Brisbane Cup on cards for Kiwi import Campaldino after third straight win at Eagle Farm

Don't miss out on the headlines from Horse Racing. Followed categories will be added to My News. Former Kiwi Campaldino must have felt like he was back in his former homeland as he relished the heavy Eagle Farm conditions to take out the Group 3 Queen Elizabeth II Cup (2400m). There were wild betting fluctuations in the staying event, raced on a Heavy 8 surface, as one-time favourite Immediacy took a bath in betting and blew from $4.20 to $7. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Immediacy was given a good run in transit by James McDonald but the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained gelding never fired a shot and was beaten out of sight. Punters zeroed in on former import Dillian, trained by locals Will and Peter Hulbert, and he was backed from $10 to $5.50 favourite in the belief he was a swimmer. Dillian was also well beaten but, meanwhile, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Campaldino ($7.50) was enjoying the conditions under jockey Tim Clark. This was a big step up from wins at a midweek event and the Orange Cup. But the four-year-old who started his racing career on the other side of the ditch has now put three consecutive wins on the board. 'He relished the conditions and he's been a progressive horse and he is starting to put is all together now,' Bott said. 'There's more upside there and he is racing with a bit of confidence. 'We came up here with a bit of confidence the way he'd been working since his last run and the way he's been all preparation. 'When the rain came it filled us with confidence.' Bott said it was onwards and upwards towards the Group 2 Brisbane Cup over 3200m on Stradbroke Handicap day at Eagle Farm in a fortnight. Clark said Campaldino felt like a new horse. 'He made a really big leap there coming from midweeks,' Clark said. 'He's just been a different horse since Gai and Adrian took the blinkers off him. 'He was wanting to overdo it. With the blinkers off he relaxes really well. 'He conserves his energy and it was a really dominant performance there. 'The way he's relaxing in his races is the key and I'm sure over two miles he'll do the same.' The Waterhouse and Bott and Clark team was back in business in the following race with New Endeavour taking out the Group 3 Lord Mayor's Cup (1800m). It was the former import's first win Down Under but he did boast a runner-up finish in last year's Group 1 Doomben Cup. Shayne O'Cass previews racing at Goulburn on Monday

DANNY Williams is hoping a potentially special horse can deliver stable apprentice Dale Cole a special moment on the day he has his first race ride at Goulburn on Monday. Cole's debut has been a long time coming as his boss and admirer Williams explained. 'Dale was an apprentice electrician and came to me wanting to be an apprentice jockey,'' Shelby Sixtysix's trainer said. 'I think he had six months to go on his sparky's course and I said 'look, you want to continue that and get your certificate.' 'So he persevered with that and started riding for us. He'd never ridden a horse before. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. 'Then about 12 months ago this August, Dale was involved in a really severe accident. He got his foot caught in the iron and got dragged a couple of hundred metres. 'He fractured his pelvis, fractured his femur, tore a big hole in the inside of his leg where the leg pulled virtually apart, and broke five ribs and punctured a lung. 'It's a been a long process to get back. 'He started riding again late last year and he's finally back after a year and is having his first ride on Chemtrail on Monday.'' Chemtrail has done nothing but impress in his short time in public. The son of Cosmic Force was an emphatic trial winner at home at Goulburn, 20 days ahead of his equally dominant debut win in a Nowra Maiden last October. 'He is a nice horse,' Williams said. 'He's been a very slow maturing horse. We paid $20,000 for him at the yearling sales. 'I initially bought him as a pin-hooker (to re-sell) but he developed a bit of an issue behind and he started walking like he had stringhalt. 'We preserved quite a bit with the horse, in and out, in and out, and eventually it disappeared and then he won his first trial. 'Then when he went to Nowra we thought he would win very comfortably and to our surprise, he got a little bit lost and didn't show the speed he was showing us at home, but still won. 'He pulled up with a little muscle soreness after it so we turned him out and gave him a good spell in the paddock. 'We were hopeful of getting a ruin in the Highway last Saturday but unfortunately he didn't get a run.'' â– â– â– â– â– GOULBURN BEST BETS WITH SHAYNE O'CASS BEST BET Race 7 No. 3: Chemtrail Set aside after an impressive debut win. Clearly talented and resumes at home. NEXT BEST Race 2 No. 7: Flying Argento Left a good impression at the business end of the Orange Cup last start. VALUE Race 1 No. 9: Super Achiever Impeccably bred 3YO is far above what he delivered on debut. BEST EXOTIC Exacta Race 7 No. 3 to beat No. 6 QUADDIE Race 5: 2,4,6 Race 6: 4,5,6 Race 7: 3 Race 8: 2,3 JOCKEY TO FOLLOW Keagan Latham will have plenty of support to win the TAB Jockeys Challenge. â– â– â– â– â– RACE 1 Super Achiever was a $625,000 Karaka purchase. The son of boom sire Super Seth a 1600m/2000m dual stakes-winner Valpolicella is much more talented than what can be derived on debut. Only going to get better with each step up in ground. Expect more this time. His (John Sargent) stablemate Bearings did some good things last preparation. This is a suitable trip to resume over and the trials were more or less about fitness. Bet: Super Achiever to win, quinella 3,9 RACE 2 Flying Argento ran in the Derby before heading out to his trainer Gary Portelli's home-town for the Orange Cup where he left a lasting impression with some good work to the line behind a subsequent city winner, Campaldino. Form reads well for this. Stay Tuned is a typically sturdy Paul and Martha Cave trained staying type. One of his two wins was here at Goulburn. De Louviere is fit and in-form. Bet: Flying Argento to win, exacta 7 to beat 6 RACE 3 Kahraba is by Dundeel whilst her third dam is Travel Light who won the Queensland Oaks. It stands to reason then that Kahraba's only win so far, in 15 starts, was over 1800m at Hawkesbury. That said, her pattern has probably not helped her strike-rate. Nice race for her - fresh, today. Adventure Seeker has race fitness, the home-ground advantage and is on a hat-trick this time in. November Air is a horse on an upward trajectory. Bet: Kahraba each-way, quinella 2,4 RACE 4 Bonnyville remains winless after 13 starts but he has placed five times, three of them are seconds. The Yass-housed gelding is unplaced in all six starts on Good track so it could be that with the sting out today, he finally gets his reward. Evokes would have to be a rarity in as much as his dam is by Octagonal; wouldn't imagine there's too many of them left. Did some good things at his first preparation. Nice race for him this one. Bet: Bonnyville to win, exacta 1 to beat 2 RACE 5 Airliner's only win, in 18 starts, came back on August 27 on 2022 at Kembla, two starts after he finished 10th there to Think About It in a Maiden! Despite his poor strike-rate in terms of wins, he is one of those horses that is nearly always thereabouts be in the country, provincial or even Highway grade. The Predictor is racing exceedingly well, big run last start at Wagga, but may be wise to keep an eye on the track conditions; wouldn't want it heavy? Bet: Airliner to win RACE 6 Isagura has raced eight times for a win and three well as two fourths and a fifth so apart from being very well placed by her trainer, she is a very reliable filly. Just to seal the deal, this last start winner has barrier 2, Winona Costin at her home track. Zielle's only win in nine start was in fact her only visit to Goulburn. Drawn wide again but she can launch late when circumstances permit. Bet: Isagura to win, exacta 4 to beat 6, Daily Double 1st 4, 2nd Leg 3 RACE 7 Chemtrail trialled like a bomb prior to his debut win at Nowra in October. Hasn't been seen since but Danny Williams has found the perfect race, at home, 1000m, 4kgs off, for the son of Cosmic Force to resume. Drawn 10 of 12 here but jumped from 8 of 10 when he won at Nowra. Orthies beat Quein Step (runs in the last) on debut here then was probably even better again in defeat when fourth in a Class 1 at Hawkesbury. Power Smash beat a handy type here first-up 20-days ago. Bet: Chemtrail to win (best bet), exacta 3 to beat 6 RACE 8 Quein Step was bred, part-owned and trained by Ron Quinton. The daughter of Sidestep and Canterbury winner Skein drew 8 of 10, raced up on the speed, and went down fighting when a short head second to Orthies on debut here over 1000m on March 11. Honey Perfume is a Matthew Smith trained filly with three placings from four starts, one of them was a second to Wave Breaker which reads brilliantly for this. Outstanding trialler at Warwick Farm 11-days ago.
