Should Liquid I.V. be on Canadian concertgoers' must-pack list?

I love small indoor venues with regulated temperatures and assigned seats, but Kesha , Barenaked Ladies , Cyndi Lauper , Our Lady Peace and many other headliners this summer are at the very popular outdoor Budweiser Stage, located in Toronto on the shores of Lake Ontario. Toronto is having a very hot summer, so I appreciate Liquid I.V. 's messaging around proper hydration. The popular electrolyte drink mix ( available on Amazon ) first came to Canada in the summer of 2023 and went after the concertgoer and fitness community across the country. The brand is not slowing down. It continues to partner with Budweiser Stage and other Canadian venues and events to share its messaging around the importance of hydration. Discover the best of B.C.'s recipes, restaurants and wine. By signing up you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc. A welcome email is on its way. If you don't see it, please check your junk folder. The next issue of West Coast Table will soon be in your inbox. Please try again Interested in more newsletters? Browse here. I see two angles for consuming Liquid I.V. First, it's important to replenish electrolytes in hot and/or sweaty environments, and it's easy to do so with convenient packets of powder. Secondly, it's more fun to drink water when it tastes like a delicious treat. However, know what's in the packets before consuming them. Liquid I.V. offers sugar-free and sugar-full variations ( learn more about the sugar options ); however, the former have yet to make it to Canada ( Organika, a Canadian-made electrolytes powder , has a sugar-free option). In terms of use and cost, Liquid I.V. packets are not cheap, but also not small. At over $2 per pack, the cost of the drink mix can add up if used frequently. However, it can also be a more affordable option compared to drinks at a concert venue. Just bring an empty reusable plastic bottle (some venues, including Budweiser Stage , often don't allow metal containers), Liquid I.V. and find a water fountain. Also, it's recommended to mix one pack of Liquid I.V. with two cups of water, but I prefer a more diluted taste and only use half the pack for two cups (the packets are easy to fold to save for later). With a reusable plastic water bottle and a pack of Liquid I.V. in hand, I headed to the Kesha concert. (If you completely want to stay out of the sun, check out VEEPS , a new streaming service in Canada, where you can watch live concerts.) There was a Liquid I.V. pop-up at Budweiser, handing out samples. I've now tried most of the flavours and my favourite is the strawberry . As mentioned, I can appreciate the added benefits of Liquid I.V. compared to straight water, but would save it for super hot days (like the Kesha-concert day) or days when I'm exerting a lot of energy (like going for a long summer run or bike ride). I enjoyed having Liquid I.V. during the Kesha concert, as it was hot, crowded and sweaty, and I needed every excuse to stay hydrated so I could focus on the music. Aside from the convenience of electrolyte packets, I wanted to learn more about Liquid I.V. and what sets it apart from its competitors, so I connected with its brand manager, Courtney Dodds. Q: Why is Liquid I.V. looking to connect with concert-goers this summer? A: Concerts are about more than just the music – it's about the full experience. From getting ready with friends, to spending the days or nights under hot summer skies, to recovery the next day, they can take a lot out of you. The hot and long days and crowds can often lead to less hydration and electrolyte imbalance as the heat and sweat drains your body of electrolytes like potassium. When you aren't hydrated and your electrolytes drop, your body feels it fast. It's what makes Liquid I.V. such a perfect hack for concert season. Whether you're heading to a major festival or a local outdoor venue, Liquid I.V. is designed to enhance your hydration and help to fuel the whole experience. Q: What's Liquid I.V.'s goal in the Canadian market? A: As wellness continues to be prioritized by Canadians, proper hydration is also becoming even more important. Despite this, in a survey Liquid I.V. conducted last year , we found 63 per cent of respondents reported feeling regularly dehydrated. Even more alarming, younger Canadians ranked highest in feeling dehydrated, with Gen Z (77 per cent) and Millennials (74 per cent) identifying they feel dehydrated weekly. Our goal now is to continue helping Canadians stay hydrated wherever their life takes them, including summer nights spent seeing their favourite artists. Q: When do you suggest consuming a packet of Liquid I.V.? A: While individual needs vary, Liquid I.V. is designed to enhance hydration anywhere you want to support your body, whether you're active, spending time outdoors or just going about your daily routine. The key is to make hydration a habit and be proactive because by the time you notice signs of being less hydrated, you're already behind. Adding Liquid I.V. to your water helps replenish electrolytes, making it easier to stay properly hydrated throughout the day. With 63 per cent of Canadians feeling regularly dehydrated, adding Liquid I.V. into your daily routine can be a simple way to keep your hydration on track, no matter what your day holds. Q: How can Liquid I.V. support your summer wellness routine? A: According to the Liquid I.V. survey, most Canadians know how much water they should be drinking, but more than half still fall short of that goal and often feel dehydrated . In the summer, the heat makes us sweat even more, losing essential electrolytes that are crucial in helping our bodies stay hydrated and balanced. There are a few easy tips to help Canadians stay hydrated and support their wellness routines: Q: Is there a recommendation on how many packets of Liquid I.V. should be consumed? A: We recommend one stick per day mixed with 500mL of water for hydration on the go. Q: What differentiates Liquid I.V. from other electrolyte drinks like Gatorade? A: Liquid I.V. has 3x the electrolytes of the leading sports drink in Canada, but it also contains more than just electrolytes. It has five essential vitamins – B3, B5, B6, B12 and Vitamin C – to keep you feeling your best in the summer heat. On top of that, Liquid I.V. comes in travel-friendly, single-serve packets, making it easy to stay hydrated anywhere. It's these qualities that have made Liquid I.V. Canada's top powdered hydration brand. Q: What's your favourite Liquid I.V. flavour? A: I truly love every flavour, but I'm really a fan of the new Tropical Punch that we just launched. It has tangy notes of tangerine nectar, pineapple and cherry. I'm also loving Firecracker , it's a blend of lemon-lime, cherry and raspberry that delivers a refreshing burst just like summer celebrations. We brought Firecracker back this year because Canadians loved it so much last summer! Q: What's one thing on Liquid I.V.'s horizon that you're looking forward to? A: It's impossible to name one thing! There's so much to be excited about with Liquid I.V. as we'll be keeping Canadians hydrated coast-to-coast this summer! We'll be at Budweiser Stage all season, hitting Badlands in Calgary during Stampede week, and soaking up the vibes at Fvded in the Park in B.C. But what I'm most excited about is getting Liquid I.V. into more hands across the country and showing people just how easy – and game-changing – it is to stay hydrated. We're also listening closely to our community and can't wait to bring even more exciting new flavours to the country. Promotions and products are subject to availability and retailer terms. Magnesium, probiotics, and collagen are some of the buzziest supplements on the market right now, but they are just three of the many vitamins and herbal remedies that Canadians are leaning on to support their health. According to one survey, as many as 38% of men and 53% of women take supplements regularly. There are a variety of reasons why someone might want to start supplementing, says Adrienne Ngai, a registered dietitian in Vancouver. 'Vegetarians may need a B12 supplement, as well as calcium and vitamin D, for example,' she says, because they may not be getting enough from their daily diet. 'And those over 50 should take a vitamin D supplement of 400 IU per day.' So, if you're not already blending a powder into your morning smoothie or popping a pill before bed, you're probably wondering what some of the most popular vitamins are for, and when it might make sense for you to supplement. Story continues below advertisement Creatine Our bodies make this natural compound in the liver, kidneys and pancreas, and it's also found in red meat, chicken and fish. Some new research shows that creatine is beneficial for cognitive function, but it's best known as muscle-building support. Creatine assists with the creation of ATP, which supplies energy to our muscles, reduces cell damage, and assists with post-workout recovery. Organika Creatine Powder If you're ready to get ripped, the folks at Organika recommend starting with a loading phase, where you take the supplement three to four times a day for a week, then switch to a maintenance phase where you take it once per day stirred into a water bottle or beverage. $29.97 on Amazon (was $31.99) Story continues below advertisement Collagen 'Collagen is a structural protein found in skin, hair, nails, and bones,' says Ngai. 'Our bodies do make it naturally, but aging, sun damage, smoking, and drinking alcohol decrease collagen production.' There are some studies that show an improvement in skin moisture, elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles with consistent supplementation, but more extensive research is needed, she says. Story continues below advertisement Folic Acid Most people get enough with a healthy diet, because folic acid is found in a variety of foods including beans, peas, lentils, spinach, broccoli and orange juice. But, its recommended that all women who are planning to get pregnant or could become pregnant ensure they are getting 400 to 1,000 mcg daily, to prevent neural tube defects and pregnancy complications. Folic acid is also essential for heart health and cognitive function. Webber Naturals Folic Acid 1,000 mcg Each tablet contains a full 1,000 mcg dose and is vegan, soy-free and non-GMO. TIP: If you take multiple supplements, consider using a vitamin pack to keep you organized and ensure you don't miss a dose. $7.47 on Amazon Story continues below advertisement Iron Women who are pregnant or menstruating are often at risk of iron deficiency. 'If you don't get enough iron, you can feel tired and irritable,' says Ngai. 'If you think you have an iron deficiency, speak with your doctor to get it checked.' AOR Ortho Iron This iron supplement also contains vitamin C, B6, copper, and B12, which are supporting nutrients that enhance iron absorption and further assist with red blood cell formation. It's also easy to digest, gluten-free and non-GMO. TIP: If you are also taking calcium, take it at a different time of day, as these two nutrients can interfere with each other's absorption. $52.86 on Amazon $66.49 at Story continues below advertisement Magnesium Sometimes called the 'antistress' mineral, lately magnesium has been touted as a sleep-supporting nutrient, but it plays a role in a number of functions, from muscle recovery to bone building. It's found in a slew of foods, including nuts, whole grains and dark green veggies. Nature's Sunshine Magnesium Complex Product description If you think your body needs a top-up, this complex contains two types of the best-absorbed types of magnesium. But to avoid unpleasant side effects like gastro issues, be sure to take no more than 350 mcg daily, says Ngai. $28.20 at Nature's Sunshine Story continues below advertisement You may also like: Ninja Professional Blender – $119.99 Ello Pop & Fill 22oz Stainless Steel Water Bottle – $26.97 Greens Superfood Powder – $38.98 Melatonin This sleep aid has been steadily rising in popularity, as more people struggle to get enough zzz's. Your body does produce it naturally, but if you're trying to overcome jet lag, or turn back your internal clock to help you fall asleep earlier, a supplement can help. Genestra Brands Melatonin Spray Melatonin is safe to take in low doses for short-term use but be sure to talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or thinking about giving it to your kids. This spray contains 3 mg of melatonin in every spritz, to help reset your body's sleep-wake cycle. $22.25 on Amazon Story continues below advertisement Omega-3s These are healthy, unsaturated fats that we can get from foods like salmon, trout, eggs, chia and walnuts. Omega-3 fats help to support and maintain immune function, heart health and cognitive abilities. Orange Naturals Omega-3 Fish Oil Each caplet contains 1000 mg of a wild fish oil blend including sardine, anchovy and mackerel. The easy-to-swallow soft gels can be taken daily with food. Tip: 'If you find supplements to be fishy tasting, store them in the freezer and take them frozen,' says Ngai. $25.19 at Story continues below advertisement Probiotics These are live bacteria and yeasts that can have health benefits for your body, by assisting with digestion and gastrointestinal issues. Probiotics are naturally found in fermented foods like yogurt but can also be taken as a supplement in the form of a pill or powder. Cymbiotica Probiotic This supplement contains 19 potent strains of gut-friendly, rebalancing bacteria that work to support a healthy microbiome. For best results, take three capsules daily with a meal. $116 at Cymbiotica Story continues below advertisement Vitamin C This water-soluble vitamin is essential for collagen formation, wound healing, immune function and more. Fortunately, vitamin C is found in a number of food sources, including strawberries, red peppers, leafy vegetables and citrus fruits. For example, an orange contains about 70 mg of C, and women need 75 mg daily. Sports Research Vitamin C Product description It's important to note that taking too much vitamin C can result in diarrhea, nausea, and other unpleasant side effects, says Ngai. $30.95 on Amazon Story continues below advertisement Vitamin D It's called the 'sunshine vitamin,' but sun exposure isn't sufficient to get all the D your body needs. The best way to get enough is through diet—including foods such as fortified dairy products and nut milks, eggs, fatty fish and mushrooms—and taking a daily supplement. Vitamin D helps to support muscle function and keep bones strong. Jamieson Vitamin D These easy-to-swallow little tabs are a simple way to get your daily dose. TIP: To maximize vitamin D absorption, take your supplement with a meal containing healthy fats, like avocado, fish, eggs or nuts. $6.67 on Amazon Story continues below advertisement Note: Before you start taking a new supplement, it's smart to consult with your doctor or pharmacist to ensure the product is right for you and that it doesn't conflict with any of your prescription medications. Looking to level up your skin, hair and nail game this summer? Shoppers are raving about this one supplement — and no, it's not some random TikTok trend. Enter Organika's Enhanced Collagen Protein. This odourless and flavourless powder has earned a loyal following from skincare junkies. It's easy to mix in your smoothies, coffee, matcha and more. Plus it's packed with the good stuff to support glowing skin, healthy joints and stronger hair and nails without any sketchy additives. Oh, and did we mention it's sourced from grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle? Your body (and your morning latte) will thank you. As an added bonus, the collagen powder is made in Canada and available via Amazon's Canada Showcase. Keep scrolling to see why the beauty powder is worth the hype. While the unflavoured option is popular, this powder is also available in Lemon and Chocolate flavours. If you've heard the buzz about collagen but are still on the fence, here's what you need to know. Collagen powder has become a go-to supplement and the science backs it up. Studies have shown that hydrolyzed collagen (the kind used in most powders and Organika's supplements) can significantly improve skin elasticity (which decreases with age), hydration and texture, while helping to reduce wrinkles. It's also been shown to relieve joint pain and improve mobility in those with osteoarthritis, making it a popular choice for active individuals and those experiencing age-related joint issues. Each 500g tub contains pure collagen peptides sourced from grass-fed, pasture-raised cattle with no hormones, antibiotics, or GMOs. It's also gluten-free, keto-friendly and paleo-approved, making it a versatile choice for a range of dietary needs. Because it's hydrolyzed, it's broken down into smaller peptides for better absorption, meaning your body can actually put it to popular anti-wrinkle cream is made in Canada — and it's only $15 on Amazon I've been using this anti-aging face cream for over a year. It's just like La Mer's $525 cream, but it's $476 cheaper Paulina Porizkova, 59, is 'completely and utterly fangirling' over this viral anti-aging treatment The powder is also undetectable once added into hot or cold drinks, smoothies, soups, or baked goods and there's no weird aftertaste or clumps. 👜 12,000+ reviews ⭐ 4.5/5 stars 🏅 "One of the best collagen products I've tried!" Organika's Enhanced Collagen Protein has garnered a loyal following among Canadians for its quality and effectiveness. One happy shopper raved: "I started using this product to address joint discomfort, and it's been a game-changer!" Another said: "I already notice quite an improvement in my hair, skin, nails and even my joints after 6 weeks." Not sure what shoppers say about blending it with drinks? Rest assured. One shopper revealed: "The powder dissolves easily without altering the taste or texture of my drink." Did you know Organika is BC-based & family owned and operated for over 30 years? While most are thrilled with their purchase, some have noted about the size of the packaging and amount of product: "Disappointed that the container was way bigger than the contents." If you've been in search of a low-maintenance way to boost and supercharge your wellness, Organika's Enhanced Collagen Powder is the way to go. Between the stellar reviews and benefits, this powder is about to become your newest secret weapon.
