The Black Bear Inn review: ‘The Welsh rarebit was historic'
B efore we begin our annual catch-up with all the comings and goings on far west Wales's world-beating restaurant scene, I must first apologise for coming to it a bit late. I know you wait with bated breath to hear how Grain is getting along, and the Shed at Porthgain, and whether they've sorted the catering at Oriel y Parc, and what on earth is happening at the Old Sailor's on Pwllgwaelod beach, but I got rather distracted this year, boyo, do you see? By the Black Bear Inn in Bettws Newydd in Monmouthshire.
You know Bettws Newydd? Ooh, it's love-lee. A tiny little spot in the hills, ever so cute, quiet, with views like you wouldn't believe. On a sunny day you'll swear you can see heaven. Now, the internet will tell you it's near Usk, but it's between Gwehelog and Llanvair Kilgeddin, really. On a latitude with Nant-y-derry. Which I'm putting in because you can never read too many beautiful Welsh place names. You really can't. I'm looking at the map here and literally singing them aloud in my best Fireman Sam accent.
